Billie Joe Armstrong wrote this about his father, who died of oesophageal cancer on September 1st, 1982. At his father’s funeral, Billie cried, ran home and locked himself in his room. When his mother got home and knocked on the door to Billie’s room, Billie simply said, “Wake me up when September ends.”

I sang this song without crying for once. Tomorrow marks the 5 anniversary of my father's passing. He also died in September. Grief never fully goes away as pain likes to hide itself in unique ways, but I am still hopeful. And for all of you going through it, we will be okay. Rather it be a parent passing, a breakup, or some other unexpected goodbye, recovery is on its way.

When he was younger, long before he turned to drugs, this was one of my cousin, Daniel's favorite songs. As a result of a staph infection, he had to have a valve transplant. Well, the valve went septic, causing a brain abscess, eventually leading to a fatal stroke in his sleep about 2 weeks ago. He would have been 25 last week. Even worse, he died a state over, and we're just now getting his body shipped down here. Anyway, rest in peace, D! This little ditty's for you.

Summer has come and passed The innocent can never last Wake me up when September ends Like my fathers come to pass Seven years has gone so fast Wake me up when September ends Here comes the rain again Falling from the stars Drenched in my pain again Becoming who we are As my memory rests But never forgets what I lost Wake me up when September ends Summer has come and passed The innocent can never last Wake me up when September ends Ring out the bells again Like we did when spring began Wake me up when September ends Here comes the rain again Falling from the stars Drenched in my pain again Becoming who we are As my memory rests But never forgets what I lost Wake me up when September ends Summer has come and passed The innocent can never last Wake me up when September ends Like my father's come to pass Twenty years has gone so fast Wake me up when September ends Wake me up when September ends Wake me up when September ends

My dad died of a widowmaker heart attack on June 3rd 2023. a widowmaker heart attack is a heart attack that you dont feel in a traditional sense, instead, it’s symptoms come off weak, cold-like symptoms. we thought he was just dehydrated. things escalated near 7 pm that night. he couldn’t take it anymore, he had to go to the hospital. on his way out of the house, his heart stopped in the hallway and he fell. i came out of my room confused and i saw him. his eyes were open, and you could hear the death rattle. i went outside and called 911 while my mom did chest compressions. he was pronounced dead 9:01 PM in the emergency room. when coming home, this song came on the radio. this song is about billie losing his dad to cancer. it’s almost like the radio knew. To the fatherless/motherless, you’re never alone. tl;dr this song came on the car radio shortly after my dad passed away.
