Seeing that the fireman and driver were looking back along the train I suspect the cord had been pulled. Not short of steam as the valve lifted as soon as she came to a stop.

Wasn't the communication cord pulled, bringing the train to a stop???

I would be looking at the position of the reverser too much cut off .. OK at speed on a level track .but when you get to an incline you have to allow for more steam in the cylinders . Clearly the fire and boiler were in good fettle its blowing off its safety valves !! The issue is to how the steam is being used

Well what caused it? Bad coal? Low pressure? Water leak? Threw or popped something? Over firing? It just went from moving fairly well to almost a sudden stop (didn’t seem to appreciably slow down but then we don’t see the lead up) so it didn’t seem like the gradient.
