Lol I am so late but YES we could literally buddy read everything, this whole video just had me smiling. The Oresteia has been my favourite Greek play that I've read yet - I loved it so much. In September I'm taking a course about Athenian Drama and we're reading like ten different plays and I'm so psyched. All the luck with getting through these, I can't wait to see how your dissertation develops!

Awesome to know you're into greek mythology and legends, ever since I've seen Troy fall of a city, I've been reading about what really happened at Troy around 1250 BC, about the actual historical facts...it would have been an honor to fight at Hector's side...cheers ;-)

ooh I've added so many books to my TBR! I absolutely love Greek mythology!!! another recommendation for something that is really easy to read and covers a really wide scope of myths (though doesn't spend very long on each of them) is a set of four books beginning with "Oh My Gods". They are far less "intellectual" than something like Homer, but I think they would be really useful for some base knowledge on a wide variety of characters/myths -- plus they're really short!

Great video! I highly, highly recommend listening to the Great Courses class on Classical Mythology. It covers EVERYTHING essential about the Greek myths! The course talks about all of the old literature you mentioned and more, while also summarizing who the Gods and heroes are and their stories! Great Courses are usually very expensive but you can buy it through audible for an audible credit ($15 with an audible account.) I am a huge fan of the ancient plays. Oedipus Rex and Antigone by Sophocles are essential tragedies. A really good comedy is Lysistrata by Aristopanies! If you are doing anything relating Greek mythology to popular culture, maybe the Percy Jackson book series by Rick Riordan or the Olympus Bound series by Jordana Max Brodsky, as well as the movie Clash of the Titans (the original). I really hope I helped! I hope the dissertation prep goes well!

Hello. I am new here and your Greek mythology book haul caught my eye. I just wanted to make a recommendation for you. If you want to see a version of Medea that will stick to your ribs forever, I recommend finding the Paris opera Ballet’s production of Medea. It’s a staged Ballet and it is unforgettable. You’ve got some great titles there and I hope you don’t have to write your dissertation for several years because it’s gonna take a while to make your way through all of those books. Happy reading!

Ooh what an exciting video this is! Song of Sacrifice sounds fantastic and exactly my cup of tea. Will have to add that to the TBR :) Would Leda of Sparta be the same as Leda and the Swan? So, Helen's mum? That's the only Leda I can think of, especially with Helen being Queen of Sparta and all, but I'm intrigued if there's another one! Ahh, this is the best haul I’ve seen all year. If your university library has “Goddesses, Whores, Wives, and Slaves” by Sarah Pomery, that might be a good place to start for getting context on women in antiquity. It’s comprehensive and scholarly but very accessible to read. Another great starting point for historical context is Edith Hall’s Introducing the Ancient Greeks, which is for the general reader. If you’re lookin for context on Homer, I love Barbara Graziosi’s “Homer”-brief and to the point. Hesiod freaked me out the first time I read his poems, but the commentary by Barry B. Powell that introduces his translation of both poems and Alicia Stallings, who has a very enjoyable translation of Works and Days, were super helpful. Happy reading to you!

If you want to read more about Ancient History, you might want to try and get your hands on Herodotus's and Thucydides's stuff after you have an overall idea of everything that happened. I'm using Thucydides's book about the Peloponnesian War for an essay right now and it's awesome because he was literally there when it happened and it's not every day that you can read something like that. Pretty cool stuff 🤓 I just bought The Penelopiad at a book fair, I've had it on my wishlist for the longest time and I'm SO HAPPY that I finally have it 😍😍 Never heard of Song of Sacrifice but damn... that sounds great! Can't wait to see what you think of all those books - happy reading! 😄

I read Aeschylus for a class and found that watching The Oresteia (it's somewhere on KZbin, in 3 parts, for each story) made it even more interesting for me. It's a fairly low-budget production but you can read along and watch the story and everything that happens. It's quite intense.

The play about Medea is set after Jason and the Golden Fleece where they met in Colchis where she was King Aeetes daughter. Euripides version of Medea is set in Corinth after their escape from Colchis and Iolkos which was Jason's homeland.

I assume you already have the book 'The Silence of the Girls' by Pat Barker? That, I believe, is the story of the Trojan War from the girls perspective. It's one I'm very interested in reading myself x I had to buy some Greek and Roman non-fiction books for my Open Uni course and one book alone was more than £40!!!! Luckily I managed to pick it up second hand on a Facebook Open Uni books for sale page! x Great haul and some new stories and characters I never heard before x Have fun reading!

I haven’t yet read it myself, but Robert Graves’ Greek mythology book is always recommended! I do actually have a video coming soon of my mythology & folklore collection, so it might be worth keeping an eye out for that as most of the books are just called “Greek myths” or something similar so listing the without photos is a bit confusing 😂

For retellings, you should take a look at Stephen Fry's _Mythos,_ _Heroes,_ and _Troy._ You might also want to take a look at John Barth's _Chimera._ Not, strictly speaking, retellings, and not exclusively about Greek subjects, but worth a look.

I have strong opinions on nearly everyone one of these books but I look forward to hearing your opinions first! :-D "The Argonautica" actually describes the beginning of Medea's story as it comes down to us in most myths while Euripides' "Medea" covers a story near the middle of her myth. Euripides' actually wrote a number of tragedies about the character of Medea but that is the only one that survives. As it comes to myth-retellings the most popular writer in this genre might be Mary Renault, who wrote her most famous books in the '50s and '60s. I haven't read her yet but I hear mostly good things.

I haven't read Mary Renault yet, but I do own one of her books - The King Must Die (Theseus and the Minotaur). I'm excited to start making my way through her work, eventually.

You should definitely read Women & Powder by Mary Beard. In that book the author talks about portrayal of women in antiquity, and she draws parallels to modern misogynist politics. She also talks about the character of Penelope, because her being told to shut her mouth and turn away while the men in polis talk is actually the first written proof of chauvinism in history; and it's just over 100 pages. The portrayal of Medusa's head is also quite important in the book because of Trumps portrayal of Clinton as Medusa and himself as Perseus. Trust me, it's good stuff, if you enjoy studying how ancient thoughts have been integrated in our society, and how we can change the structure of that society,

Have you seen the KZbin channel see u in history? It’s pretty much dedicated to mythology of all sorts, Greek, Roman, Egyptian, Norse. They basically upload daily with different tales from various mythologies and it’s easy to get hooked and just binge it because they’re like 4 minutes long.

In context to the book synopsis, it does mean what’s mentioned above - “for a life of honest husbandry” would be the equivalent of saying the text notes how you should farm and tend to your own crops/animals for the ideal daily life
