Make the entire line above grade (elevated) or underground like bigger cities do. Please dont undersell Calgary and take any cheaper options. everyone will regret it once the city expands. Just the traffic at saddle ridge station is a complete mess around the circle because of the train being on grade.

Especially Centre St., there’s a shit ton of instances where collision with a car or hitting a pedestrian can occur. Also shouldn’t Calgary consider how much foot traffic the Centre St. C-Trains will bring? Odds are Centre St will be a whole mess of generification with the C-Train lines, otherwise what’s the point?

Oh man... I remember when there was no station there and that area was awesome. No traffic lights pretty much, smooth traffic, etc. I don't even drive and it made me mad. Like why didn't they trench that station like 45th Street Station West? Now there's traffic lights out the yin yang and the train in the way. It's a nightmare now.

Totally agree with this point, green line looks awesome, just recently taken LRT and having it above grade in the core was bush league, it has killed businesses along 7ave, MacLeod- west bound. The block from centre Street West has changed since was taking a bus to Crescent Heights H.S. 40 years ago. Follow Vancouver and you won't go wrong. Don't cheap out. But the way this province is going this city is going to end up like Detroit.

A car shouldn’t be used in urban settings. I understand your concerns and value them though a car is the most expensive (for you AND the city) and damaging form of transportation. I fully support getting around the suburbs in a car, but in downtown, you might want to park it at a park-and-ride and take the train. You won’t have to deal with traffic and by taking a car off the road (YOU’RE in the train) it’ll be less traffic for others. Have a great day 🥰

The red and blue lines are grade separated. Why can't this one be? At the very least put in boom gates like Edmonton
@battlestar79
@battlestar79 4 жыл бұрын
The main benefit of Low Floor LRT is simpler at-grade stations that are only a little more than standard curb height, as compared to high floor LRT stations. This enables Low Floor stations to be better integrated into existing communities on existing streets without much re-design and re-construction. Low Floor station platforms are not much higher than existing roadways/sidewalks, requiring much smaller ramps. Calgary has their entire downtown LRT routes planned backwards in this regard. They have the existing High Floor LRT train running at street level in downtown and proposed Low Floor LRT train running underground in the downtown core. I understand Calgary developed their High Floor train many years ago before the modern Low Floor LRV units became available. But given they already have a substantial amount of High Floor LRV vehicles in service on a number of existing track alignments, why not then just build the new Green Line with High Floor LRT/LRV technology as well? It's like the last LRT route to be built, why make it different? The Low Floor LRV vehicles and parts and maintenance facilities are incompatible with High Floor LRV vehicles, parts and maintenance facilities. Therefore there is no flexibility for each line to distribute/share LRV units across the network. Network-wide, there will always be more LRV units in standby mode, or in maintenance mode than necessary, than if they could utilize/share resources across a singular consistent network. From a Low Floor vs High Floor perspective only, Edmonton has utilized the High Floor and Low Floor technologies better as their intended purpose. (This is in part due to fate of timing of each technology, as High floor was invented decades ago, and Low Floor only becoming mainstream only recently). Edmonton has their existing High Floor LRT trains running in a metro style tunnel through the downtown. Edmonton is now building the new Low Floor Valley Line LRT alignment on the surface in the downtown. Generally I don't agree with building LRT at-grade in a downtown, because it limits overall corridor efficiency between trains and road vehicles....Unless it can be built in its entire own corridor with no road running immediately adjacent/parallel to it and intersection crossing spacing is sufficient to allow good traffic flow. In Edmonton's case, the length of each Valley Line train (number of connected Low Floor LRV units) is limited to the distance between downtown blocks (particularly between 100 St and 101 St). Based on the same frequency as the existing High Floor Capital line, this limits the capacity of the Low Floor Valley Line to about 6,600 passengers per hour, vs the High Floor line of capacity of 12,000 passengers per hour. Also, operating a train with roadway traffic signal timings defeats the purpose of having a train run on its own autonomous uninterpreted faster paced schedule. If a key objective of LRT operations means utilizing roadway traffic signal timings, then a much cheaper BRT system would make much more sense. Another key objective of mass transit is to move as many people as possible in the shortest time. Commuters only care about getting from A to B in the shortest time. Another objective of mass transit is to reduce roadway congestion, but if trains are interfering with traffic signals, then the purpose is diminished.

