I'm 80 years old, and going on a 50 mile bike ride in the mountains today. Exercise is one of the main keys to longevity.

My grandmother is closing 90 and still climbs our local trees to cut apples when they're ready! She's been exercising everyday for the past 40-50 years.

Yes, I have friends in Ikaria and spent some month there. This is a magic lovely and healing place. Poor in finances, rich in nature, friendliness and health. I can recommend it for people to be creative and fill up their soul batteries. Before tourism eats it up. :)

+Birgit Fischer Is it expensive to live there? .Είναι ακριβό να ζήσει εκεί; Μόλις αποσύρθηκε και είμαι ψάχνουν για ένα μέρος για να ζει.

seeamerica1 Hello seeamerica, to your question: being German I found the food in the small shops more expensive (it is an island and people have their own vegetables). The fuel also, all luxury is more expensive. But apart from that: the people, the nature, housing, eating out: just beautiful. The purity is not to whey in money. If you look for a piece of land to live and grow your own organic food: my German friend sells his amazing farm ground with view over the Agais. Best regards :) Birgit Fischer
@seeamerica18 жыл бұрын
Thank you very much. I am getting older + wish to find a place to live out my years. I already grow my organic food & believe in a clean lifestyle. I don't have a lot of $$ saved as my focus was as a mother which I was not paid for, then husband left. Now kids are grown with families of their own, no time for me...sad this is the American way. Ikaria sounds lovely, I will continue to learn more.
@BirgitFischerMusic8 жыл бұрын
seeamerica1 Dear, thank you for your reply :) If you think of moving there for good: yes, it will become cheap. Especially in these crisis times there the ground is sold for nearly nothing! My friend might get perhaps 50.000 Euros for a huge huge mountain ground with life basics like toiltes, water, kitchen, WC, solar electricity, animals. etc …But on a holiday you should really try it, perhaps simply by airbnb somewhere! They have healing sources there used since ancient times!! All the best to you from Germany :)

Heelo und danke, sehr geehrte if I may impose on you once again How did you make your travel arrangements ? Can you suggest any website for me to obtain more information ? Does Ikaria have internet to possibly communicate with someone who lives there; & should I assume they speak Greek?

These people also exhibit a lot of JOY in their everyday lives. They seem to truly cherish their relationships with the people in their lives. I think that makes all the difference and combine that with a healthy, natural ORGANIC food supply, and you have the secret to a long life.

It sounds like it boils down to not having a care in the world. NO STRESS! It's amazing how much better life is when you remove every ounce of stress. :) Soooo, it's Saturday, so push in your chair and go do something today. If you have kids, go play with them. Enjoy life. Do what you love. Do anything, just do it with a smile on your face. :)

Except what all are said in here, I would like to add that the healthy doses of resveratrol in their home made wine, their pure herbs like faskomilo chamomile and their pure thick pasta of true honey, along with laughter, socialising, no stress, oxygen, healthy food, good and much sleep and lot of walking every day could contribute to their longevity… Love

My family are from a small village in Cyprus, Lythrodontas... They say that my dads grandad lived to the age of 127! All his kids lived well into their 90's. My grandmother is today in her 90's and going strong! My dad says the reason the guy lived for so long was that he started his family in middle age and wanted to stick around.

If I could move to Ikaria right now, I would pack up my wife and 2 dogs and 2 cats in a heartbeat! I wonder if it's possible to become an expat in Ikaria? I should look into it! The people are amazing and it's such a beautiful place! This is inspiring! I would like to add that my wife and I bought a duplex so that my 88 and 86 yr. old parents could move next to us. My wife loves them almost as much as I do, and her mother is only 3 blocks away. Still, it is not as beautiful here and sadly, we don't enjoy life the way the Ikarian's do. There is a huge lesson to be learned here!

I've studied Ikaria's history and there are some factors which play a role in the islanders' longevity, such as for a few hundred years they had no harbors - they destroyed them because of repeated pirate raids. This forced them to live on what they could raise or fish out of the Med, with some meager supplies coming in on small boats they would beach on the sand. It simplified their already very healthy diet. Also, there was a "Darwinian effect" in the 1940's when Ikaria lost 10% of her population to starvation during WWII and the Greek Civil War- only the strongest survived.

The residents of ikaria are healthier and live longer than rest of us because they eat lots of fish, vegetables, nuts, olive oil and whole grains on daily basis..they also walk/exercise, socialize, drink wine, herbs and eat cheese..

Things I learned to achieve longevity: 1. Eat plant based foods 2. Minimize stress 3. Engage in worthwhile activities like farming, goat raising 4. Engage in physical activities like walking 5. Associate with others and engage in social activities Seniors are not placed in retirement homes. Go to Ikaria or Okinawa and live longer than most people.

Ikaria is the place where the time stood still. I mean the people there have no sense of time at all. You can order your food and have it deliverd at your table after two hours just because the cook went to his place to have a lunch bite. Believe me,it is nice to stay there for a couple of days but very difficult to cope with their way of living for much longer. Apparently, longliving has it's price :)

The same environmental factors are present in many other communities around the Mediterranean, yet they don't get the same longevity. Or if somebody moves there, they might get benefits like less depression, demention and being more fit, yet I doubt they would live longer. I bet that they got some extra genetic factor that helps with longevity specifically.
