Can't forget that you have to find the source/ reason the algae is growing and got to the point it has. There's some sort or Imbalance in the tank thats causing it in the first place. Without finding that out and fixing it, anything anyone does will only be temporary. It will come back. I'm dealing with a really bad case with a clients tank, which is why I am here as I'm trying to research a little more

I use a frilled chopstick and it works a treat at removing hair algae. I cut small frills over the last 5 centimeter (~2 inch) and I roll that trough my weeping moss like I'm making cotton candy. actually quite a relaxing job to do and it keeps the moss nice and tidy.

Good ideas. Plants work well. I use a toothbrush to gently scrub over wood and stones, a bottle brush to collect algae from amongst leaves and my finger tips to pull it up from the substrate. None of those methods works brilliantly but keeps it somewhat under control. I do like some algae in the tank though, looks natural.

Use an old toothbrush. The bristles catch the hair algae and then you just twirl the toothbrush and collect large masses of algae!

Thank you I believe in that I have two planted aquariums I have a bit of algae issues but I have some cleanup crew that does the job but I also manually remove some of the larger amounts of algae that grows on my plant leaves and on my driftwood and I just scrub them off of the toothbrush and Everything flourish on their own and fish will pick At the algae so everything is pretty much balance so far.

Nice video and well timed. I am having some of this growing in my carpet of my Dutch scape project. I have dropped an hour off of the light cycle and removed some manually with a toothbrush before water changes. I was also thinking of getting some Amano Shrimp, any experience with these guys and this type of algae?

yes, they'll eat most algae but in a rimless they are prone to crawling out, so be careful there heh. If dialing back an hour of light doesn't work, ironically try adding light and co2...AND lots of plants....float plants and make it look ugly it's so full of other clippings... often times that with the water changes will get a handle on it. Also, dont be affraid to trim the heck out of Dutch scapes. You're in it for the long haul, and it'll equalibriate if you fight it a while. Good luck!

Thats for the info. I have it in goldfish fry tubs. They are outdoors some tubs have it, some dont. Just the tip of adding more plants helps me. As the tubs with more plants aren't having a major problem. Thanks for the explaination

Adding competitive algae like a real marimo moss ball helps too. They are actually algae not Moss and they will suck up lots of the nutrients that algae loves. There are a lot of new moss balls out there now, I have no idea what they are but they grow a lot faster, I don’t know if they will help or not. Duckweed competes with the nutrients and also blocks some light. You can also use a UV light as an algae scrubber.

Awesome video again, I'm trying to get my tanks at 6.8 pH, and have a KH of 6. Tetra's are my goal for this tank.,, I tried rams but my pH was 8.2,,, they all died. I'm just learning about high range pH., I would even go to doing a dark water tank if I need to, ...my tap water is 7.6 pH, and zero alkalinity. I buffer with alkalinity buffer and acid buffer... I'm looking around 6.8 pH and 5 KH.. I'll test again in morning. Will hold off on new fish for a day or so , I hope... I'm impatient. .

Look up my video on how algae works/ the plants and algae cycle... i mention a blackout for 16 to 18 hours (like blankets over the tank.) And then very intense lightz while they're on 6 hours or so of the day for 3 to 5 days. Also getting caridina malawa or even neocaridina to clean the fine bits of moss and leaf. Good luck!

It's actually a 40 bowfront....which makes it feel like a 75 or 55 basically. At first i hated how tall it was, but once I filled in pleco caves and Kribensis nests at the bottom along with corydoras.... then the mossy and plant covered sticks in the midwater allows the little tetras, and rasboras a place to hide and or also swim in schools- whereas, the top is left open for endlers....and the whole height is a really great feature for stem plants or bulbs...so it has worked out to hold double the fish/bio load also

Amano shrimp, or algae killing chemicals are likely your only hope. You could put the moss in a bowl, then hit it with a spray bottle of seachem flourish excell...and that may work, but other than that... complete darkness most hours (18 or so)...and super bright light for the 5 or 6 hours of lights a day along with water changes, sometimes work

i had some hair algae start on my vallisneria and on some of my java moss, the lights are on a timer. it was 12 hours, it was too much, went to 10 and it was still too much so i just switched it to 8 hours a day. last week i noticed a huge growth in the hair algae all over all of a sudden. i dont know what caused a spike in the growth but ive been trying to control it and get rid of it

I left my gravel taken out from my tank outside for a month now, I just left it in a large basin it starts to spawn little black snails, mosquito larvae (which I fed to my fish) and some weird plants that I now learned that it was green hair algae. 1st thing, if there is no flow agitation of water inside tank, then there is a possibility of algae, 2nd. co2 is less, 3rd, if you trim and replant, then the dirt form from substrate sets on the leaves, 4. adding access amount of iron with out CO2. 5th, bright light with out CO2.

