Ikaria, an isolated island in the Greek archipelago, is on average 10 years older than the rest of Europe. Niklas meets wine producers and beekeepers, and takes a closer look at what the cause may be.
Niklas travels the world exploring Blue Zones, areas where people often turn over 100 years old. What is it that makes a long life in these places not only possible but also likely?
In this food and lifestyle documentary series, internationally renowned chef Niklas Ekstedt explores the secret of living past the age of 100. He’s travelling to six of the world’s ‘blue zones’ - regions such as Sardinia, Costa Rica, and Okinawa in Japan, where unusually high numbers of people reach an advanced age - in a quest to find the recipe for a long and healthy life. Along the way, he befriends locals and gets to know them, joining in with their daily routines and discussing their approaches to life, food, and ageing. He also reveals different ways of living. For example, in Ikaria, Greece, he discovers a town which keeps the stress levels down by not keeping track of time. And, as you would expect from a leading chef, he also can’t resist sampling some of the local specialties in every place he visits.

I have long been a fan of the meditteranean diet (Spanish, Italian, Greek) and to see the island of Ikaria it's so wonderfully slow placed, calm and peaceful - it's not just food but the whole atmosphere and lifestyle; what is life but full of care, we have no time to stand and stare but in actuality this is exactly what we should be doing, not being so dtiven by time and nowadays the internet.

Hallo!!!! I am Greek and I also live in Greece although I haven't visited Ikaria. In terms of herbs and virgin olive oil it is true that we eat a lot, as well as vegetables. We use olive oil everyday for cooking and basically on our salad. Olive oil is a remedy for many physical disorders .In every city there is a marketplace at least once a week where someone can buy fresh vegetables, fruits and herbs which most of them are cultivated by farmers. Of course, we can find them in supermarkets but in marketplace they are more fresh and less expensive. Generally, the Greek cuisine contains lots of herbs such as dill, parsley,oregano, mint, basil and green salad like radish , kale, lettuce, broccoli, cauliflower, beets, tomatoes and cucumbers, green and yellow peppers, paprika and fresh green onions and onions.

The food is to die for! The wine is so good we never had a hangover! I myself have not worn a watch for 26 years, It s life changing! Once upon a time we also use to live like this in South Africa but things has changed! Stay heathy and drink wine!🥰🍷( Ps they also drink lots of water)

This is an excellent example of a high context culture. They value the moments of life and how they communicate within relationships is not to be rushed whether with people, growing, preparing or eating food which is seldom done alone. They are the original slow food movement, common all around many Mediterranean cultures.

As a Greek this is a myth about vegetarian life in Greece as it is very meat based, especially in ikaria where the meat eaten is primarily goat, lamb , pork and fish. Vegetables and fruits are seasonal and herbs are added to cooking, but the Greek diet is not vegetarian. In fact a lot of dairy is consumed as well from region to region. This video doesn’t show the entire story unfortunately.

@Blurb777
@Blurb777 2 жыл бұрын
Mama Mia was filmed on an island closer to the mainland. Ikarians were asked if a segment of Game of Thrones could be filmed on their island and they rejected it. Commercialism. In fact, Ikaria is one of the last traditional islands in Greece. Not at all like neighboring, partying Mykonos or gorgeous Santorini. It's a humble island, not rolling in money, with broken walks and roads, some empty houses, but there is warmth with the people who will adopt you in a heartbeat, and the beaches are all free. You can camp on them as long as you wish with no one telling you to move on. We get lots of Germans there. Fig trees line the walkways in the capital of Agios Kyrikos which anyone can eat, and the capital has zig zagging roads built to confuse the pirates who used to raid the island, kidnap people and sell them as slaves in Africa. This is why fish are not as widely eaten as one may suspect - sailors were, up until 1911, often the target of kidnappings. But they are eating fish now more than before. Nor do they eat bread like the rest of Europe - but they do eat. There is a delightful bakery in Agios run by a Greek American from Ohio - he works till noon, then closes shop till the next day because all his bread has been sold out - all for one euro and, if you feel like splurging, one and a half euros. Amazing bread! There is one bus, "the Green Bus," that will take you from Agios to Therma - a village about 3 miles away where the hot springs are. You can jump in them at no charge. One Englishman was waiting for the bus and was told where the bus stop was and to wait for it. Hours later, after no bus arrived, the Englishman asked, "When WILL the bus driver come?" The answer, "When he wakes up." It's not always like that - but you have to roll with the flow and then it's all good.

