Honestly, I've been to Greece, to Turkey, to Germany and even to Australia where there are huge Greek, Turkish and broader Middle Eastern diaspora communities. You don't find gyros/souvlaki/kebabs (whatever you want to call the broad type of food) as they are in Greece anywhere else. The Greeks are outstanding in this regard.

In Thessaloniki, the Tzatziki in Gyros isn't included as standard. You really need to ask separately in case you want it in. The standard is copious amounts of Gyros, potatoes, a little mustard, ketchup, a slice of tomato and onion. Also, you could ask specifically for Gyros made of chicken instead, unlike the standard which is pork. In short, it's nice when we order 2 for home, one is pork the other is chicken, but few do that. Pork is by far the most consumed meat in our Gyros all over Greece.

I was like you but I came out of the traditions of man- example >easter,saint and mary worship,infant sprinkling baptism,calling pastor father and kissing his hand and not opening our bibles in church to learn chapter by chapter and on and on. In Thessaloniki you must order tzatziki extra as an option it’s not like Athens which is standard. And well done you called our region as Macedonia because this is the right thing to do. Our ancestor doesn’t bother to claim our history and now some Slavs stole our history and name a whole country as Macedonia. Of course now they called North Macedonia but this is not right also Nebraska is their region and this is the right name they should have.

Alex , many of those desserts look like Turkish desserts :-) And what about döner kebab ? It is exactly Turkish döner that we eat in whole Europe ,especially in Germany :-) The difference between gyros and Turkish döner is that Greeks use pork mear while Turks in whole Europe use chicken and lamb ? In Germany, most common fast food is now döner ,it used to be pizza.

Many of these foods are standard in all of the Balkan countries (except doner and gyro, typical of Turkey and Greece). I grew up eating burek almost every morning, baklava every 1st of May, etc. I personally don't like lamb doner, chicken I like as the most of the shops here are doner kebabs, and I don't have chance to eat gyro often. But for me pork gyro is just 3 levels above the western European doner. I would like to try the doner in Turkey and then compare it again with Greek gyro. Anyway Balkan food is among the best in the world. And I always miss it.

When you say Greek dessert “Baklava”is so funny.Because in old Turkish Baklava means bundle of dough. The etymology of words related to baklava and the word yufka, which means thin dough , comes from the Central Asian word "Yubka" and the word "Kat" (mean layers of thin dough) is Turkish. Also Los Angeles Times food expert and a baklava researcher) Charles Perry came to Turkey .He prepared a four-page article about baklava for his newspaper and explained that baklava belongs to the Turks at the World Food Symposium held in Italy.

And probably his research was paid by the Turkish ministry of tourism or some similar agency. 😅 The etymology is sometimes right and can tell us a lot about the origin, but sometimes wrong as well. Because in Serbia for example people call gate: "kapija" which is Turkish word, but it doesn't mean Turks invented the gate. For me if I eat baklava in Greece it is Greek, if I eat it in Turkey it will be Turkish, if I eat it in Lebanon it will Lebanese. It's important that it's a great dessert so we can all enjoy it. I ate it every 1st of May at my home growing up, and didn't really care where it originally came from. But it was both different than Greek or Turkish.

A message to our northern friends: Macedonia is Greek (Hellenic to be exact) and if you want to be Macedonians you better start learning Greek. P.S. I'm a Macedonian with Slavic ancestry. You don't have to be the direct descendants of Aristotle to be Greek. You just need to adopt the Greek culture.
