MD thank you so much - I've just discovered blue/green algae in my tank and I was absolutely gutted. You've cheered me up and given me the ideas and inspiration to re-do the tank as soon as we are allowed to go back to fish shops. I am going to have better flow, less built up areas and use loads of the plants you get from Tropica. I was feeling rather like a failure, but seeing your video today was perfect timing and has really cheered me up. Thank you SO much 😗💗👍👍

I agree that sometimes you need to start over. It sucks, but sometimes you have no choice and it's ok. It's actually fun! Don't throw away all your plants. Some plants can be saved. I just use peroxide to soak my plants in after taking down the tank and it usually saves most of your plants.

Just discovered this channel (Dropping George Farmer that £5 super chat was worth at least one new follower!) and really enjoying the content, always nice to find a good channel with professional looking videos from the UK! With so many open top tanks how do you deal with evaporation/humidity, do you ventilate the fish room? Also, in winter, how do you keep the tanks warm, just normal heaters and relay on your insulation in the shed and have a big electricity bill at the end?

Great tips! I love your channel. I have my own 50 gallon dirted tank and I’m going crazy over the diatoms sticking to the leaves of almost every plant I have. I have it outdoors but it doesn’t receive that much direct sunlight. I recently restarted the tank and I’ll see if plucking the bad infested leaves out the trick.

I started a small aquarium (60 x 28 x 28 cm) after Christmas. It's a cold water aquarium standing in my living room (20-21 °C). I went against the rules because I introduced my fish immediately because I had them in an aquarium outside which already had ice on it. The fish are 10 White Cloud Mountain minnow (Tanichthys albonubes) and 6 indigenous ninespine stickleback (Pungitius pungitius) that I will put in my pond when finished. I planted my aquarium with fast-growing and slow-growing plants (Echinodorus grisebachii, E. paniculatus, Hydrocotyle leucocephala, Ludwigia perennis, L. glandulosa, Hygrophila polysperma, and Heteranthera zosterifolia). Of course it took some time for the plants to start growing, the fast growers kicked in quicker than the slow ones. Diatom algae developed on the aquarium walls and on the leaves, but nothing crazy. I bought 10 Amano shrimp but they couldn't keep up. Then I introduced an indigenous plant: hornwort (Ceratophyllum demersum). This plant is native to most of the world, including Europe, Asia, Africa, and North America. It excretes substances that inhibit the growth of phytoplankton and cyanobacteria (blue-green algae), known as allelopathy. This plant had to start up from turions which are a kind of dormant plant parts that overwinter. Two weeks later these turions started growing and it grows really fast, up to 10 cm per day. Now my aquarium is completely free of visible algae. The algae on the walls are completely gone and the algae that were growing on some of the other plant leaves are dead and are eaten by the snails. I will not say it's all because of this plant because it's now 5-6 weeks after I started the aquarium so it is much more balanced. I assume the internal Eheim Biopower filter is now active, so it's probably a combination of factors but I find it striking the algae all vanished after the hornwort started growing like crazy.

I've had a 5 gallon for more than 6 months. It has one betta fish and hitchhiking seed shrimp. The filter is very little flow for the betta. I've never had like any algae tbh 👀 my light was originally on for 6 hours then I increased it to 8 hours an hour at a time with a lot of time inbetween (like a few weeks to make sure the increase hasnt put off something and if algae does start to grow, I know the variable that caused it was the light). I also dose with seachem excel every other day, a bit of potassium once a week and flourish twice a week. I have no idea what it is, I think I'm just really lucky haha. Redid my old 37 gal. I'm not sure if I'll be so lucky this time haha (sometimes the sun gets to it and causes a lot of tough green algae on the glass).

It’s a premium synthetic filter resin. They are white micro beads that filter organic material including phosphates and ammonia. They come in a fine filter mesh and can be recharged by soaking them in a bleach and water mixture. It turns brown when at capacity and white again when recharged. After the bleach you can soak them in a heavy dechlorinator mixture and reuse.

I have had success clearing minor green water algae by adding freshwater clams and mussels to the tank. Be careful with the mussels because they dig themselves in, then dig around the entire tank under the sand rather like a giant rabbit snail or trumpet snail. The clams, on the other hand, will stay put.

There are two main reasons why algae isn't an issue for you. Firslty, the tap water in the UK is very stable and low in organic and inorganic pollutants. But the main reason is the position of your aquarium lights. They are all at least several inches above the surface of the water. Most aquarium lights or hoods come with brackets that put the light just one or two inches above the water. It took me a long time to realise that this was the cause of all my algae woes. I was amazed to find that there are very few aftermarket solutions to raise lights to 6 inches above the tank, where they should be, unless you have a rack or are prepared to drill holes in tge ceiling to hang them.. I've had to cobble together a solution of my own, but once I did it, the algae that had been ravaging my poor plants went away almost immediately.