I never heard that Buddhists consider reincarnation a bad thing…. If you were in good health, had lots of friends and family and remained physically and socially active, wouldn’t you want to live longer? I’ve had chronic pain since my 20s, which got considerably worse just before I turned 50, so I’m expecting it to get progressively worse. And I’m pretty isolated socially, especially because I’ve moved around a lot (different countries). But if I was pain free, could keep busy doing things I enjoy and had a good social life, I don’t mind living as long as I’m lucid and not in a nursing home waiting to die…

Only doctors say wine is not healthy. Have you ever seen what doctors eat+drink? Fast food and coffee! I had a doctor friend. He drove a lot working for California (prisons). He dumped his fast food containers in his Volvo till it was so full only the drivers seat was not full of trash. Then he would sell the car. Crazy? He was a psychologist! Go figure

I’m just wondering how long the wild herbs will stay if everyone forages every day…. It’s great if everyone has their veggie garden, but what about in the winter…. There may be a shortage of fresh veggies…. I know they can preserve surplus veggies from the summer, but I would miss occasional fresh salads and other veggies…

Well there has always been limited salad stuff in winter in much of the world. In some places none at all. People used to ferment more but you can live perfect well without fresh veg all year round.

The winters are mild. Deferent wild greens at every season. And very plentiful!!!!! I'm Greek, I recognize about 100 wild eatable greens. Now I live in California. Same wild greens here!!!!!

They do not eat meat everyday though. Sure it is on the menu , a rare treat , that is why it is revered.

The industrial and capitalistic way of living and eating is unhealthy for us. They don't have supermarkets, crowded spaces...

Many Ancient Greeks lived up to 90 or even 100 years old (at a time when other nations died around their 30's). They fought in wars between 20 and 60 years old! Their secret: MODERATION in all things. In Greek: ΜΕΤΡΟΝ ΑΡΙΣΤΟΝ.

In Australia we have more centenarians and they lived on Hot Dogs Meat pies Kangaroos and Holden cars.Oh an they also had a good sense of humour that helped to get through all that.

I'd heard that Australia has lots of centenarians although no blue zones. But I do Wonder after them forcing you to vaccinate and if you didn't they would wrestle you to the ground - even the women-- I'm not so sure you're going to have that long life. I was super healthy n my covid attack was less than 24 hrs long.The Now the vax forced on us has me sick for 1 year n going. Pretty sure that me and many others will have a shortened life span due to being forced to take the vaccine.

Well they probably cannot go around shooting their neighbours and running them over and if anyone is a ratbag and gives trouble they are probably straightened out by relatives.Most of the problem people have been dealt with.A peaceful existence is one factor in a happy life.

The Swedish man towards the end of the video made a comment that summed it all up when he said that they get together; they socialize; and they share. They have these parties and in Sweden if you had such a party there would be three people--ge says-- cuz people do not like to mingle and they do not like to ask for help. AS regards the help, I would refer you to Herbert Spencer who is actually the man who created the term survival of the fittest which has destroyed the Western world. Darwin actually said the term "natural selection" which meant a being that adapts itself to a nItch in "an immediate local environment" where it will excel which is completely different than a being that tries to destroy everything in its path and take over the world because it feels it is superior and the prize goes to the fittest m. Google that name and you would know everything you need to know about how we no longer have long, healthy, joyful lives: cooperation versus competition is what you will find in every single blue zone. And you can eat meat if you want as in some of them they do eat a lot of meat, I've been told, so u don't need to argue or feel bad or guilty or defensive about that. ACTUALLY the SPIRIT you bring to the area you live in & the people you live with that decides how long you live. Plus of course eating of the land; from the land; and giving back to the land 🌅
