I've never felt unsafe in Athens, and I walked a lot, daytime and night. Like any large City, if you employ common sense you should be fine, especially in the popular neighbourhoods like Monastiraki, Plaka and Psirri.

The place with crafts vendors and people that don't comply with the rules ( thanks to the deputy mayor Georgiadis) is called thission. The "pedestrian" sidewalk is called apostolou pavlou, and goes halfway around the acropolis until the acropolis museum where it's called dionisious aeropagitous. That was supposed to be athens crafts market. Long story short, before thission trainstation turn right to adrianou street with crafts, second hand and collector items, end of that street left turn where I sell my handmade crafts sometimes ( switching between thission after 15 years) in areos street , and continue after monastiraki square right turn on ermou street , and turnt left, aiolou street more crafters. Athens is totally safe for me as a male individual who's streetwise. Day and night.

I am really tired of defending Athens or Greece to the Greeks. Athens is my chosen city and in my eyes the most exciting city of the ones I have lived in. I lived in Athens as a foreigner from the early eighties to the mid-nineties and it was the best period of my life. I kept coming back because I felt connected with the people and culture in no other city in the world as in Athens. An ever-growing city, with flaws and goods, is the most interesting capital in Europe. The vibrancy and the warmth of its people, especially its young people, the resilience, the cultural production, the poetry, the language, the sea, and the proximity to the islands, make it unique. And, yes, it's safe. Safer than any other city I have lived in, as long as someone takes precautions based on common sense. I returned to live here in my retirement and am as happy as possible. And forever grateful.

I always tell people that Athens is very underrated! I was there with my husband & teenage daughter 2 years ago and we all loved it. On our last night my daughter & I walked around without my husband until 9:30 and felt totally safe. Love the Psirri neighborhood. As in any bigger busy city just use common sense and common precautions and you'll be absolutely fine. The video looked & sounded great!

The area you stayed at is called Keramikos and derives from the greek word ceramic because in ancient Athens most ceramic stores were established in this area. The ancient Athenian cemetery is also there. It is pronounced “Kerr-ah-mee-kos”. Think it is as Ceramic-os just replace the C with a K. Good video! Thank you

I moved to NYC in 1975 when it was basically a war zone, there were streets you didn’t walk at night because that’s where they dumped the bodies. It has since become Disney. Athens in 2017 was piece of cake by comparison. My instincts of what was dangerous never kicked in. The people on the islands who said Athens was dangerous are like the same people in America who say NYC isn’t safe now. Just pay attention and you’ll be fine.

You have an excellent video- and sound quality now. Even better than before. The graffiti some (many) places in Athens can be intimidating, but it does not bite. But as you say, common sense is good to have when being in unfamiliar places. We have always felt safe in Athens and in Greece in general, but we never go around searching for trouble, either. Wherever we are.

Pick pocketing is a risk in Athens, Rome, Paris, Berlin etc. You just have to be aware and prepared especially in crowds.

I've been to Athens many times and never felt unsafe. It's a large city and just like any other large city there are areas that you shouldn't walk around alone at night. I do tend not to stay in Tourist areas, I usually get an Air BnB away from the city centre. I find that it gives you a better experience, I use the local cafes & shops and they are usually cheaper than in the 'tourist areas'. I always advise people to try places away from the touristy areas, try the local cafes & restaurants, they are normally really good!

video and audio quality look great! Athens is a very safe city. Like all major world cities, there are some areas you want to avoid at night! Athens with all the graffiti and street art is like your loud uncle who has a beard and tattoos...a little intimidating but mostly harmless! Anna, you make a great point between Rome and Athens. My personal view is that Athens is more intimate; whether you are in the touristy areas or the outlying suburbs! Great to see you back in my home city!!!

Great info on Athens. I actually noticed the audio from Anna in the square had some echo or reverb before you mentioned you had a new setup. Trevor's voice was also more clear when you took the mic from under your shirt... if we're doing a comparison. DJI makes incredible cameras so I'm sure you'll enjoy the new gear. The nighttime shots were incredibly clear as well!