Dear MD , i'm Antonie from the Netherlands i love you video's en Aquascaping a lot to ! And I am sorry to bother you with this, you must have a lot of people that ask you things, but sinds about 8 days now from the moment i received my plants i tried to make an aquarium for my 3 lovely kids that are really crazy about fish anf plants and your video's. But i don't have aquasoil because i could not get it at the time, so i settled for jbl proscape lava in combination with dernelle design stones, raw gravel and in the front al layer of jbl yellow sand but within 8 days i think i have all kinds of alae even though i refresh water every day, test te water and clean the alae as mutch as i can. But i don't know what to do at the moment, i fear my plants are slowly dying and don't know if i still can save them and do it right from whatever i am doing wrong, its my first time and do it for my kids, i did use api tabs to and sachets with substrate underneat and some liquite plant furtilizer of dernelle, have a juwel 121 x 41 x 55 cm tank and using 1 internal juwel bio M and 1 external eheim 2213 pomp both with substrate ultimate from biohome . I don't know where else to turn to before it is to late could i Please send you some pics some how and would you want to look at it and give me some advise do i have to take it all out and start again and can i save the plants or not Please please advise, i wil clean and water change again in a few , alle the tests show no nitrate, nitrit, chlorine, ph between 7.2 and 7.6 kh between 10 and 15, gh >7 and lower then > 14.i don't know what is wrong but i think i have to act fast.😟 may i send you some pic's somehow ? And that you get back at me for some good advise and what to do in your opinion. THanks A LOTT ! And Sorry for the long message 🤗😚😚 If there would be anything else you need the know to tackle my problem, let me know and how to send you the pic's if you want to help me. Awaiting your reply. Algae cleanup crew: Otocinclus catfish, Nerite/zebra snails and shrimp. I bought 4 otos for my 15 gallon that had gotten green with hair algae, it carpeted every plant. After just one week they had mowed down all the algae on the lower half of the plants.

Hello, thank you for your many informative videos. I have since the start of my new baccalaureate what seems to be Diatoms, could you tell me how to get rid of them, I have not (or no longer because I was not able to test my water before this morning even while in the meantime I treated with a resin (PhosGuard from Seachem) and if there was any there was no more at the moment I write this comment) when the Silicates which are significant during of the presence of Diatoms I am at> 6 on the JBL color chart which would confirm that they are indeed Diatoms but on the other hand I cannot lower this rate, any idea how to do this?

I love some algae, especially just the green dust surface algae, I adjust my lights to where I just get a little bit of green growing on the rocks it’s like having plants in there it sucks up nutrients and shrimp love it and snails love it. One of my best tricks, buy cheap lights, aqua need full spectrum lights for 20 bucks off of eBay will grow most easy and medium grade plants pretty well they might grow a little slower but I leave my lights on 13-16 hours a day and almost never have problems if the snails aren’t keeping up with it I just take an hour off the timer and it fixes itself. The stringy stuff I find usually is in the high flow area I find if I can disperse that flow it tends to go away. On the tanks with glass lids the algae that grows under the lights are usually just scrape it off and let it dump into the tank and the snails and shrimp love it and it’s usually gone after a couple days.

Hi! I have a question. I have a 15 gallon tank planning on getting more fish after corona. But anyway I have two Dwarf Gourami’s and a 15 gallon freshwater tank with led lights. I keep them on during the day and turn them off at night. Yet my fish tend to sleep during the day and wake up at night. I want to be able to see my dwarfs move around during the day instead of the nighttime. How do I get them to swap there sleeping schedule so they are awake during the day and sleep at night. They are my only fish in the tank at the moment.

My daughter's glofish tank has green water, and green spots on the glass. I notice the live hornwort and duck weed go nuts with the blue LEDs. I wonder if the algae loves that blue light. My other 5 gallon tank is my favorite tank, never gives me problems... I'll try less light.

Hi, my name is Jerry of all the people on KZbin. Talks about fish tanks, care maintenance, or whatever. You are the one I watched the most. But I have a problem. I have a black beard problem. My fish tank has more beard than I do on my face. Will you please do a video on Blackbeard algae? I'm about to put my whole fish tank over a fire and boil it. It sounds funny but I took all the rocks in my fish tank. Put in a 5 gallon container. Put it on my stove and boiled it for 5 minutes it works. But now Now it's on my plants on my glass on everthing. H E L P ! ! !

Good morning!! Having a tank only set up for about 2 weeks now (planted with a few Cory cats for now) I'm watching the tank like a hawk😂.. so I really appreciated this video this video this morning. I also have on hand a small UV filter.. I know it's only good for the actual water that cycles through it... But at what point should I incorporate it into my tank?? Any ideas? I figured I'd run it for a day once a week for maintenance? I have no idea what I'm doing haha.. I know how to work a toothbrush and water changes 😂 but not sure on a UV filter!
