Well done guys. We were lucky in Herefordshire and found a couple of trustworthy gas engineers for our vans but I can imagine a huge weight has been lifted for you. 🎉

Dare I ask, did we get a fair price? 😂 There really is only a few out there with the rental gas certificate so it does make you feel stuck in a corner when you’re not sure what’s really going on. So glad you found some good ones near you and yes, so glad it’s over and done with 😆

What a pain that chap didn't show up, how unprofessional. Gas is the one thing I need to sort out and I thought I knew what I needed to do, which closely follows what Barry said before. I've currently got cyclinder and regulator in a gas locker like yours, but with tube to cooker, and I thought I had to do pipe between locker and cooker.. But if some gas tube is allowed between regulator and applicance then I don't need to do anything.

BTW if you're Telford way have you tried Coco's Wild Camp for testing your conversion? My latest video features it a fair bit.

In all honesty I couldn’t really give advice, we based our installation off the regulations we read online plus 2 gas engineers and 1 professional motorhome engineers advice. We got sign off from an engineer who works on a handful of Quirky Camper rentals so I believe what we have done is correct. But it seems that even professional gas engineers give different advice. I have to say though, it is much more strict because this will be a rental van. If it’s for you, there is no requirement off DVLA or your insurance on how the gas should be fitted, so technically you can do what you want. Of course, it’s best to fit everything as correctly as you can but if it’s just one appliance, it will be easy to manage the flexi hose vs if you have a complex gas system. I hope all this helps and hopefully you don’t need to do anything 🤗. Thank you for the tip on coco’s too. We have been recommended it by our friend Neil (bigblue iveco) too so I think it’s a must visit now 🙌🏼

You mentioned people will mainly use it around North Wales. I found free camping a nightmare there as very few places where it is allowed, especially with a nice view. I gave up in the end and did the NC500 round Scotland.
@nicroams Жыл бұрын
Aw no, I have done North Wales quite a few times and not had any more issues than the rest of Wales/ England. I have to admit though, Anglesey is pretty terrible but there are a handful of spots. Either way, I’ll be sharing all my park ups with the renters so they don’t need to find them themselves 🤗. NC500 is incredible though isn’t it! If only the rest of the UK was as camper friendly 🙌🏼
@exploringavenues2269 Жыл бұрын
@@nicroams I found South Wales was better. More open so easier to find a place with views that I was allowed to park. With North Wales the car parks seemed to be surrounded by trees and slightly away from the beach so no view. You definitely have more knowledge of it than me anyway. Hope the renting out goes well 😀

To comply with British standards the regulator has to be within the gas iocker. All pipe work external to the gas locker to the appliance has to be rigid copper or steel. Each appliance has to have a local isolation valve. Rubber tube is not allowed as this could melt in a fire and allow gas to escape. I would strongly advise you to check this out.
@BarryDavey-h2i Жыл бұрын
Further to the above I would point out that I was a gas engineer for 38 years until I retired.
@nicroams Жыл бұрын
Hi Barry, thank you for this. We have gone over our gas set up with multiple gas engineers who have the certificate for rental campervans. We have also read through the rental regulations ourselves. Because we only have one gas appliance and it’s in such close proximity, flexi hose is allowed but will of course need changing every few years. Regarding the regulator being in the locker, this isn’t something anyone has mentioned or we have come across. Any chance you have a website link / know the regulation etc so I can look in to this 🤗 I do want to note, the gas engineer who signed off our system has done many campervans for Quirky Campers so I have no reason to doubt what he is doing is wrong but I also like to understand things for myself as the customers safety comes first. Thank you again 🤗

@@nicroams Hi Nic I'm not trying to rain on your parade, I'm mearly stating the regulations as they stand. I have converted a van myself and watched many KZbin videos and VERY few comply with regulations. I've seen new vans at shows that don't comply!. Any way I wish you all the best and look forward to your summer adventures, being a long time subscriber to your channel. Regards Barry

@@BarryDavey-h2i not raining on it at all, always appreciate the sound advice given by others on here 🤗. I was just hoping to know which regulation you were referring to so I can look in to it. Whilst doing our research, there were lots of blogs, and engineers giving different advice so in the end we decided to only listen to the gas safe website and the engineer who was going to provide us the certificate as that’s who we need to get sign off 😄. Anyway, all I can do is trust in their work and hope all is safe as it’s kind of out of my control at this point

In Spain, the entire construction process must be approved. Everything from windows and roof hatches...all in all a 20 page list of weight and everything else that is needed for the ITV (car inspection) to approve it. If it is a gas and or solar cell installation, it must also be approved by an expert prior to approval. In addition, such vans that are over 10 years old must be approved every 6 months...

Wow that is crazy and maybe a tad excessive but also appreciate the safety of the customers. We shall count ourselves lucky 🍀. I imagine it won’t be long until the regulations get tighter here too though

The drop vent goes through the floor so holds it in place. The screws we used to hold the strap fixtures in on the gas locker wall went through in to the can wall too 🤗

I’ve just watched more of this video, that has setup is illegal, you cannot have a flexible house from the regulator to The appliances, the gas locker has to be sealed via a bulkhead connection and copper to the appliances. I’m concerned.
@nicroams Жыл бұрын
Hey, it’s not illegal, it has been discussed with multiple gas engineers and signed off by one, we even have the certificate 😊. No copper pipe is needed due to there only being one appliance that’s within a short distance of the gas locker. Thanks for tuning in to our other videos 🙌🏼

Actually for the UK now with costs as they are, what you paid for someone with a proper business in an industrial estate, the price was good, pretty average, seemed like a typical builder banter type, with his cheeky chappy type, if your nice it's cheaper lol 😆

Outside of the labour charge this is blatant profiteering, I rent property and pay around £85 for a full gas safety on a house!!!!! I will be suggesting van certification tas a sideline o the gas contractors I use, a few more providers should stop this kind of behaviour... Still, youll get it back in a couple of days renting
@nicroams Жыл бұрын
It’s quite extortionate. However each has engineer charges a different amount. The certificate is around £150 but some include the labour in that cost and others add it on top. I couldn’t even say we drew the short straw as the other engineer didn’t even show up 😂

the chap i have a number for does or did work for a company but also does his own private work and i had his number about 3 yrs ago when i fitted gas to my van but in the end as i was not renting it out did not need to get it certified. from viewing videos on you tube and the various literature on what was needed along with his advice bought the correct fittings along with the gas test solution and had no problems. the only thing i had missed was a small drop out vent in the floor under the hob in case there was a gas leak from the hob which he pointed out to me and gave me a vent free of charge to do the job.

Induction will need bigger inverter and bigger batteries, two of the most expensive parts of any build. They use a lot of power so unless you're plugged in or somewhere super sunny you'll always be watching your battery percentage. Not ideal when people are renting for a short period and won't be keeping an eye on these things.
@teslatube8018 Жыл бұрын
Induction Hobs are like a 4 - 7 KWs, to run that on solar pannels you'd need 48 120kw solar pannels producing there maximum output, not idea for small builds
