Two U-M researchers turn useless waste from rice processing into the high-purity silica compounds that are used in everything from toothpaste to tires. The technique could eliminate millions of tons of CO2 emissions every year, and it’s 90 percent less expensive than the
current method.
Richard Laine is a professor of Materials Science and Engineering at the University of Michigan. His research interests include the synthesis and processing of inorganic and organometallic hybrid polymers and nano-oxide powders.

Rice Husks were used in Sri Lanka to make and export glass beads to the rest of the world in 300BC. The word in singhalese for rice Husks is vee. Hence the singhalese name for glass is vithuru or in vitro (Latin).

The amount of carbon dioxide produced from the silicon making process is negligible and insignificant. More carbon dioxide is evaporated from dry ice than produced in the silicon making process. Not to mention the single biggest producer of carbon dioxide is mother nature anyway.
