Great ideas! I found a ton of “fake” lego base plates at the dollar store, so they will work perfectly for raising buildings up.

Looking to start a city soon and already thinking how to raise the modulars to incorporate the new road system. Really enjoyed your informative video with the options available and swaying towards the MILS system if I’m honest. I’ve also looked at using 3mm cardboard under the modulars which would be a cheaper option 🤔
@GreenGuitarGuy3 жыл бұрын
Sorry I'm just getting to responding, but thank you for the comment! What option did you end up going with Simon? Cardboard is definitely the cheapest.
@simonmoss1013 жыл бұрын
Hi @GreenGuitarGuy, yes I’ve decided to MILS plate everything. After watching Bevins Bricks video on the new road plates, that swayed it for me. The main reason is the strength it gives and ease of switching things around whilst locking it together. The cost is more but then I don’t spend my money on anything else. I look forward to seeing your city’s developments.

Nice video. I have a question though. I’m planing on doing the third one. But I’m also wondering what the difference between the second and third methods. Also, if I am doing the third method, how will I connect the road plates to my modulars? I don’t like the idea of my road plates not being connected to my buildings.
@GreenGuitarGuy3 жыл бұрын
Hey Swang, good question. The third method with just setting buildings on freestanding baseplates, there would not really be a way to connect the modular building with the road as they are different heights. The roads are at 4 Lego units high while the buildings would be 5 Lego units high. This would be the same case for the mini-mils second option . The only way to avoid this would be to eliminate the baseplate for the modular buildings, or put the new roadplates on a baseplate as well so they're at the same height. Once they're at the same level you should be able to connect with plates. There may be other options out there, but I hope that helps.
@sweezy51493 жыл бұрын
@@GreenGuitarGuy I see. I’m looking more into the mills version of the roads. Also, is there a reliable way to buy retired lego sets? I’m trying to make a city myself but most of the modulars buildings are retires :(
@GreenGuitarGuy3 жыл бұрын
You can watch EBay and FB marketplace for deals, they are out there, but be aware of knockoffs, as there are quite a few Lepin sets out there that look just like Lego. Bricklink.com is a good place, it's only Lego so you don't have to worry about knock offs and sometimes you have options, like some sets might be missing parts or box and so you can get them cheaper. Just make sure you're finding a seller that ships to you and that shipping is not rediculusly high. The retired sets usually go for 2-4 times their original price FYI
@GreenGuitarGuy3 жыл бұрын
@@sweezy5149 Also, as I mentioned above about Bricklink, there is an option to part out any set... You can try that option and see if you can source the parts cheaper than buying a set. There are a few sets that have a couple rare bricks that you could change out for something cheaper, like Green Grocer has a sand green 1x2 modified brick that is really expensive, but if you change it out for a sand green 1x2 modified masonary brick it could save a lot of money and still look just as nice (or better) than the original. Hope that helps

@@GreenGuitarGuy sorry I couldn’t respond to you in time. Anyways, I have another question. How can I integrate the mills road with my city. Is there a way I can make my modulars a “mills” modular if you get what I mean?
@andrewtaylor9403 жыл бұрын
Here's an even cheaper, if slightly less purist approach. But honestly since when has the need for purity ever extended down to the table and benchwork. Get yourself a 4'x8' sheet of 1/8" Masonite Hardboard. Have the guy at Home depot or lows cut it into 1'x4' strips. You now have pads for underneath your Modulars. Total Cost ~$8 US.

Super! Glad you di this video. I'm thinking the new base plates are just a gimmick (IMO) but you've come up with some really good choices. I use your last choice on half base plates (16*32) with tiles. The lanes are 7 studs wide which may seem a little narrow but roads are not my top priority in my city. Thanks for sharing and understanding that not everyone has a money tree growing in the backyard (LOL).
@GreenGuitarGuy3 жыл бұрын
Thank you Samuel! I've had plans to go the tile route as well in my city, I think they look really nice and it gives us more room for buildings. I'm with you, roads are nice to have but not my priority. Thanks for such a great comment!

Great video as usual, but for me I still don't like these new road plates - the fact that multiple KZbinrs are making videos of 'How to" make these plates work, suggests that (for AFOLs anyway) they don't work in the first place! Like you say, them being smaller saves space, but I feel them being narrower makes the City look too claustrophopic - if you have buildings either side of the road, they're too narrow. Mostly, for me though, the thing I don't like is what I don't like about the Mils plates, it's how shiny they are... the new road plates look very patchwork too. Again, all my personal opinions - if people love these and start to use these in their cities, all the better - more proper road plates available for me : )
@GreenGuitarGuy3 жыл бұрын
Agreed, it does look very patchwork. Lego knows they can increase profits on a line by retiring it... they are probably selling more road baseplates now than they have been, with people stocking up. Thanks for the comment buddy!
@dazblue55153 жыл бұрын
@@GreenGuitarGuy Haha - yes very true, i'd better get a few!!! I think the road works ok with a city set-up like yours where the buildings are generally along one edge... but still I don't like the patchwork appearance - the other thing that I don't like, is a problem I have with the baseplates - the colour! They should have been dark stone grey, instead of mid - road tarmac is darker than pavement usually, and would have stood out better.
@carlaspinwall42472 жыл бұрын
Why don't people just slap the modular on top of two stackable 32x32 aftermarket base plates on top of the original lego base plate. Correct height and you can chose the colour of these plates. They're also cheap and will never be seen again.
