In 1979 I visited Athens to see my grandmother. She took me to the gardens near the temple of Zeus. I remember street vendors selling the pork souvlaki for 10 drachmas or the equivalent of 25 cents US. The city was clean but crowded like most cities. When I see videos now of Athens I'm always struck by the level of graffiti.
@EleniKallimorou Жыл бұрын
@@georgetsokanis3542 untfortunately, politicians had relied heavily on the support of construction bussinessmen during the 50's and 60's to get themselves sponsored and eleccted, and so allowed those to demolish much of the old houses and buildings of the old Athens. We ended up with these horrible appartment blocks, and the only means of the new Athenians to fix these horrible cement buildings is our graffiti. So we are as proud of our street art as much are we are proud of our street food.

The kokoreci that you had is a good showcase of the subtle differences betweek greek and turkish cuisine. In Greece, we put liver and other innards inside while in Turkey they don't. I think you can ask for them on the side there. And while in Turkey kokorec is cut into tiny pieces and put into a sandwich, in Greece it is eaten whole.

Thanks. Kokkoretsi is made of internal organs, not only liver, but also hart, kidneys and lungs, all held together by intestins. It is know all over the Balkan, including Turkey. Though it is made all year round, in Greece it is an important meal with Easter: the sheep or goat needs 6 to 8 hours above the charcoal and will be ready at 14 or 15 hours. So kokkoretsi is the right solution to still the first appitite. Eating it starts at 10 or 11 hours, together with quite a few glasses of wine....

When he buys honey and says thank you the vendor puts his hand on his heart rather instinctively. This is also a very typical gesture in Turkey (which is the country of my origin). Greek Spanokopita (which I love) has more spinach than the Turkish version which is more doughy. The Greek baklava is honeyish and more juicy while the Turkish one is smaller in size with more layers. I love both. Greek Musakka is quite different than Turkish one but quite tasty. There are subtle differences in similar dishes between the Greek and Turkish cuisine but nevertheless you can see a bidirectional influence, meaning both cultures influenced each other which is expected as throughout the history there was so much interaction. I can say the same for many of the Balkan countries. IMO this makes each and every country in the region much more interesting.

That's not sweet carrots... I think its Kidoni (Quince). Its is in a form called "table sweet" that can be made with different varieties of fruits and commonly served with yogurt @ taverns. Btw that's not Greek yogurt! It is just "drained" yogurt that is mistakenly called "Greek yogurt" all the time... Actual Greek Yogurt comes with a thick crust on top, it is actually rich in probiotics and it is way way way too sour for foreign people to taste (especially Americans :P)
