In recent weeks, US President-elect Donald Trump has shown renewed interest in taking control of Greenland, a largely autonomous territory of Denmark in the Arctic and the world's largest island.
When asked if he would rule out using military or economic force in order to take over the island, as well as the Panama Canal, he responded: "No, I can't assure you on either of those two.
"But I can say this, we need them for economic security," he told reporters during a wide-ranging news conference at his Mar-a-Lago estate in Florida last week.
So, how do people living in Greenland feel about Trump’s plans?

There's an old joke that goes Just because America was late for two world wars doesn't mean it has to start the next one. That joke could be about to become a reality!

I was born educated and raised in the US. Worked abroad ,. Got job in England 2009 .Stayed,married..No regrets Nice home, great people and can afford to pay off step kids college debts. Looking at the US now,I cannot believe that the richest and most powerful country in the world has the worse Healthcare in the developed world. Solely because politicans are frightened of upsetting US Big Pharma. .Very scary . Dems and GOP can't even blame each other. Plus over 50% of Americans are living in poverty or pay check to paycheck while the very rich get richer and richer. And politicans keep borrowing more money to the extent that that America may not be able to pay its National debt and could be bankrupt.in 12 years with,at current increased borrowing rates, a National debt that costs nearly a trillionbucks a year to serviceJust because politicans of both parties are shit scared of re introducing a proper tax system which ,because of the influence big money has in US politics would be political suicide. At the moment wealthy Americans pay less than 5% of their income in taxes. . Somebody please tell me I have got it all wrong and that some day the political parties will get together and stop the destruction of a country I love

Let's not "both sides" this... one party chose to elect a convicted felon, one party invaded the Capitol on J6 and attempted to overturn an election, one party's judges overturned the founding principle that no man is above the Law, one party brought about Citizens United and sold American Democracy to the highest bidder, one party has decided to strip bodily autonomy from women. What was the Republican party is now a death cult enslaved to a liar, cheat, convicted fraud and convicted sexual abuser. There is no equivalent, there is only treachery so deep, so profound that with the election of Donald Trump in November 2024, America essentially committed suicide.

I'll try this again as the algo apparently decided my comment was too controversial... so here's the encoded version, spellings are on purpose.... only 1 party chose a felun, only 1 party laid si3g3 to the Capitol, only 1 party chose robes that would strip women of their bodily autonomy, only 1 gave tax breaks to the ultrawealthy and corps while generating $8 TRILLION in debt. Only one President has ever broken the peaceful transfer of power. These things are not equal.

US could start paying rent for the use of Pituffik Space Base, former Thule Air Base. US pays nothing other than taxes from the civil staff employed at the base. Greenland are free to choose their freedom and a close cooperation to other countries. A seperation from "colonial" Denmark will entail end of subsidize from Denmark and EU for more than 5.5 billion d. kr. p.a., which btw pays more than 25 % of the economy in Greenland. If Greenland should be a part of US as the 51. state, greenlanders will have to say goodbye to the nordic welfare model, which e.g. provides free health care and special treatments in Denmark such as cancer treatments in Denmark which would give trouble to USA if they want to copy that. Trump want to exploit Greenland underground, minerals ect, its very hard to do that and mining companies from US and other countries have tried that for years with a very limited outcome, and what ever mr. Trump thinks, he might not get what he wants. And yet Greenland and Denmark says "We are willing to further discussion about a close cooperation with USA". One might think that USA in the hands of mr. Trump is a troublemaker.

The oil would make Greenlanders like rich saudis and the slaves would become the masters. Denmark would be kicking rocks. They won't NEED Danish welfare anymore as gazillionaires with oil underneath their feet. The U.S. pays for Greenland's defense so it is not invaded as Demark is refusing to do so. Denmark sees Greenland as a welfare state, a burden anyone who thinks differently is deluding themselves. Denmark and Greenland have been together since 1380, when Norway entered a union with Denmark under the Danish crown, by which Greenland became part of the Danish-Norwegian union. After close to 500 Years the union split up in 1814, after the Napoleonic war, when Denmark was forced to entrust Norway to Sweden, whilst Greenland, Iceland and the Faroe Islands stayed with Denmark. Today Greenland is an integrated and autonomic part of the Kingdom of Denmark, and it’s NOT for sale. (Denmark also can’t sell Sweden, Germany, France and, for that matter, any other Country to the US) The only country You can buy today is The United States of America where money rules everything - ask Elon Musk - he knows which price he paid.