YES! I completely agree with you. I live a 20 minute walk from North Pointe terminal (5 minute bike or bus ride), and when I tell you this will be my main transportation into downtown (DNT) I wouldn’t be lying. I have been discussing the low floor LRV topic for a while. All the points you mention are correct, and I agree with them. I feel that we should take cars off the road, instead of moving the train out of the way. One way is congestion pricing, charging drovers a fee to enter the DNT area. I think this should be done similar to London (UK) or NYC. Not only would this make the train more efficient (it already is extremely “people per area” efficient). Please, have a great day 😊

I would like to see the whole greenline underground. Putting the LTR above ground causes to much disruption for the communities that the train goes through. Has the city looked at what bus routes are being replaced by the LRT? Are they creating pull ins at all stops for the buses. I see that in some areas Centre Street is reduced to 1 lane and not having bus pull ins slows down traffic all the way to downtown. I understand that the idea is to increase ridership on the LRT instead of driving but there will still be drivers and they need to be considered in this plan along with public transit commuters, reducing the lanes down to 1 lane in places does not make sense. I believe that the city is being short sited in their plan. Put it all underground so that it does not disrupt our communities.

Joanne Gaalaas - there are strategic locations where LRT can and should be built either above or below ground, like at major arterial road crossings, over freeways including over the interchange ramps, etc. But the more that can be built at-grade (ground level), including stations, the cheaper it is to build, and easier it is for users to access the stations. All options have pros and cons. It must be noted to that in order to transition from ground to tunnel or ground to elevated, it takes a longer distance for the slope for the train to be able to climb vs what road vehicles can do. That impacts station locations because stations are generally built on level and straight sections only Relative cost of construction per Kilometer in order of cheapest to most expensive (taking into account all construction in the corridor): $ Surface / At-Grade. $$ Trench / Cut and Cover (ie Calgary 17 Ave SW). $$$ Elevated (ie like Vancouver SkyTrain). $$$$$ Tunnelled (ie Downtown Edmonton / Subway style).

I'm sure that a decision on which low floor LRVs the Green Line is going to use is a decision that will be made much further down the road, but I am curious to see (what appears to be) the Flexity Outlook vehicles used in the renderings. My concern with that would be that they have a 70km/h top speed whereas Siemens S70 vehicles have a top speed around 100km/h I think. Regardless, I look forward to learning more about the possible vehicles that will be used when that decision nears!

Build the entire North Line above ground like Vancouver Skytrain; green strips and bike paths run along beneath, and grid roads continue to pass beneath. Land is used to the max. But instead the usual short-sighted city planners have decided to blow the budget on a subway from downtown to about 23rd Ave N., then ruin scenic Centre Street north of that, similar to the barren moonscape of LRT along 36 St. N.E.. Subways cost roughly 10x as much as surface track, build and elevated train. And aside from destroying scenic Centre Street North, what bonehead has decided to throw Centre St. through Highland and Tuxedo entirely to the dogs by reducing traffic to one lane, and only there? Give your heads a shake city planning; you want to spend $B's, so rip out a row of houses; huge gains for lesser pains. Centre street is a major traffic artery and should remain so, destroyed. Calgarians have to look back on short-sighted stupiditye of past planners (e.g. Crowchild Bridge/Memorial bottlenecks), and it looks like this will continue. When future city hall finally realizes the single lane blunder through Highland/Tuxedo has to be fixed, will Centre already be boxed in by high end real estate, approved by ignoramuses?!

Here's an article giving relative costs of surface, vs elevated, vs underground LRT (paragraph 2). pedestrianobservations.com/2012/09/25/relative-costs-of-transit-construction/ As it mentions, these ballpark estimates depend on city, terrain, land costs etc. I used 10x costs above, taken from a recent radio interview of a city spokesperson.. Imagine how far they could build and elevated railway for the cost of proposed short subway north from downtown, and how the spirit of existing neighborhoods could be preserved. I've cycled the skytrain route from Vancouver to New Westminster and the neighborhoods remain quite nice, not slashed down middle with a ground level barrier. C of C, please elevate your vision. Thanks for the great vid.

As the City of Calgary gets bigger road traffic will increase, as a city of over a Million people do you not want to plan for the future. Wouldn’t it be a smart idea and a safe idea to remove all level crossings and any interaction between Pedestrians, Cars/Truck and Trains that meet at the transit lines? Having trains lines running down the center of main road is a terrible idea, removing a lane of traffic on an already tight road for space will make things worse for public safety. Plus you throw in level crossing at ever road intersection makes me think the City of Calgary and the city planners have no idea what you are doing. Having to stop at level crossing will cause bottle necks at intersections, causing loss of productivity across the city and not to mention the safety of the public and road users. How many deaths will there be because First Responders are stuck in traffic because of congestion caused by level crossing. Have you not studied the traffic flow and congestion caused by the existing rail lines in the city, have you not heard of the deaths caused by pedestrians being hit by trains. Why are the public being hit by trains, it’s because stations are designed wrong, intersections are congested and you allow traffic to come in close proximity to trains. Google Melbourne and the removal of Level Crossing, google Singapore and platform safety barriers, if you want more people to travel on the transit system make it better, make it safer for all not just pedestrians. It may cost more but it will SAVE LIVES and you grandchildren will thank you

