Excellent series! Both Martin Shaw's acting and the George Gently character are fantastic. I love the, gritty North Umbrian 60s setting. Very noir.

Im 70. I’ve watched all 8 seasons more than 10 times all way through. I cry every 8 th season finale. Even though I know it’s acting. It’s brilliantly acted with a brilliant script. Along with that said, I had an abusive father and so wished i had a father like the George Gently character. Only female in a family of six. I grieve the George Gently character. I’ve never grieved my father. Was relieved he died at 76.

greenheart45 your absolutely awesome. Thanks for all those great and rare Martin Shaw interviews! This is one of my favourites (although the interviewers are a bit... well "the Professionals was that late 60s or early 70s"?!?! And as they already mention "Life on Mars" they could have mentioned that Lee Inglyby starred in it, I think it was the 8th episode of series 1) 'cause it's great to see Martin Shaw and Lee Inglaby in an interview together.

I see this serie George Gently now in the Netherlands on bbc first and i am addicted i think. My opinion is that everything is ok about it. The time setting, the class struggle, the music, and the acting! I really feel irritation about the general behaviour from John Bacchus ( lol ) , but i do like that person too. I wonder how it continues 😉

Me too. 'The Hour' was a great show that should have been given the opportunity to build a loyal audience and come to a satisfactory conclusion, but the BBC axed it before they had the chance. I've since heard that the show's stars Romola Garai, Dominic West and Ben Whishaw were understandably very disappointed (as were it's many viewers) that the series wasn't coming back for a third run, so the BBC were definitely very shortsighted in axing it. Ahhh....well! At least I do still have both series of 'The Hour' on DVD to watch whenever I like.

I love this show. I watch it over and over again. I can do the dialog along with George and John. I love the humor they slip in and Lee is so great. I love watching him. You can see the devil in him but then his soft side comes out. My favorite though was when he was fishing and he wasn’t happy at all. I also loved when he was telling Phil Davis, another great actor, asking him if the boy he killed begged for his life and insinuated that Phil killed his own son. That was priceless acting on Lee’s part. I can not watch the last 2 episodes. I do not like the way it ended and it’s too upsetting for me, I love these two characters too much.

Martin Shaw is the best actor in any detective series (well, as good as Jeremy Brett as Sherlock). I've never seen Shaw on PBS and what a loss for us all. I write lettersto our local PBS, asking why they've never shown any Martin Shaw series - but no response. "Zen" would have been just as good, but they only ran it for oneseason, saying it was too expensive and difficult to film in Italy. Another loss.Americans seemed to think "Morse" was the greatest detective. Not so much.

It was a great show and still is one of the best. It's the screenplays. They're brilliant. Lee Ingleby constantly steals the show though, but Martin Shaw lets him - which is what makes them such a great on screen team. You believe they get along. This is a show that you can watch over again. I just wish Martin Shaw would get his front teeth fixed!!

I've noticed Lee Ingleby also has a Lennonesque type nose, though. No doubt with the right wig and make-up, he could probably look a lot like Lennon. I wonder if Lee has ever been approached to play him either on stage or screen?

The series is set in Northumberland during the 1960s when lots of people smoked, so the producers of the show had to be authentic, otherwise it would've come across as unrealistic. Anyway, the cigarettes that they use on it are herbal. What's more, just in case you happen to be wondering, I'm a lifelong non-smoker myself. I just don't seem to have the same puritanical views as you. That's all.
