Dagan shows us how to sound like Green Day, specifically how to get the Billie Joe Armstrong Guitar Sound and how to sound like Mike Dirnt using gear readily available today.
If you're a fan of Green Day, you'll know that the Green Day sound is instantly recognisable thanks to Billie Joe Armstrong's signature rig and the Mike Dirnt bass tone that really stands out on all the records.
We show you what guitars and pedals Billie Joe Armstrong uses, what amps he uses to get his signature sound and what style of bass guitars and amps Mike Dirnt uses.
00:00 - Intro
01:57 - Marshall Origin 50
03:33 - Ibanez TS9 Tubescreamer
06:27 - Boss TR-2 - The Boulevard Of Broken Dreams Sound

Green Day was one of the first modern rock bands I got into and they also inspired me to start a band with my friends, and we always included at least one Green Day cover in our sets. I've always liked Billie's guitar tone and it definitely helped give Green Day the sound they've come to be known for

Our band played several GD songs. At the time I was the drummer, but I always wanted to do more GD-to the point where the guys complained about people thinking we were a GD cover band (I would’ve been okay with that lol, especially if I got to play guitar).

I’ve always loved this video over every other Green Day “sounds like” video. Every other video that tries copying this tone always either does JUST the Dookie sound or if they do the newer sound it’s always too trebly and WAY off! Billie’s sound doesn’t have a lot of high tones. It’s actually deeper than you realize at first listen, with the exception of a few songs! Even the Andertons sounds like videos get it way off and they’re usually good at capturing sounds. Dagan actually gets it pretty close!! Billie Joe has a killer tone, and a very underrated one!! It’s hard to get right but this definitely gets super close!! And it’s just a great guide for a good P-90 tone overall if anything else!!

13:31 i think the best way to get the slanted humbucker is by getting a standard SSS stratocaster pickguard and widening up the hole for the bridge pickup to fit a humbucker while keeping the screw holes at the same place. Blue was also originally standard SSS

I learned to play guitar by just trying to figure out every Green Day song by playing through American Idiot, and every album after. I love how easy their parts are to figure out, and how easy they are to memorize (because they have a great feel). Anyways, as a beginner, all I had was a 8” cheapo practice amp, and I used a Metal Zone pedal I to it to get an acceptable tone. GD really does have a fairly metal distortion sound, which is why I like them. Any metal distortion pedal should get a beginner in the ballpark for fun. I really need to run through all those albums on my Katana and see if I remember anything.

I’ve owned a origin 50 head, but switched to a Plexi 20 Watt aka SV20. It sounds much much better, more aggressive and fuller tone. It always want more, and it wants to go up to 11. I also have both the regular Les Paul junior from 2020, and the 2018 Billie Joe Armstrong Signature Les Paul Junior. And that’s the furthest “GreenDay tone” we can achieve at home these days... However, just a little reminder, the GreenDay tone is about attitude and Billie Joe’s playing style. Even though with the same equipments, we still can’t sound like that awesome guy

I saw Green Day in Beloit, Wisconsin around '91 or '92 at a place called Charlette's Web. It was before their MTV debut. There were maybe 100 - 150 people there. I'd never heard of them but a lot of others had by word-of-mouth. Kids showed up with green paint on their faces and I thought, "WTF"? I'd seen a lot of bands by that time but they just blew my head off! Me being a guitar player I got right up front because Billie's sound was so raw and gritty, much like Eddie's brown sound, I needed to know what he was using. He was playing "Blue" and his amp was a Marshall 800. No pedals. Between songs I asked him how he got the gain from the amp. He said it had been re-wired and the speakers and tubes were replaced. After they finished and were breaking down I asked Billie about his guitar. He didn't call it "Blue" but did say it wasn't a Fender and that he had been trying out different humbuckers. I don't believe it was the rail type at that time. I think he said it was a Duncan. Edit: If you listen to the guitar in "Brain Stew"... that was his live sound back then before they were famous!

Modified 100W Superlead (aka Plexi) actually. The mod cascades the two channel so not unliked a single channel JCM800, except both stages are set up like a "Lead" channel and no voltage divider going into the cathode follower (but adds a 200k grid stopper). You could apply the same mods easily to a JCM800, it results in a lot more gain, no more need for an overdrive pedal.