I agree with your points regarding grade separations. At-grade crossings only make sense where 1) there is at least 400m between a rail crossing and a road-to-road intersection 2) crossing collector or local roads with low vehicle volumes. For rail crossings on arterial roads, especially one where intersections are immediately adjacent to the rial line, grade separations should always be used. The best alternative techniques are: 1) Cut-and cover (trench) method (cheaper than full tunnel boring, and can still tie stations into surrounding community with relative ease/simplicity, not as destructive/invasive). Cut and cover method does however conflict with any buried utility crossings. 2) Elevating...advantage is the supporting columns/pylons can be spaced to various lengths to bridge over roads, railways and buried utilities, etc. Other land uses can be accommodated under the elevated track guideways like parking, green spaces, plazas, etc. Trains do not interfere at all with vehicles, pedestrians, cyclists, animals and vice versa. In downtown's, the elevated stations can be tied directly into elevated pedways or adjacent second floor building lobbies.

Our drivers need to get a lot better, and perhaps if we all had requirements of snow tires, regular vehicle inspections, then it may be a possibility that level grade LRT may be a good and low risk option. But that is unlikely, therefore it would be better elevated, or underground. Considering the snow and weather in Calgary, underground would be most reasonable, however the costs associated with it may be undesirable. Increasing the population density around centre st. (which there are more apartments creeping up) may be able to justify the costs. For long term Calgary, if the population does keep increasing then underground would be likely a far better investment. The current plan seems like a recipe for disaster, with who knows how many traffic accidents occurring, low speed (inefficient) LRT and disruption of service.

I sure hope CoC monitors this comment section... What the heck are you doing with the center street north section!!! Keep it under ground. I can't believe that you'd actually think that running it at street level, in the middle of the road, is a good idea! So now there is going to be no 3 lanes for rush hour and it will be reduced to one lane each direction? Seriously guys wake up! A mass transit system should never interfere with the continuity and flow of vehicle traffic. Have you learned nothing from the colossal mistake that 36st is? Where are you finding your civil engineer's? Maybe this should be a provincial project?

Build the entire green line underground = better planning for generations to come. Less accidents, underground stations are warmer, less wear and tear of track (No need to shut down train service during the long weekend to do maintenance work, which is common problem in Calgary), do not interfere with traffic, etc. LRT- a prescription for disaster; LRT causes accidents resulting in death, destruction of property, traffic delays, street closures, and congestion. Hate LRT, It's slow compare to real metro, all the power line really kills landscaping makes streets look really ugly, and design of the car... really bad looking.

I can see many places where I can get kill in a simple snow related accident by this C-train design that goes by the cars!! worse possible design. Traffic is gonna be worse. This C train is actually gonna go slower than the current one. I did the calculation and it is gonna take me more time from home to school than it takes me from the currently. And don't even mention that the stations are not gonna be sheltered!!! Is like the perfect transit solution for 1930 YYC. I actually asked them about the long commute time and they said it was not important because the train was for people who didn't have CARS!! . The train is for people like me who dont like driving because it is a waste of time to sit in a car, and who love the environment and prefer a clean city. Should not take more than 1hr to go from one side of the city to the other. They also told me that train by the cars, and the low plataform non-sheltered design was to integrate the C -train to the community (more like in Europe.). I dont think it does that at all. Have you seen the Freccia Ros in italy, or the trains in Hong Kong!!! that is integrating the community and providing services. we need to built for the future. By the time thsi project is completed in 2028 they are gonna have to start building it again. maybe have less stations but better built.

If you've ever driven on roads next to CTrains before, I'm sure it'll be just like that. With concrete barricades diving the two most of the time. I'd like to see the calculations you've made if you don't mind. What design would you propose? All elevated to minimize traffic & car accidents? Would be nice if money and unsightliness for houses weren't issues. All underground? that's one way to put us in a trillion dollars of debt lol. I think it'll be a much needed transit option, hopefully take some cars off the road in the long run, etc. It was a hassle driving from my house to Panorama Hills for summer school, I was happy to see the station there so my brother won't suffer the same peril.
@paula9661
@paula9661 7 жыл бұрын
side by side with barricades is ok, but then there are the intersections at the lightpost. I am not sure if they can do much in the middle of the city where is heavy built but at the ends of the city there is plenty of land to have the trains go away from the cars. anyways this thing has been approved already. I just hope i am wrong. and I also hope if they built the winter shelters out of glass, they give then rotating doors so the cold doesn't come in each time someone opens the door. Those glass shelters suck.