In the past I've picked on your shrimp stuff. But each to their own and with neo's I have a completely different idea with genetics. But saw this and I am a subscriber, thought I need a different idea what could be causing an algae problem. After all the years I have been keeping fish, (I am 52 and started keeping fish at 14, so a bloody long time) never ever had this issue in my discus paludarium. It has been a constant battle with fuzz and then black beard. Have had paludariums before and no issues at all. Really never had algae except when I really tried to grow algae in a Sulawesi shrimp tank, and I really failed at growing algae, but now the total opposite is happening with this tank. I do 25 percent daily water changes, it is a planted tank, but I had issues with my original canister filters where I had canisters x 2 very large UV canisters, the casing for the UV buggered up and leaked and I threw them out and took all the filter media and put it in the new canisters. My discus are huge, I got them small, but they are huge now. All parameters are normal and constantly at 0. This tank has been going now over 12 months. Tried peroxide, tried liquid CO2 and both together. This is really pissing the hell off of me because I wanted this tank to be a touch of the Amazon if you know what I mean? I wanted it to be as natural as I could get given what I have here and my know how. I have two tiny canisters as well that feed the paludarium/land part with a constant weeping drip. I wish this was just green algae, just grab a chop stick and can twurl it around and so very easy to remove. But my plants are constantly covered in fuzz, I find that really amazing for testing 0 nitrates all the time and with daily small water changes. I am always hands on and remove as much as I can, by hand as well. But would eventually like this to be a low maintenance tank like I have had with previous paludariums. But not getting there at all. Also have a big plecco and 4 Siamese algea eaters and about 30 cory's, started with 6, but they bred, a lot. And I have failed with wisteria in that tank it just grabs stuff and dies. Ludwigia is the only one that grows and stays clean.

Let me give that some thought... hmm maybe you're getting an influx of phosphates somewhere? That can increase algae metabolism insanely. Try the 6 hours of high light / 18 of total dark...draping the set up (ambient light allows algae to grow, but plants need more and thus, a ton of people dont realize they have light on their algae far more than just the aquarium light cycle suggests. 0 nitrates means either the nitrogen cycle is completely broken down and ammonia and nitrates may be present (i assume you tested that though...) so my best guess is that it's a nasty strain ...and youll need to trim and clean as much off as possible, then make sure phosphates arent high...and perhaps add liquid carbon or co2 gas to make sure the plants have fuel to build structure with.

So I've only ever had green hair algae (that I know of) once and I noted that it seemed to stem from the hornwort for some reason. Do you know why that would be? It's such a fast growing plant so for me it doesn't make sense. However, I am new to the hobby so I could just be wrong

Probably since it floats to the top and has the most light exposure and a perfect brush-like structure for algea to grab onto. So if the tank it was from had any algae, it will get spread via hornwort. Great observation. Thanks again for joining the channel and our little fish family here. Cheers

I find the length of time and type of light you use makes a difference, I have 3 "father fish," 200lt tanks with zero algae, I split time the lights to no more than 8hrs a day, use 1600-2300lumin X 6000k led cool blue daylight spot-lights on WiFi control and add home generated Co2 (sugar, water, yeast) I have 4"-5" deep substrates and they are heavily planted.

Hair algae is only usually present in a new setup (un cycled tank) so all you have to do is wait and it will go on its own. If it's appeared in a mature setup then you've had a crash or spike it's that simple. Just ignore it it's part of the process .

Powdered blue dwarf gourami... usually they only sell females since males are very mean, but as long as it's solid blue and no red stripes on the blue, theyre female and totally peaceful

In my experience anytime I use a hang on back as opposed to a submerged air filter it seems that the hang on back grows the hair algae like you had it kind of dripping off the front edge of the filter I think some of that breaks off and goes into the water and gets stuck on the plants

Well it definitely can.... its a met surface area with tons of of co2/oxygen and nitrogen just for the simple fact that aerated water picks those elements up...so while it may grow algae there first, it was already growing in your tank and simply shows it's self on the spillway first. The algae are microscopic in the tank, and usually - nearly 100% of the time actually, tanks have algae and it's fine and healthy. We may not see it, due to their cell size- but even in 90% water change tanks, itll hold on. Raising the speed will help eliminate it, as will manual removal. In that tank, however- it's not much of a problem. The bladderwart is what drives me nuts!

Floating plants (Amazon frogbit) by far worked the best for me. It vanished from many of the surfaces, even the ones still exposed to full light. But you need a verity of plant types to use up all the nutrients. Otherwise the gaps are filled by algae. You get the same thing in ponds, summer sun and not many plants means algae grows like crazy.

Yes that can help (if they aren't able to perform photosynthesis due to the thickness of algae). However if they're healthy and from a large plant...id wait because the energy they suck up to keep growing- is the same as the algae and it can help starve out the algae (if the plant cant grow due to thick algae...then it's pointless and you should trim.) Great question!

