Turkish Cypriot leader Mustafa Akinci’s election in 2015 reinvigorated hopes for a solution to the Cyprus problem.
Campaigning on a promise to restart stalled negotiations with the Greek Cypriot government, Akinci seemed primed to breathe new life into attempts to resolve the decades-long dispute on the Mediterranean island.
Soon after the election, Akinci and Greek Cypriot President Nicos Anastasiades entered into reunification negotiations with the support of the United Nations (UN) at Crans-Montana, Switzerland.
Three years later, the talks are almost a distant memory, having fallen apart in July 2017, and tensions are running high over the issue of gas exploration off Cyprus. Akinci says that the responsibility for the lack of progress lies with the Greek Cypriot government.
"They are always ready for talks, but they are not ready for taking decisions," he says.
"Of course, if we want to solve the problem, we need to talk but, at some point, we need to take decisions."
"I need to see some indication that the mentality has changed ... in addition to that we need to have negotiations at some point, but not business as usual, not to go around the issues all the time without any results, it has to be result-orientated."
Effectively divided along ethnic lines since 1974, when the Turkish military intervened in response to an Athens-inspired coup, the Republic of Cyprus is recognised by the international community and became a member of the European Union (EU) in 2004.
The majority of the island is controlled by a Greek Cypriot government under the recently-reelected Anastasiades, who discussed reunification and the current gas dispute with Al Jazeera earlier this month.
The northern part of the island, however, is ruled by the government of the self-declared Northern Cyprus under Akinci, which is recognised by Turkey and guarded by its armed forces.
On the recent controversy surrounding gas exploration around Cyprus, Akinci is positive about the shared benefits drilling could bring, but cautions that, with so many actors involved in the gas exploration - US energy giant ExxonMobil has been given permission by Greek Cypriots to begin explorations and Akinci confirmed to having agreements with Turkish firms - there is strong potential for an accidental confrontation.
"I cannot say that everything is fine and everything will be under control, sometimes certain things happen unwillingly and accidentally ... I see a big opportunity there, if treated properly, handled properly, without any fear of accidents [ourselves] and the others we can get mutual benefit out of it ... If not handled properly, you may expect accidents at any time."
While still insisting on his commitment to finding a mutually-satisfactory resolution to the Cyprus problem, the Turkish Cypriot leader, who, at 70 is part of the last generation that remembers living in an undivided Cyprus, acknowledges that it's not an easy task.
"It's getting more and more difficult and more and more complex. There is a nice [phrase] 'hope dies last', but you have to work hard and you have to work to keep it alive because otherwise, just letting time pass, you kill it".

The Turkish Cypriots officially represnt 18% of the population, a minority percentage, and he wants to own half of Cyprus and equal veto powers. The Republic of Cyprus does not just represent the Greek Cypriots as he says, it represents both Greek Cypriots and genuine Turkish Cypriots, not the Turkish colonists. The problem is of invasion and occupation by Turkey, resulting in the division of Cyprus

@@kenanelsever3856 Try saying Invasion rather than ''intervention''. The original agreement excluded both Enosis and Partition. Turkey has violated that agreement by continuing to occupy the northern area of the Cyprus Republic since 1974 causing the division of Cyprus. Turkey's action was not protecting the status quo on the island. What Turkey did was: Invasion, Occupation, Ethnic Cleansing (of the Greek Cypriots), Colonisation. Also, President Makarios survived the coup, yet Turkey still invaded and continues to occupy the northern area of the Republic of Cyprus, in violation of UN Resolutions
@panostheodoulou1166
@panostheodoulou1166 2 жыл бұрын
@@kenanelsever3856 The Turkish Cypriots had 30% of the power in the Cypriot parliament, considering they represented 18% of the population. No where else in any country have minority populations been given such a right. They also had considerable veto powers and constantly vetoed anything and everything. Makarios in his amendments offered the Turkish Cypriots in effect a self determination status under the Republic of Cyprus but they turned it down. The Greek backed dictatorship was not part of the Cyprus government. If reunification were to happen now, and Turkey withdraws from Cyprus, the whole island would be part of the EU with equal rights, opportunities and security for all Cypriot citizens, as enjoyed by other EU countries. These so called ''guarantor'' powers, Britain, Greece, Turkey, would no longer be applicable to Cyprus, an EU nation, and would no longer be valid. To say that there would be Enosis is a bit naive, and a thing of the past at the height of the cold war. Cyprus now is an EU nation, even if it were not, it would still remain an Independent Republic. Reunification would also mean benefits of energy exploration for the whole island, that the Cyprus government is undertaking. As it stands now, the northern occupied area is in international isolation, and will remain so until Turkey withdraws from Cyprus, allowing reunification. In fact, most Turkish Cypriots long for reunification and the benefits that would bring, as witnessed recently in demonstrations by indiginous Turkish Cypriots against Erdogan's visit to the occupied north.