Athens is a great place, we were there last summer, it was packed but at no time did we feel unsafe. The quality of the video and sound was great, my only comment is for Anna to speak a bit slower, it’s difficult to concentrate on what she is saying when the words blend together. We love her anyway 😊

We really love Athens and felt totally safe, in 2019. Your going to have to up your game if you want to catch up to Gabriel Travelers Greece island count! I think he's in the 40's or so. BTW, can you do, or have you already done, a video on cell phone strategies for Canadians? The issue of 2FA by the bank is a big problem and Google Fi isn't available to Canada. I was thinking of going with Fonus eSim, because you can port your Canadian number, but the reviews are terrible. A yearly Airalo plan is cheap and seems just OK, but it only comes with a US number and hardly any data. What do you use? Keep traveling, and keep your stick on the ice!

I had read the same things about Athens a few years ago when I flew over on my way to Turkiye. I was terrified coming out of the airport and getting a bus ticket to our hotel, clutching onto my suitcases. I then spent a lot of time wandering around the city, both during the day and at night and I never felt like I was in any danger. So I too am surprised about all the warnings. Same happened when I travelled to Mexico city and was told that someone would grab my son who was 6 at the time and sell his organs. I ended up feeling also very safe in Mexico city, although I was careful not to wander around the less touristy parts of the city. This spring I will be going to Kalamata which I heard is a great place to retire. Maybe you could make a video about that place?! Other than that, picture and voice are both clear sharp on this video.

I was pickpocketed for around $1000 in the metro in athens during covid. It was the smoothest thing ever. Was deff done by a group of people who got in between me and my family members on the metro ride. Took my wallet out of the pocket on the inside of my coat with out me feeling it. Took out the money and they were even nice enough to put my wallet back in the inside of my coat pocket. 😂 I had no clue what happend until I was off the train and realized what took place. Greece is still one of my favorite places to go and have never had another issue other than this.

I absolutely love Athens. My husband is Greek so we go twice a year to visit his family in Thessaloniki. I insist, wherever we visit each trip, that we spend at least a couple days in Athens on both ends of the trip. I find it extremely safe at all hours, but I do live in Atlanta.

Signs in English are only in the touristic areas of Athens and in the popular islands. Don't expect to find them everywhere. It's true though that almost everyone can communicate in English.

Pickpockets are all over the world too … so please just enjoy and embrace And go to a taverna and eat all the wonderful starters that Athens has to offer and some local wine❤

I went to Athens for the first time last April. Stayed 4 nights. My hotel was near Omonia and my favourite dinner was in Exarcheia. I went as a solo female traveller. I felt safe. Yes. I was careful especially in the subway. Yes, there’s plenty of graffiti. Seeing homeless was no different than walking around Toronto. None of these things stopped me from enjoying the sights and the food.

Not because I think it’s unsafe but because it’s not where I want to spend my time. Not the biggest fan of cities…although I do love Istanbul, Türkiye. So it’s always off to the islands for us as soon as we land….not to Mykonos, not to Santorini but to the many other lesser known islands. Peace and for the most part, quiet. @ I’ve visited Athens three times and while glad I went no plans to return. But I always like to keep my options open and that’s why I enjoy the videos. Yes it’s all about preference…not about safety. Just prefer the countryside as a general statement….Mainland Greece, Peleponese, and all the islands I have visited in varying degrees. Greeks say this because up until rececntly, athens was an EXTREMELY safe and homogenous city/society. And although athens isnt as safe as it was 30 years ago, it is still remarkably safe compared to most big European cities. For Greeks, it seems dangerous in comparison to what it once was, however, that doesnt mean they have any idea what they're talking about as a lot of the people saying this, haven't traveled enough to actually see what dangerous actually means....

A bit of history of safety in Athens.. I was stationed in Athens in the late 80's in the U.S. Air Force. It was a great place to live. I actually lived in a suburb called And Glyfada. Our old base was on one end of the old Athens International Airport. We never felt unsafe. We did however watch our backs. In fact a few friends of mine were injured in a bombing at a popular expat bar in Glyfada. I and others here checked our cars every day for any wires sticking out or other indications of potential tampering or explosive devices. There was a history of occasional attacks on foreigners over the years, including military members and embassy members. My wife and I visited Athens again around 2016 and we felt totally safe walking around the city and suburbs. I would still feel safer there than many places here in the States.

Trevor and Anna, your new camera/microphone setup is a definite improvement. Night time shots are crystal clear. I can now hear Anna when you leave her steps behind you or across from you when you're holding the camera. It's a shame that there are so many graffiti tagers in Athens (and the free world in general). There are many lovely murals, but sometimes you just want to feature your home's architecture without having to adorn it with a picture. But if you don't, you'll be tagged.

