"Green Dwarf" Coconuts in Cape Coral.

Here I find a couple of dwarf varieties of green coconuts in town near a friend's house. There are so many different varieties of coconuts, and hybrids thereof, one must be careful to quickly label them Malayan, Maypan, or other.

Hey Christain, Great video. I am no expert. I wanted point out that a few decades ago green Malayan dwarfs and Maypans were certified by a agency in Jamaica. Jamaica was one the first countries that suffered the lethal yellow break out that wiped out the Jamaican Talls. They didn't certify Jamaican Talls due to they are more susceptible to lethal yellow and the Malays and Maypans was an alternative to Jamaican Talls. You are spot on about how coconut varieties are hybridizing and there is no way knowing what you are getting when you are planting a coconut unless you know what the parents were. I have four coconut palm seedlings from a known Maypan. All different colors: green, yellow, red, and bronze. The green is the fastest one and the red is the slowest. Thanks for the videos.

Thanks! It is hard these days to get good Coconut information - the best coconut grower in the US recently passed, but he did write a book called Growing Coconut Palms In South Florida. I don't think it was ever published on an open market, he was giving them away.

I would love to tell you to plant out a field of coconuts down there in ZA, but I think Cape Town has an identical climate to coastal Central California like San Francisco and points south. Unfortunately, there is just not enough heat in the winter, and they might live through one year, but the second will probably croak. I wish I had better news - there are some really cool palms you can grow that tropical areas can't, however! Jubaea and Juania australis come to mind very fast!

I'm in cape coral...my dwarf just started to flower ...but the first 3 flower pods opened up and we're full of bees but eventually all the flowers fell off..is that normal?

I am from Malaysia and planted several varieties of coconut tree, hybrid and non hybrid including malaysian dwarf. Through my observation yellow or golden variety will produce more fruits follow by red and green. But it could be different in usa.

I’m in Cape Coral and found a few sprouted coconuts floating in the canal by my house and planted them in the yard they are still small but they are growing I have no idea what type they are is there any way to tell?

I’ve noticed the dwarf (Malayan) varieties need more fertilizer than other varieties. Just from what I noticed. Can a dwarf Malayan coconut produce a tall variety or would it always be a mixture between dwarf and tall such as Maypan if it’s cross pollinated. The reason I ask is because I recently purchased a coconut from a big box store but I noticed the petioles are a bronze color rather than the usual green. It is definitely not golden or yellow in color, but bronze. Since I noticed this different color, I decided to buy it. Thanks for this video.

A true dwarf is quite expensive, you would need to find one at a collector's nursery. Six feet of wood and fruiting may run you up to $1000.

When it gets 6 feet tall, you will have a much better idea of what variety you are dealing with.

Tall varieties will tend to have longer fronds and petioles - this seems to be one of the better ways to tell them apart from my experience, but is not always the case.

My wife and I are building a house in the NW Cape. How do Coconut palms do there. I know its get cold from time to time in the Cape. I would love to plant some Coconut palms along with some Royal Palms. Is it better to plant mature palms or smaller? Thanks Alex.

The NW Cape appears to be safe for Coconuts long term, however freak freezes may take out smaller plants. I am actually going to do a video on where Coconuts grow in Florida from my experience around the state. Coconuts grow well along the coast up to Pinellas County, but if you are East of 75, things start to go downhill.