There is a simple 2 state solution. Follow the Australia and New Zealand model of citizenship. Recognize South Cyprus and North Cyprus as 2 independent states. Turkish Cypriots can grant citizenship rights to Greek Cypriots and vice versa. A Turkish Cypriot can elect to become a Greek Cypriot and a Greek Cypriot can elect to become a Turkish Cypriot or they can maintain their own citizenship but enjoy the same citizenship rights of the state. This way the people in both states can travel and live freely in either state protected by the law as though they are citizens. The would open up the island to all Cypriots. Free trade would be optimal between the 2 states. Everyone would win. A win win solution. Learn the Australia and New Zealand citizenship model, it works.

Akinci may claim the Greek Cypriots are all hat no cattle when it comes to reunification talks but he has stated that any solution to the Cypriot issue must include Turkey's rights to maintain troops in the north and to retain the guarantees stipulated in the 1960 agreement. Turkey and Akinci want Ankara to maintain the right to invade Cyprus whenever it wants. Akinci knows that no Greek Cypriot leader would ever accept such demands (and neither would the leader of any other country, for that matter, agree to the occupation of any part of their nation by foreign troops) and thus knows that the Greek side will never agree to reunification on those terms. Let him drop those demands first and he will see how willing the Greek Cypriots are to reunification. Anastasiadis has already agreed to a two-state federation which his predecessors did not want. But Akinci will never drop those demands so who is being intransigent here?

When the 2 sides can't even agree what the problem actually is, then it's going to be a big ask to find a solution. Add that they also disagree on the current state of affairs (with both denying the legitimacy of the other) then you have to ask if you're not just wasting your time. Not convinced? Read the comments below. You are the people who are apparently arguing to be reunited. But you're mostly more interested in insulting and defeating each other. You're only arguing about how you're right and they are wrong. Precious few are suggesting how we solve it in the real world. And I say real world because "throw them all out", "send them all back" or "the island belongs to us" etc is really just the stuff of fantasy. On both sides. It's just people asking for the impossible - and getting very angry about not getting it. There are 2 communities on the island who both feel aggrieved and nothing anyone says will convince them that they don't have the right to feel that way. Is it a good idea to push them together in a way similar to 1960? History would tell us, No. Because if 1 side 'wins' then the other must 'lose' and so to start on that basis you are simply preparing future problems. The only alternative is to start from where we are today. 2 groups of people in 1 island that they both call home Call them communities, peoples, states, whatever you like, but just agree that we are all here. I'm not saying you need to be happy about the situation, but you need to at least agree on facts. Only then can you work out where you want to get to (close or loose federation, majority/minority, bi-communal/bi-zonal, 2 states etc etc?). But again, look at would is achievable. A fully Greek island? No. Union with Greece? No. Acceptance of the Turkish Cypriot state with today's boundries or troop numbers? No. But somewhere within that there is a possible solution if the people are actually p`repared to share their island. If the French and Germans can make peace, then why not Turks and Greeks? If you're now answering "we can't because the other side are evil/bad/corrupt etc" then you're a part of why the island will remain divided. We have our differences but we're also very similar. Especially in Cyprus. Unfortunately stubborness and staunch nationailsm are just a few of our shared traits. If you recognise each other's right to be in Cyprus as equals and then bring down the barriers of working together toward a common goal the people will eventually merge naturally. Because THEY want to. Not because they are forced to by the mother countries, by the super powers of their diaspora, but because the people living in Cyprus today choose to. Money will be there to be made and that always trumps everything else. It's essentially how Europe united after 2 World Wars. Time will fix most of the rest, but a few idiots will always remain. On the other hand, if there is absolutely no chance to find common-ground, that's fine. But then an agreement needs to be made on how they remain separate. At least then, even if aggrieved, people can plan for the future with a degree of certainty - and we can all talk or argue about something else.