Really they say Athens isn’t safe? I’ve never heard that before,I think a lot of what you hear is 5he opinions of mixed feeling based on experiences they’ve had. I have been to Athens twice for a 3 or 4 nights each time but years ago. It grows on you. The first visit I was disappointed after the hype we built up in anticipation. The second time I fell in love with it. There is an underbelly you need to look out for especially at night. We stayed in the Plaka area one night and watched the prostitutes working the streets from our balcony. It was educational.

Don't lose the song ever, I never tire of it. I hear it in my head when I am in the kitchen and not watching. On the new camera, nighttime vision worked, I don't love the blurred foreheads, your eyes are super clear, but not sure why your foreheads are blurred. Audio was fine in all scenarios. I love Athens! It is the same for any city, tourists and locals alike should be mindful of pickpocketing. And like many other cities in Europe, it is a mix of very old buildings which are crumbling and new buildings in great condition. This is just common. But if people haven’t traveled, they may think this is representative of an unsafe neighborhood. in my experience in many European cities, that is not the case. Also graffiti does not indicate an unsafe neighborhood. In large American cities, sometimes graffiti equates gang activity. Generally in Europe, it’s a form of expression.

Glyfada alimos palio faliro nea smirni vouliagmeni and more south Holargos halandri marousi kifisia and more north Basically leave the center! Even pireas is nice Marina zeas, mikrolimano, castella..

You guys are amicable, smart, and honest about things in Athens. Hence, I do not like all of that graffiti everywhere and all of the areas look skanky instead of clean and pretty and attractive. I think if I were to go one day it would be to the islands and a nice resort, safe, pretty, clean, orderly.

Great video. I think athens is an underrated city. You could argue that it's both under and over it all depends on perspective. Athens has great neighborhoods. The overall city is a bit of a mess in terms of layout. Some people just get fixated on that.

Ι have lived for 10 years in cities around Europe, especially in the UK. I was born and raised in a suburb of Athens and for me, Athens is one of the safest cities I have lived in. I love her and that's why I have returned here. :) Whoever says that they haven't probably lived abroad. :P

Hi there, lovely video. As an old Athenian (over 50) I can tell you that until early 90's we used to sleep at night summer time with the doors and windows open this how safe it was then after the fall of communism everywhere it was the first waves of desperate immigrants and not all of them had the patience of a honest life. I don't want to sound racist. Pick pocketing isn't something that Greeks do is against our culture. Philoxenia = means friends with strangers or foreigners. So in Athens if you avoid some areas I wouldn't call neighborhoods more like a few blocks where North Africans hanging out, the rest of Athens is pretty safe. I would like to advise to go a little journey with the tram to coastal Athens or what they call lately Athens riviera. Just to see one more side of Athens

They say that because they want you to stay on the islands 😄 And for many people on the islands, Athens is like a different world to them. During my travels all over the Greek islands (55 islands so far) I have met locals that even have never been to Athens. The furthest they had been away from their island was to the nearest bigger island where there was a hospital or if that is the administrative capital of their region.

Greeks have never been to a REAL unsafe city, therefore they wouldn't know what unsafe is... Ask how many Greeks have been to the projects in Detroit, Chicago, Memphis, Cleveland, Atlanta, Compton etc. There are some bad areas in Athens, I lived in Athens for many years and even in those bad areas if you mind your own business no one says anything to you.

As soon as we landed at the airport in Athens, we were followed. It lasted exactly 1 hour. When we arrived at Athens’ Syntagma Square, seven people surrounded us. Acting as if they didn’t know each other, these seven people directed us to a different door inside the metro car. They blocked us. One of them stood in front of me and said, “You can’t pass here; exit through another door.” Then another man who stepped in front of me used his bag as a shield and quickly reached into my pocket with his hand. At the same time, another man also reached into my pocket. They tried to steal from me there. They attempted to take my wallets from my pockets. And they were all well-dressed. At first, they look at the tags on your luggage to see if you’re Greek. If they realize you’re a foreigner, they attempt to steal from you. Greece, especially Athens, is full of thieves. It’s not just limited to this incident. From Syntagma Square to the main busy streets, everywhere is full of thieves and pickpockets. The moment they see you’re a foreigner, they try to steal something from you by starting a fake fight, blocking your way, or even pulling a knife. You must be extremely careful about these things.

Greece most dangerous area is Omonia and Menidi in Athens, thats it. Go to other cities in the world....... I feel more dange in germany than in a city in greece for example. Every big city has crime, but in Athens is just one area. I think sometimes they are overreacting.
