These are my thoughts on how Peter Buck plays Green Grow the Rushes. This video is made in support of my blog, Deconstructing Peter Buck--check it out: guitarpeterbuc...

Buck is one of my guitar heroes! I was a Rush/Zep etc fan when a friend introduced me to this album and I was hooked. He really changed the way I think about the role of the guitar in a band, and how important (or not) a guitar solo is.

I love rush and Lifeson is such a master of the guitar (as Peart was of the drums and Lee is of the bass). I watch just about every interview I can with any of them, and saw rush live at least 3 times (I know, not a TRUE fan!!). Of course, that interest for me actually came after R.E.M. which is a bit backwards. Lifeson certainly minimized the solo at times and maximized it at others. But I appreciate both him and PB for their unique styles which can hardly ever be mistaken for anyone else!!

+AnotherBadSpeech Thanks, man! I learned a lot of little nuances watching PB play it in the videos. It sure is fun to play.

Just trying to learn this and there is something that I think maybe happens with the turnaround of the descending riff. I'll try to explain. With the hammer-on from D to E (7 to 9) on the 3rd string I think there may well be an open B (2nd string) immediately after and before the slide up from 4 to 7. I've seen a few videos of this song and it seems to be something that is missed because it's a tricky thing to master. Makes sense with Peter Buck's 'open strings' habit on a lot of REM songs though

The tone on this one has been one of the best of the videos you have made. I actually like the Gibson you are playing better than the Rick. I was up recently late and went up to Musicians Friend and they had a Stupid Deal of the day on a cheap Epiphone Les Paul for $200 Off. Big fat neck but I'm loving the tone just as much as the Rick 360 I have. Finally broke down and bought a OCD but I will tell you the Joyo Ultimate drive is really close on tone. Also picked up at AC15c1 for $350 used but I still like the Bugera V22 Infinium I play through better. I also use a Classic Vibe Tele White Blond with the Alnico 3's with a 4 way switch (Get a good bump in the 4th position). Keep em coming. Great job

Thanks. I really need to write down the settings for each of these. Part of the sound is probably the .013s. But part could be the humbuckers. Part could be the speakers (it may have been when I had one speaker in the twin unplugged which gives a cool broken sound). Anyway, appreciate the comment and thoughts.
