I don't know if I agree that taxing the companies that are price gouging will benefit the average person. We don't necessarily receive any benefits from taxation as it is. It should be capped - period.

I mean really what it comes down to is greed flat out and that's all there is to it. I get needed to turn profits, but at the same time, how much money does one individual really need by literally starving others out of existence. There's a lot to be said on both sides but still.

The reason consumers takes the price increase on the chin is we have zero choice except for growing our own food where we can.

I disagree with Josh when he says you can do capitalism and not harm people. Any system where you let individual people horde loads of wealth and power and they aren't accountable to the people they harm while using it is an unjust system. Even if you make strides to limit their power (taxes, regulation), if there's no limit to the power they can hold, they can (and will) eventually gain it back. You can't fix the system if they can buy it.

It's too bad that they didn't talk about the JBS lawsuit. Meatpacking giant JBS has agreed to a $52.5 million settlement in a beef price-fixing lawsuit that some say supports their concerns about how the lack of competition in the industry affects prices.

I am curious how much of this is driven by "eating at home" vs restaurants. I suspect restaurants contribute less to profits at companies like Tyson due to volume pricing where individual consumers pay full price.

The discussions about capitalism are not very sincere, curious, open-minded, scientific. Instead it is filled with prejudice and opinionated bullshit. It's not black and white. Capitalism is not a law of nature. It's something we invented. It's not being practiced 100% anywhere because that would be as stupid as 100% anarchy or redistribution or whatever. It's something we invented and it doesn't automatically solve every problem optimally, which is not controversial but painfully obvious. Capitalism is a useful mechanism, and so is whatever regulation we choose to impose on it. Capitalism should not be in the driver's seat, people should. We should democratically decide how to use the usefulness of capitalism and the usefulness of regulations. If global international capitalism and regulations were democratically decided, it would probably emphasize stock holder pockets less and emphasize redistribution more, climate more, biodiversity more etc. And no, just because people vote with their shallow wallets in the current system and buy the cheapest thing available that might not be best for these other issues, doesn't mean that that is then what they would choose if they actually had the choice. It's a long time ago that we reached the productivity world wide to be able to provide food, clean water, shelter, healthcare and education to everyone. Sure, some development would be slower and we would create billionaires slower and not concentrate wealth as much, but civilization would not collapse. In fact, most of the world would be better off. Capitalistic companies do not exist in a vacuum, the are part of society and gains a lot from society, access to an educated workforce etc. They also like bailouts when things get rough, funnily enough. We need a more objective scientific view of the economy and it's mechanism and options. Then we can have different opinions and values, sure, but we can discuss and choose our mix of options openly instead of "capitalism good, everything else bad".

When did either of them ever say anything remotely close to "capitalism good, everything else bad" ?? Clearly you hear what you want to hear. No one is interested in your tribal BS btw. My team good, your team bad! *eye roll* I recommend growing up but my hopes are not high that it will happen.
