I actually worked on this video on the very small lighting crew. I think there were 2-3 of us. So many years ago. We shot it in their little apartment which was more like a basement under a house in Oakland. And they played Woodstock the same year. There was no way at the time to know how huge they would become. Big fan ever since that day!

One thing I’ve always appreciated about this video is the detail of Billie’s microphone. The crushed screen and ring of tape, sometimes generations of tape rings, usually to cover the hole left from removal of a thumb switch or to make fit in a stressed mic stand… the fleeting apprehension of putting my mouth against another one night after night, across varied pools of bacteria is one of the grossest things I feel nostalgia for. Lovely stuff.

Steve mate, i was looking through the comments looking for one that struck a chord, and its you. Im going to be 63 soon and its very likely weve travelled similar paths. I just have this thing with this song just like you. This is the first ever song i heard of Green Day. I cant say im a big fan, cause i really only know their hits, but this song has something else, it has a really powerful, driving pull to it when that fast part kicks in. Its superbly crafted and its still my fave of theirs. I got here by accident, i experienced Punk as it happened in 76 at only 16 and the next 6yrs produced brilliant music and bands and some of the wildest partying days ever for me. The late 70s was experimental, and boy did we experiment! I only got here because i was listening to Rough Boy from ZZ Top, its my fave of theirs, and im not a huge fan of theirs really, its just a superb song with great guitars, and i feel Rough Boy is what sums up that life and maybe we always stay that way. So it brought me to 100 best metal songs its called i think. I was looking at them all, and a lot were "hits" and then Change by The Deftones was there, so i do like that and played it and then i saw this and said "Yes! Havent heard this in ages" Yep, im just like you, we may be 62, but i have done some serious hard rockin and have lived to tell the tale of life in the fast lane. It nearly took me, but i made it through. Thanks for inspiring me mate.

I am a huge fan of what some call "authentic punk" and I've always said Green Day is truly real punk. @herranton Жыл бұрын
@@kazooplayer3People said they sold out when they left Lookout and signed with Warner. That was a big deal at the time. They were leaving a label that basically help build the 90s punk scene. It was almost like they were telling everyone that they were now too good for them. I get it. I don't know if I agree with it, but I get it. Green Day had bigger goals than just being a punk band. They wanted to be the best band of any kind. And Lookout wasn't going to be able to get them there so they had to cut ties. But in doing so, they hurt a lot of feelings. However, they did have support. Screeching weasel wrote _I wrote Holden Coulfield_ as a sign of support for them and Dirnt played bass on the song. Some people got it. Some felt abandoned. It's all been patched up though. I think as people have grown older and more mature, they understand the choices Green Day made and why they made them. The hard feelings are mostly gone. But it didn't just come out of nowhere. They were part of a community. And then they chose to leave that community for something bigger. You're gunna take some heat for that. Edit: but if they hadn't left Lookout, I doubt very much we would have seen the same level of pop/punk bands in the late 90s. Sum41, Good Charlotte, Simple Plan, Fountains of Wayne, even Blink and fallout boy probably wouldn't have been a thing without Dookie getting a major label release. Green Day primed the populace for the more traditional punk sound. Offspring was around, but they were more southern California sounding pop punk. They were damn near a different genre completely. They've always sorta been punk adjacent and didn't bring punk mainstream like greenday did even if they had success as a band. Kinda like how Metallica's success hasn't brought metal mainstream. Greenday managed to bring a _whole genre_ into the billboard top 40. Edit 2: Thanks for coming to my Ted talk. Lol.

LOL...they didn't look however they wanted really, they just didn't think about it too much and didn't care. Now the current young generation is so self absorbed, and obsessed with their social media, they have to treat everything like a TREND. We were completely against trends in those days, and hated the media trying to cram things down our throats, which is why Green day is wearing clothes that honestly looked plain back then... It was the only way to get to us! Nobody tried too hard to be anything in particular, and I really miss that. Now everything is a trend, even the stuff me and my dumb friends wore back in 1994 simply because it was cheap and our parents would buy it for us. I feel sorry for kids nowadays, they are really clueless and have nothing solid to call their own anymore. A generation of FOLLOWERS... Pity.

I'm in the UK and in the 90s this track reminded me of why I was a punk in the first place; it gave me a second wind that's still with me to this day and I'm 60. You can temporarily remove the boy from the punk but you can never completely remove the punk from the boy.

***** Grungy in the sense, it starts out slow and then builds up in the chorus. Of course, the chord progression is that of punk.
@godwarrior34038 жыл бұрын
Jay punk can absolutely be grungy. Nirvana. And if you don't consider Nirvana punk, you have no room to consider Green Day punk either. Though I hate the whole "Grunge" thing. It's just a label not a sound. Though if by grunge it is meant sludgy distortion, Eb tuning, and bi polar song structure, green day could definitely be considered similar.

Why this song/band means so much to me: I've had epilepsy since I was a kid (about 20 years now). Seizure drugs are notorious for having so many difficult side effects, such as depression, lethargy, anything to do with your normal brain function, but it comes down to dealing with the lesser of the evils. When I began taking these drugs, my entire persona changed. I stopped sports, became withdrawn and antisocial, stopped eating healthy. I was a zombie, soulless, much like how JK Rowling describes her depression through the dementors. But after some years, my doctor took me off the medicine to see if I'd outgrown the seizures. The first moment I felt a reawakening: it was in the car on the way to school. The radio was playing like always, but I never actually absorbed what I heard. Then I heard this baseline, it woke me. I felt so strange, I felt alive. My seizures came back, and I had to go back on the medicine. But sometimes, I can still recapture that feeling, that awakening, when I put on Green Day. Love you guys, always.
