ok so as a goth that was drawn to sharon because of her style of drag there's a little something i want to add: there's an unfortunate history of many goth icons saying slurs and using hate symbols because they think it's ground breaking and edgy (siouxsie) or just outright being a straight up white supremacist (peter steele). i think a lot of older goth's (especially white men) have a difficult time dealing with the implications of this because they idealize these people and want to follow in their footsteps, but lack the empathy and critical thinking needed to understand why this is wrong.

I learned first hand just how insanely much they edit the queens when I met Daya Betty at a meet and greet. I had this preconceived idea that she was going to be unenjoyable because of the way they edited her on her season. I was the least excited to meet her out of all of the girls there and I left wanting to see her again the most. She was the sweetest queen out of every other one in that room trying to make me feel better cause I was starstruck asf (i have really bad anxiety including social anxiety) so I didn’t even know what to say and she instantly jumped in to talk to me and no other queen did that. She told me she loved my nails and I told her I had made them myself and she was so impressed and just feeling seen by her was so sweet and made my whole night. They will truly edit you into just a character in their plot, they do not care who you actually are.
@Itsboofysummers2 жыл бұрын
I heard this about her! She’s extremely sweet and got a bad edit on DR
@heymistercarter. Жыл бұрын
It's interesting how that season had a storyline where there was a rivalry between Daya and Jasmine Kennedie, and that Daya was shown as the villain of the two. There's a pre-season video where they talk about season superlatives, like who's the sweetheart, who's the diva, and so on. When they get to who the drama of the season is, just about everyone says Jasmine, yet NO one says Daya. So it goes to show Daya was likely a very different person on set, and that there's probably an edit somewhere that portrays Jasmine as much worse than the victim edit she got on the show. And you can tell how much the edit upset Daya during the reunion episode.

Daya definitely got the raw end of the deal with that edit, but peraonally I don't even realize she was supposed to be a "villain" while watching the season. She was one of my favorite queens of the season and I could see her sincerity. I felt like she didn't say anything that out of line, especially with the understanding she's in a stressful, competitive situation. Maybe she didn't word it as nicely as she could have, but I could definitely understand the feeling that you're doing all you can and delivering but feeling stuck, while two others you're competing with are doing more poorly than others at a variety of things, but the thing they excel at happens to be the thing that saves you. Queens have said far worse to each other over the years.

Exactly. It's such a simple concept that Sharon and others like him don't seem to grasp. This season was my intro to drag, not just drag race, but drag. As a weirdo alt kid who was coming to terms with my own identity, I really loved Sharon and quickly adopted her as "my" queen. I was so validated in watching someone make polished looks that were also dark and unsettling. I genuinely admired her and cheered her on. Some naive part of me believed that racism and bigotry had no part in drag culture, and just as quickly as Sharon helped expose me to the queer community, she also showed me the dark parts of it too. I truly never saw it coming, and it's really sad that Drag Race would use the naivety of their audience to push someone like Sharon. I know I'm not alone in this experience and I know many have distanced themselves from this community because of the heartbreak they felt by being let down by their fave. She should have never been platformed.

I find the whole “using swastikas as part of an edgy look” thing so frustrating. It dates back to the 1970s when early Vivienne Westwood was dressing the Sex Pistols in swastikas for the exact same reason - for shock factor. Fast forward to two years later and the entire UK punk scene was flooded with genuine neo-nazis because the swastika tee had been so trendified that it created a safer space for them to express their bigotry. Vivienne Westwood, despite being very left-wing and an activist, still says she doesn’t regret using the symbol. The widespread use of such recognisable and loaded imagery is always going to be harmful, no matter whether the intent behind it is simply irony. And it begs the question too - is shock factor really useful, interesting or intellectual if it’s only punching down? I’d say it’s just lazy and tired.

I was so mad when I saw this. I’m an Israeli Jew, and our Holocaust Memorial Day was only a few weeks ago. My family and I dug into old records and YadVashem witness records to find out what happened to my father’s father side of the family, since it was the only side we didnt know. My great grandfather lost both of his sisters. One was murdered in Auschweitz when she was 20, the other was murdered when she was 17- we don’t know where or how. His parents were put on a train to fuck knows where and were murdered in a mass shooting immediately as they got off. My great grandfather’s only surviving relative was his brother (and they never spoke again after the Holocaust). My great grandmother lost her older sister in Auschweitz- she was around 22. Her first husband died in the Shanghai ghetto along with her first child. We couldn’t find the child’s name. Her father was sent to Buchenwald and survived there for FOUR YEARS in his 60s. If you know anything about Buchenwald, NO ONE survives for that long. His witness paper said he was killed by being gassed in Theresienstadt, but there were no gas chambers in that ghetto, so we don’t know how he died. My great grandmother’s only surviving relative was her mother. Not even her son or first husband made it out. That’s only my grandfather’s family. It continues on and on and on and on and it gets so much worse and this shit is not funny. I almost threw up when I saw the swastika. I would go up to these fuckers and I’d shove a copy of all of the records confirming my family’s murders up their ass so far it would come out of their mouths but that would be a disgrace to Yitschak A., Fanny, (Unkown) Podbielski, Siegfried, Lisolette, Ruth, Yitzchak F., and Yulia. Because if they feel safe then next time they'll bring their friends, and they'll bring their friends, and next thing you know you're running a neo Nazi bar. It's a good example of how tolerating intolerance is a slippery slope, and you need to make sure that sort of person knows they aren't welcome or supported. Of course, there are absolutely times when a person can't confront someone without putting themselves at risk (like a trans person confronting a violent transphobe, for example) and it's understandable that sometimes survival is more important than immediately speaking out when you don't have the privilege to do so safely. But whenever possible you really gotta nip that shit in the bud. There are still neo Nazis contaminating the punk scene, because they werent kicked out fast or hard enough. Anyone who owns black doc martins still needs to learn what different lace colors represent in order to avoid unintentionally seeming to support awful things. Screw nazis and the alt right, and screw what they're trying to do in the USA again with pushing for more fascism, suppressing "critical race theory" history lessons, fighting for and in some cases succeeding to get drag bans and anti trans laws passed, etc. Trans/queer and disabled people were some of the first to be targeted in Germany, along with Jewish and Romani people. I don't understand how people can't see the pattern repeating.