Is there a valid point to your rhetoric . Those flags ( European Union Etc) do not represent the Turkish Cypriot people their struggle or their nation, what part of that isn't clear to you. There is no such people as cypriot. There are Greeks cypriots and Turkish Cypriots. The streets and boulevards of Nicosia south side are dressed with the flag of Greece in isolation and can be seen on administrative buildings. The Streets play host to statues of the Bishop and EOKA members calling them heroes when their are branded international terrorist. . The 1960 Republic does not exists as that was destroyed in the campaign of ethnic cleansing and the Greek popular movement Enosis. At the time of the Ethnic divide no one argued for the Cyprus Republic but instead the european allies recognised the Greeks as the legitimate government of the Island. That further evidences the acceptance off the collapse of the 1960 Cyprus Republic. In addition that action clearly defines the foreign policy of the international community who instead of acting democratically and justly in bringing to account the perpetrators of those heinous acts simply sided with their historic ally and kinsman in recognising the Greeks as the legitimate government of Cyprus. I should add they may have recognise the Greeks but we are not under any obligation to accept that circumstance and we don't. We are Turkish we are Turkish Cypriot We are Muslim and we are proud. Who's being unreasonable, Why you are of course. Addressing your first point. If accepted that anyone with more than half a brain is capable of understanding the current affairs, that raises the question surrounding your inabulity. Your choice of voicing in referring to the TRNC as Cypriot Land is unacceptable and offensive which is contrary to the facts. That is another trait of the Greek mentality in which it develops belief in delusion and continues to assert the principal of racially motivated ethnic cleansing. Turkey is present on the TRNC because they were invited to be there by the Turkish Cypriots. That is a matter of fact and degree and I see nothing unlawful in that. Meanwhile, Greeks continue to hold land which was misappropriated by the British to the Greeks in their policy of promoting and establishing a Greek dominance on the Island. How else would the peasant class of found itself owning ottoman titles. At the time of the Ethnic Divide and at the time your brethren and British allies recognize the Greek establishment as the recognized government , it is a fact that the government they recognize was not the 1960 Republic as that had been destroyed by the Greeks and no longer had the rule of law , government or democracy and was a failed state, that the land lying to the north was not in Greek possession at the time that announcement was made and so had no relevance . The TRNC is not a member of the EU so they have no authority to pass comment or to dictate terms. In addressing your comments regarding negotiations it was the Greeks who declared war on the Turks and so destroyed the 1960 republic, it was the Greeks who failed to agree the Anan plan and it was the Greeks who bungled Crans Montana. It is correct that the EU favors the Greeks but the way things are going the EU is losing importance on the world platform and in time it may fail altogether. Your Leaders are not the representative of the Turkish Cypriots and the Greek Cypriots do not form their community. There is noting in common other than the heritage and culture the Greeks continue to adduct in claiming it as their own, Turkish Coffee at the top of the list. Your views on Turkey and its relationship with the EU is tainted. Your comments are evidently hate driven. According to the World Bank, by 2030 China will be the number 1 economy and USA 2 with India 3 and Japan 4 Brazil in the middle and Turkey No. 10. I hope this helps to rid yourself of the confusion you evidently find yourself besieged by and in brining a little clarity to your tainted thoughts.