@@leo2o915 if you can gently manually get it off (anubias or sword plants etc) then just do that and make sure you keep nitrates and phosphates low ... gas co2 is ideal, but getting it out of high light can help...as well as cutting your light back to 6 hours for a week or so...and putting a cloth over the tank whilst the light is off...because algae can grow from a 30 watt light bulb in a room, or ambient light enough if you can read a book in it...but plants need that strong light...and plants will win at using the nutrients if placed toe to toe with the algae. Some carbon in the filter could help a bit... or seachem excell if you dont have any grass, small crypts or valisaneria you're worried about melting back. Good luck & hopefully my "kill algae " videos can help prior to using chemicals....they become a big feedback loop of needing them usually

This is cascade jadite/quartz with jade inclusions. I went up about 4,000 feet in elevation (1330m) and found rock slides... pulled my pickup truck off to the side near an old mining road in washington state...and collected them.

@@Fishtory That's amazing! No such rocks to be found here in Florida, mostly dolomite. Can you explain or confirm for me something about breeding (I'm totally new to this)?... Apparently, I just learned that shrimp of different species will not interbreed (like neocaridina vs caridina), but I saw a chart that said Yellow shrimp will not breed with Red Cherry shrimp, or Blue Pearl shrimp, yet aren't they all neocaridina? I found some more info on google that said they can interbreed, but not necessarily because they're not of the same genus. So I'm concluding that if I'd like to keep things pure, I shouldn't try mixing anything of the same species, even if they are different genus, but mixing neocaridina with caridina is okay, as long as i focus the parameters to favor the caridina?

Is neocardina the species, while heteropoda the genus, or is it the other way around? Yeah hornwort is great for that...duckweed (which you'll never get rid of haha) and water lettuce or salvinia aka cat's tongue work great for all that also

Hahaha yeah serotonin and dopamine symbolic of my anxiety, depression, happiness, and addictions to both substances but also healthy reward based brain loops. Sort of each arm is balancing the other.

@@VyvienneEaux oh yeah totally... i mean they do thousands of different tasks, everywhere from your digestive system up to your brain and endocrine system. However I've also had serotonin syndrome from meds administered incorrectly, so i definitely know the power it can have over regulation of neurotransmitters throughout conscious and unconcious mind. I mean i have an ATP particle and a neuron tattooed on my legs too (axons and dendrites of one cluster) then skin cells splitting in another tattoo. I forgot you are well versed in science....usually it's too complicated and i just say its happy vs sad...or anxious vs depression / pleasure vs pain....(i have a poppy tattooed also)

Some plants are impervious to it. Valls,Water Wisteria,Crypts for a start. They never get a strand of it when it infests the rest of the tank. Avoid those that are magnets for the algae...Java Moss!....Bacopa for some reason gets it bad. Toothbrush..or fork and spaghetti twirl it off wood and rocks. But,on wood,Pleco's keep it away. Right now for me..its JavaMoss. I wont get rid of my big clumps of Java..I just need time to work on the problem.

@@Fishtory Ok,after posting,I took a big clump of Java moss pruned from an even larger clump and all had hair algae coating them. I took the pruned clump and put in a jar with enough Hydrogen Peroxide to cover it. After ten minutes,I put it back in the tank,tied it down..and lo and behold a week later that algae turned a light green- and get this- the minnows were eating the now blanched algae. Today that clump was cleaned. I cant remove all plants..so I drained the tank down and poured the peroxide on what was infested. Next week,I will let you know if the Peroxide works. Right now,fish are fine. Even subwassertang is not bothered by peroxide. Seems to be very safe.

I use a large like 16 to 20 Gauge syringe under water and just turn off any pumps and filters off and then use a dab of it here and there in problem spots (fot denser or hard algea). Be careful with a 10 minute bath, hydrogen peroxide can kill cells super swiftly, and yes the cell walls actually melt and then even creatures that cant digest celluloss, ...can help eat the goo. lastly, be careful not to let dead algea sit too long and up increasing your nitrogen and carbon waste molecules....and of course the dreaded ammonia! dun dun dunlnnnlnsh

Or too long of light ...or too much phosphate in the water column. Co2 only fixes it if you have a good enough light and fertilizer source to allow the plants to utilize the co2 increase

The fish called “Flying Fox” is not synonymous with the fish called “Siamese Algae Eater.” They are not even in the same genus. The former's scientific name is Epalzeorhynchos kalopterus and the latter's correct name seems to be Crossocheilus langei. The “Flying Fox” is not much of an algae eater, whereas a few species in the genus Crossocheilus are, to varying degrees. From what I've read the best of these is C. langei, although several Crossocheilus species are often sold as “Siamese Algae Eater” with the scientific name Crossocheilus oblongus or Crossocheilus siamensis, which are both invalid. It's not uncommon for the “Flying Fox” to be falsely sold as Crossocheilus as well, so one needs to be very careful when buying “Siamese Algae Eaters.”

Yes flying fox aren't very nice either. I've done a bunch of tests and i find that the best "SAE" is reticulatus babies...and by a long shot...black beard and green hair or any dense algae is their calling. They eat their own weight daily, until about 3.5 or 4 inches long...then they slow substantially
