Another review of a quality (but often overlooked item of bushcraft gear). The review is not another "straight out the box" opinion of how it is going to perform, but instead, an honest review based on twelve years use in a bushcraft environment.

You can’t go wrong with an Opinel, I bought my first one in 1978 and still use them to this day. Great video as always mate!

I never understood the point of spending hundreds on a single knife like some people do when you could buy a tonne of Opinels or Moras instead.

Never seen someone strike a ferro rod like that, holding the striker (knife in this case) in place and running the rod over it. Makes so much more sense, since it concentrates the sparks where you need them. I'll be using mine like that from now on!
@grazianism
@grazianism 2 жыл бұрын
Yes, it's very effective because you can throw sparks very close to the flammable materials in a very accurate and concentrated way. I use the same method but with my victorinox's saw blade and I'm very happy with the results.

Give them a try, Lonnie, they really are nice and portable knives. When I was at Boy scout we used them a lot. As you can see this one has a drop point blade and slightly curved handle, while the other models are straighter, with a slightly clipped point. Just fyi 😉

I was bought the Opinel pruning saw as a Father’s Day present by my wife in 2014,. Which is fantastic, I watched this video yesterday and as of today (round my neck on a piece of leather) got a no8 inox as a neck knife from Heinnie Haynes (no affiliation) for £9:95 Brilliant 👍🏻

My Opinel is 30 this year, it looks it too but is still going strong. The only folding knife worthy, an edge that can be razor sharp and stay that way too, with it's locking mechanism being by far the safest for ferro rod use.

Looks like a pretty solid knife for outdoor tasks. I have a traditional No. 8 carbon steel. Good knife, too. Scary sharp, but I do not like the way the tip curves. The more pointy tip of the garden knife is interesting.

I really like opinels for food prep, not really thick blade and good cutting performance. Never tried carving with them though, always used them just for food and whittling. I really appreciate your reviews, please keep them coming 👍🙂

I briefly flirted with getting one to try but have discovered they only come in stainless steel and I'm a long time fan of carbon steel, so I'll stick with my faithful no 8, which is one of my favourite possessions, it's close to perfect! Though having eventually found our missing carbon steel paring knife in the compost heap, all rusty and in much need of tlc earlier this evening I did think of how stainless steel would not have minded. Equally I don't feel sufficiently strongly about any stainless steel knife that I will delve into the compost heap for it...

Alas, if you are in the UK any opinel folding knife is illegal to carry: it locks. You need a cast iron reason for carrying it.
@OttosTheName

@@OttosTheName From what I remember the blades don't feel very secure when the ring is off. I just thought I'd point out that they are not legal. Being a middle aged white women who doesn't live in an inner city I feel completely fine carrying my knife around with me. I have on occasion gone into Tesco on my way home from work only to realise on getting home that I have 4 Opinels in my pocket, and one round my neck- hard to justify that....

No, unfortunately, the locking ring makes them a "lock knife". That said, neither is a leatherman or Mora knife. I think if common sense is applied when using/carrying you won't go far wrong.