What drives me crazy is that the goal of the Georgia Voice interview was to sit down and chat with her in order to determine if she was willing to genuinely apologize and commit to changing her behavior. She could have chosen to actually rehab her image in that moment and regain the respect of folks by saying, 'You're right, the social commentary I was trying to make ended up hurting marginalized groups.' Yet she used the moment to whine about how the glamorous drag queens didn't want her in their spaces because she did alternative drag, completely missing the point. Then when the interviewers left, Sharon claimed they were 'attacking' her and 'barking' at her and then weaponized her white tears to attempt to seem like the victim. Just more racism. I was rooting for her on S4 and unfortunately had bought some merch from her during that time because I didn't know about her use of slurs or swastikas. I absolutely could not support her anymore and threw away her merch after I learned. I wanted to go see a Victoria Black show for my anniversary when I was in Orlando on Halloween just last year -- until I saw that Sharon Needles would be performing. I actively chose not to go so I wouldn't be supporting her.

i'm originally from pittsburgh, and 90% of my family still is there. years ago my uncle in law was (and as far as i know still is despite trying to get out) very deep rooted in the gay clubbing scene/drag scene of pittsburgh. he was friends with sharon needles before she was on drag race and it was no secret that they all abused drugs together. well, my uncle in law became completely & hopelessly addicted to party drugs and alcohol. after years he hit rock bottom, lost his job, house, etc. and my family pitched up to send him to rehab. he got out and was doing good, back on his feet with a good job and place to live again, this was during the time sharon's season was being filmed. after eventually returning to pittsburgh she invited a bunch of that old partying friend group my uncle was part of back out. my uncle was extremely hesitant and said he couldn't because he had just gotten clean and didn't want to be around that temptation. he assured him there would be no drugs present, obviously didn't promise no alcohol because duh it's a party. but alcohol was actually something he'd found he can be around without being tempted, his biggest vice was drugs. so after being promised up & down there wouldn't be any illicit substances present he ended up going to catch back up with who he thought was a friend. that is no friend. once my uncle had been there awhile with other friends from the circle, completely fine just drinking his pop, sharon showed up and lured him into a private area with a story of really needing to talk to him about something that he was uncomfortable discussing in the open. when they got back there wouldn't you know he pulled out a baggie and not only dangled it asking to partake, _knowing full well_ he just got his life back together and was clean, but then after he used a tremendous amount of willpower to look his vice in the face & say no, he actually *put it in his hands* like ??? who tf does that to a "friend"? if you've never dealt with addiction you have zero idea how freaking hard it is to say no just when you see your DOC but to have it in your hands?? it's nearly impossible. not fully impossible, but nearly & i don't want to hear anyone's opinion on that if they've never faced addiction themselves. needless to say he relapsed, hard. and guess who wasn't around or trying to hang out anymore once my uncle was back in full blown addict mode by his hands? ohhhhh that's right, the "friend" that literally just hung out to sabotage him just so he could feel better about doing it. i don't understand the evilness of some people, idek if i would call him or anyone that does something like that a person at all - maybe a demon disguised in a human meat suit is more accurate.

I remember a few years ago I heard someone mention the 'Sharon Needles controversy' so I went looking to find out what it was- I saw none of this. The only thing I remember seeing when I googled it was that she'd had a fight with Jeffree Star about lipsticks, and given that I don't think JS is a particularly good human either I didn't think much of it. I wonder why this information wasn't higher in the search results

This is an issue that affects not only Sharon himself, but also the drag scene as a whole. This kind of story is what far right activists use as an example to generalize all drag performers as dangerous predators. Sharon Needles should never be allowed to have a platform again and should have never even been allowed to win Drag Race in the first place.

@@DOCDOCFLAMINGOSNot true. Sharon has been blacklisted from basically every club within the Pittsburgh area. My late uncle was a drag queen and so I wanted found the show so comforting, and Sharon Needles was my comfort queen of that season bc she never tried to “fit the mold” and stood up for herself(when now rewatching she deserved having Phi Phi constantly calling her out, who knows what they DIDNT air) When I found out her true colors it was just like “oh…” I was so disappointed and disgusted 😒

I was a senior in high school when s4 came out, it was the first time I ever watched the show, I LOVED her - plus she's from my hometown, so I really rooted for her. When I learned about her behavior I was disgusted and I was done with her, and I'm pretty sure the majority of the Pittsburgh scene blacklisted her ass. I thought that was the case with EVERYONE?? I haven't even heard her name since then! Its really horrific that apparently everyone else just swept it under the rug. Her refusal to say anything definitive or apologize about anything is so unbelievable.

@m_milos2 жыл бұрын
televised trials shouldn't be a thing. court cases shouldn't be used as entertainment for the masses, they're a serious thing that happens between two parties, the judge and the jury. also, televised trials with non-sequestered juries where the juries are the one making the final decision can lead to biases being formed in juries' minds which can largely alter the final verdict. if sharon does go to court, it should be just between her and her accusers, because we know it would become a whole online drama show if it's accessible to everyone

I kind of get why she still has so many followers. People really just don’t care about the “everything is racist/transphobic” crowd.
