When i saw them live and there was a box next to the hammond that had a horn speaker that spun around inside the cabinet, on a speaker stack, always wondered what it did, sound wise, i was hypnotized watching sound come out of it though. Lol

@@michaelmaher4328That’s called a Leslie speaker and is responsible for that swirling sound and you could control the speed of the spin with a pedal. I was in a really decent cover band playing club gigs for many years. As a drummer, this was always one of my favorite songs to cover. Mostly for the reaction it would get from patrons in the clubs. No one else that I was aware of was doing this in 2010s. We always did this in our first set. You could be having a lame night with a so-so crowd & as SOON as the keys & bass would open this up ...heads would immediately turn (even before the first cymbal splash) & a moment later the dance floor was filling. So much fun. Great band, great song. "Ride Captain Ride" by Blues Image was another incredibly memorable song like this. People would just freak when we did that, too. I'm sorry, but I'm not sorry ....music was just simply better "back then". It just ...was. Played by humans, no auto-tune, no click-tracks...just raw talent & great vibes!

Surprising - first time I've watched this. I grew up in Denver watching these guys play in different bands for years. I even sang backup with a couple of bandmates later on the recording of "Don't Call Us, We'll call You," ... but with all the times I've heard them this is the best live version of "GEL" I have ever heard. Jerry Corbetta is a solid pro as always, and Bob Webber is on fire on guitar. I watched Webber (a Denver "legend") play guitar since 1964 (Moonrakers) for years, but he's really smokin' on the solo here. Bob Raymond (RIP) is jacked up playing great bass, and my old "roommate" (from his "Beast" days) Larry Ferris (RIP) plays outstanding drums, kicking it live much harder & faster than Bob MacVittie did on the record. I've never seen Sugarloaf play this song better. Sadly, guitarist Bob Webber is the only living member from this video today. I'm really glad I got to see this. Thanks for posting it. Rest in peace Jerry, Bob Raymond, and Larry.

In this live (*yep, bands actually played and sang in those days) version from The Midnight Special TV show, Corbetta and the band are absolutely on fire. Yes, it's been years since I heard a song when I was in my teens and always loved it. To this day, 2025, I still do.

That thumpin’ bass and this sexy song is something else!!! I had the 45 record as a young teen. 💚💚💚 love the organ, too. Fantastic.

What a killer band. I was eleven when this came out and the radio edit did no justice to this song. We got the album and the extended solos were right there. Those unison bends and octaves have stuck with me since I first heard this song. Killer bass, drums, keyboards are really awesome and that guitar. Great vocals. Great arrangement. One of the few songs that will never get old.

The album version was so much better. Fortunately we had an AM radio station that would play the long version at times.

I can’t believe this is the first time I have seen this recording of them playing live. SNS is a priceless timeless archive of the best years of songwriters and bands in the 70’s.

Classic. They don’t write songs like this anymore. And yes I knew a green eyed lady who had a lot of passion.

Nice to see real musicians actually playing... Bringing it together nice and tight, not using backing tracks or auto-tune.

Sugarloaf’s signature song performed live on the “Midnight Special” with Wolfman Jack. Those were the days of the 1970’s that showed how creative singers and songwriters were. There certainly won’t be anymore musical shows 🥁🎸🎹 like the Midnight Special. If you attended High School in the 1970’s and you were into Rock 🎸 Music 🎶 and, didn’t have anywhere to go. Then you could tune into the Midnight 🕛 Special on your 📺 TV. Sugarloaf was one ☝️ of my favorite groups of the 70’s.😊

Green Eyed Lady-1970 Aw, the 60s are now officially over. In steps 1970 the beginning of disco, funk, R&B soul, jazz fusion, glam & punk. This decade will change music forever.
