A luxury accommodation. It takes me back to the 1940s in London UK, from when I was a boy. We had no electricity in those days. I used to buy 'day old chicks' from the pet shop. Keep them in a box, with a rubber hot water bottle wrapped in cloth to keep them warm. Eventually we got electricity and I hung a bulb over the box. All very hit and miss and some didn't survive. The ones that did supplemented our food rations. Keep the videos coming!!

Real nice job on the Chick box! Also Like that heating pad that is much better than a heat lamp!
@JWimpy3 жыл бұрын
Nice build. But if it were me I would put the heated pad down against the end. Chicks like to huddle together in a corner when they get cold. And it frees up room around the water fountain when they are huddled together. Also, put a layer of sawdust over the mat so it will clean up easier.

It's a great solution. They only have to be in there for 6 weeks and, as you said, on nice days they can go outside to enjoy some fresh air. They looked like happy little chicks running around their new digs. Angela, I have to say, you're pretty handy with that tool. I think the result looks awesome. Now, I'm wondering .....if I get one of those tools maybe I can finish a few small projects around here too? :)

Love the brooder, it's perfect for a few chicks. I can assure you that if you bought Golden Comet pullets, and they actually shipped or marked them correctly as Golden Comet pullets, that is what you have. They are a sex-linked bird, meaning the females are a different color at hatching than the males. Yours are all feathering out like pullets.

I watch a Canadian artist named Joshua Alexander, him and his wife have chickens too. They just got 4 chicks to add to their flock. They were supposed to be girls, but they think at least 2 are boys. They have several different breeds so they didn't know what they were supposed to look like as babies and "teenagers".

@sam-and-angela3 жыл бұрын
Sam hasn't been in his workshop to make any sawdust in about two months. EEK! Perks of a home reno! LOL But otherwise it would probably be too fine of a dust for the chicks, but more so for the surrounding area -- they'd dust everything up! :)

Put the chicks under the hens at night.
@FarmFreshIB11 ай бұрын
Adding chick under a bloody is most successful if you put the chicks in after the hen has gone to sleep for the night. Typically they wake up in the morning ready to be a mom. It is also most successful if the bloody is alone. Even chicks hatched naturally often struggle if there are multiple mommas.

We always stuck chicks under the broody hens at NIGHT! Sneak them under there.