The only reliable, sustainable and real 'solution' is recognition of Turkish Republic Of Northern Cyprus. Greek part has no intention to accept equality and international recognition of Turkish Cypriots. Back in 2004 Greek with vast majority %70 denied Annan plan. Even though the UN plan was benefiting a large land sacrify from Turkish Cypriots. As a prize; EU acceptted 'Cyprus Republic' to the union. Also back in 2007 in Crans Montana, hesistated to proceed and literally ran away by putting childish excuses. Turkish troops, guarentees, residents, properties etc. Like Mr. Mustafa Akinci mentioned, there is nothing like the Cyprus island is Greek. What is wrong with Veto rights? Of course if we are speaking about a new structure, a new government of course one partner will have something to say. Speaking of rights and equality, we are not naive. Greek Cypriot 'dream' is to annex Turks as minority. This is totally wrong. For more than 40 years Turkish Cypriots are enjoying independence, so no one should expect a stepback. Love or dislike; more than TRNC does exist and will exist also tomorrow. So if there is a need for 'solution', 1st step is to recognize TRNC. Speaking about unification, it is a useful dream.

I remind the Turks that under the Geneva Convention, changing the demographics through war and occupation is an act against humanity. After 1974 Turkey has been changing the demographics of the island. The Greek Cypriots have lived on the island when the Turks were living in central Asia as tribal people. At around 1100AD through Mongolian organization started to spread death and destruction to the Middle East, Northern Africa and Southeastern Europe. Turks are Turkic people from central Asia and not Arabs, despite them trying to pass themselves as Arabs. When they occupied the island in 1571 they did exactly the same as what they have been doing since 1974. Before the invasion the Turks made up 18% of the total population on the island; today it is over 30%... and most have no roots to Cyprus as the emigrated and replaced by immigrating Turks from all over Turkey.

The hundred year mark means Turkey will take control of things which were previously out of her control, this means the annexing of Northern Cyprus to become a part of The republic of Turkey. This has been the plan all along. Look at the massive new airport being built in Ercan. It will have a capacity of 10 million passengers a year and far surpasses Larnaka in technology and size. North Cyprus is ready for direct flights. North cyprus is closing its doors to South Cyprus and opening its doors to the world. There is Cypriot identity San has; a Cypriot sovereign state, flag, etc. Agree with you that more needs to be done this way to better establish one Cypriot identity made of multicultural diversity, like Greek, Turkish, Armenian, English, Russian, Polish, Lebanese, Syrian, French, German, etc. I have come across all these nationalities residing in Cyprus and call Cyprus home. How about you...? Just like in the UK, France, US, Australia, South Africa, and even Turkey itself! etc. They all have people that came from different places.

Forgive me but i disagree. It is clear from the facts we are not a nation and never have been. When your ancesters attacked us, they first identified we were turkish then they killed us. I don't call that a national struggle but instead a national pastime for the Greeks. The star and crecsent is my flag and represents who I am . Why does that bother you. In any solution, my understanding is the establishment RoC would have been abolished and a new structure would have replaced it. It takes more than occupying the same time zone to lay claim to being a nation and your points simply do little to convince me otherwise.

Sorry, you are right, I can forgive you, because apparently you have wrong history and geography lessons. It is indeed a nation, it is called the "Republic of Cyprus". Feel free to look it up. The other northern part is not recognized as a country, since it is illegally occupied. Again, feel free to look it up. Beyond this, this island had the "star and crescent" only when Ottomans invaded during the Ottoman empire. Before that there was no "star and crescent" correct... The rest of your sentence makes no sense. sorry. Perhaps you also do not have good English language lessons. and you also wrote "crescent" like so "crecsent" which is wrong ;)

Why is Akinci unreasonable? Since when ones wanting to protect their existence and life security became a crime? The Turkish army is there because of failed negotiations between 1963 and1974, and continual of atrocities committed by the Greek fanatics towards the Turkish population. The whole population of Turkish villages were massacred. Maybe your leaders are hiding these facts from you, but I doubt it. We want to live in peace and security. We were forced by the Greeks to migrate from the south to the North. In doing so we left our houses and properties And yes, some of us occupied greek properties to maintain our existence and continue living under Turkish Armie's protection. Now I ask my Greek friends; if you were in our place what would you have done? Rather than continuing centuries-old hatred if you accepted our rights as equals, we would not be in the situation that we are in today. I'd say we should maintain the status quo until there is a complete change of mentality by the Cypriot Greeks.
