This is the second review of this particular knife/company that expresses product disapointment. I bought an American made Dexter Russel Green River Dadely blank with separate wood pieces to make and shape my own scales. The carbon steel blade is excellent and it came razor sharp. You can also buy the Dadely with scales but they're very unattractive and a bit short for my hands. The Dadely is almost identical to the Sheffield Deck Knife. Give it a try - you won't be disappointed.

Here in the USA, I have found that Green River knives made by Dexter-Russell are of higher quality than the one which you reviewed. Also, here in the USA that "Deck Knife," as you called it, is better known as a Dadley Knife with a spear point, full-tange blade, excellently mounted; it has excellent steel; and an almost razor-sharp edge eveny ground., straiught from the factory. Perhaps you were unfortunate enough to get a "lemon." Thanks for your honesty & objectivity in reviewing the knife that you featured! The Dexter-Russell Green River knives in this country are evidently much less expensive than across the Atlantic. Blessings upon you & yours, sir!

Green river knives have some old old designs. The grooves on the back r for scaling fish. Its called a didley knifes. A kind of all purpose belt knife. Sharp blade, symmetrical tip for drilling holes, thin blade for easy sharpening and just enough belly to skin, but not too much belly too specialize in anything

Sucks that a knife from such a classic company would come so crappy. I bought a green river from Russell company that was more decent. Still come with lackluster fit n finish but that’s to be expected from paying 20 US dollars. I bought an upgraded oval style wooden handle and it’s become my favorite knife ever. I’ve gutted catfish, rabbits, I use it in the kitchen everyday. It’s my favorite knife ever.

Thanks for the review. The back is not meant to be a saw but is jumping, a decoration mainly. The old Green River knives from 150 years ago sometimes had jumping on the back like that and Sheffield cutlery companies often copied the original GR knives for sales in the states as they were popular with Western settlers in the US.

Something about the design reminds me of a kitchen knife which would make the asymmetrical grinds make sense since Japanese chefs knives and some other types of knives have an asymmetrical grind intentionally put on them because it's supposed to make it easier to make a more accurate cut. Probably just a coincidence considering the finish and the sharpening steel.

Dave. Any way good to see you posting video's again it's been some time since weave heard from you stay safe out there . You'd be much better off getting the original American made Russell green river Dadley that this is essentially a copy of, though you won't get a sheath. I can get it razor sharp, and it has served me well for many years. The jimping on the back served as a tactile reference point so that you would know that you were holding the knife properly because it has such a symmetrical blade. It's sad they don't put much care into them anymore.

Knife buyers today have unrealistic expectations for what they are buying. They buy a 50 pound blade and critique it the same way they would a 600 pound custom knife. A mass produced knife will always be rough around the edges. Also, when I buy a mass produced knife, I expect to have to sharpen it to my liking. The only time I depend on the seller to send me a sharpened knife is if I am forking out serious dough for a one off from a custom knife maker.

Not exactly: it depends on the purpose/intent, and the situation. You can only carry in public places if sheathed, and not on display ie in a bag. I regularly carried two leathermans in my work as an engineer. But outside of work they were sheathed, and in a locked tool bag. The information available is confusing, if you have a legitimate reason, unfortunately, it takes a criminal court to decide if it's a legitimate reason, not you! I believe the Police are a bit more experienced, than when the laws were introduced, and I'd trust more sympathetic to reasonable answers. However, I did everything conceivably possible to demonstrate my lawful intent, prevent forfeiture of nearly £300 quids worth of multitools. PS they're illegal because they are lock blades, and designed to be opened with one hand. Not actually proscribed weapons, a list is available.