Maybe tell the full story of the coils? It wasn’t to keep the population down just for the sake of it. It was to allow Denmark to build a welfare system in Greenland at a sustainable pace. When Denmark first improved the health service in Greenland, infant mortality plummeted and left many teenage mothers with no way of of supporting their children. @ricardodcsilva I don't know. I feel like it would be nice to just get a clear answer so, we can just move on from this nonsense. I've noticed that the Americans online are really convinced that America is just so great that the Greenlanders will obviously choose to be part of them. The Europeans at the same time are so convinced that the Americans are just so terrible that the Greenlanders would never choose them over the Danes. Who in the eyes of the Europeans, are all too often seen as the the perfect nation that can do no wrong. Beyond a couple of interviews, with a few induviduals, and one fringe poll that doesn't seem terribly trustworthy. No one seems to have actually wondered what the Greenlanders themselves want. Like almost always they are left withoutut a voice, they are given no agency. Greenland is constantly treated like nothing more than a price to be taken for the sake of other countries' empire building. The Norwegians, The Danes, the Canadians, the Anericans, and well even EU supporters recently. All regularity express how Greenland should be part of their country/union, because they are so awesome that obviously the Greenlanders would want that. I will say this, As an Icelander I understand better than most just how arrogant Danes can be when discussing their colonial past, they almost universally refuse to recognize that their empire was a cruel one for most of it's history, just like any other empire in history. and I really sympathize with the Greenlanders when they state that they are just fed up with Denmark and want some change, no matter how crazy it may be. That is exactly what Iceland was in the 40's. I don't think the Greenlanders would ultimately choose to take their sovrengty, only to hand it over to the Americans, but I sure as hell think they should have a say in the matter.

The Americans were incredibly racist and ordered any white soldier caught fighting alongside the native Americans to be treated the same way. Ok. Here's an interesting few questions. If its ok that China takes over Taiwan (because the countries almost unilaterally in the UN have said so), then arent they literally sending a message to all countries for this sort of thing? Alot of the world also thinks its ok for Russia to take over Ukraine? Again, its kinda of odd people dont see the parallels. If you let one thing happen, and nothing really happens from the world community, then whats to stop others? The parallels of Austria in 1936.. are kinda nuts. With regards to both US+Greenland and China + Tibet, HK, Taiwan, Mongolia, Bhutan etc. Surprised people seem ok with all this from the Chinese, but when the US says one thing.. oh no. Wow, talk about weird double standards. You then add in the fact there _are_ disgruntled Greenlanders who dont like being under the Denmark flag (imho they should be able to have their own) then there is some question to why isnt Greenland a sovereign state anyway? (possibly population and state structures maybe). Then you ask, well why is Denmark managing it? Surely even Canada is a better proposition purely from a supply, and management perspective. While Trump is an idiot, it does raise alot of other questions.

Historical and economic facts about🇬🇱 and 🇩🇰 History Denmark has historically been arrogant and awful, like any other colonial power, been guilty in some atrocities in the 1900-1970’s - Force removing children - Religious prosecution - Trying to erase the Greenland way of life - Often when coming to Denmark, they are met with racism As a historian, I am aware of historical facts. The current Danish prime minister actually gave an official apology, as one of her first official acts (long overdue). Greenland can at any time succeeded from Denmark, but as in any democracy, it would need to be approved by the Parliament and put to the vote by the Greenland population. In any state there’s a yearning to be independent, but in every state there is also politicians yearning for power. Fact is that there has never been a real movement or even the slightest majority that want to succeed. A cynic would probably say it is ‘because it dependent economically and they would have merit since it is simply impossible to finance complete independence yes things are at the moment. That’s also why they are very keen on attracting investors to their resources. Economic Greenland receives around 750.000.000$ each year For perspective That amount to 10.000$ per citizen In addition to that, Denmark pays for all public services costs payrolls and and other expenses associated with this: - Police - Justice system - Public offices - The payrolls of Government of parliament and officials and administrators all related expenses - Prisons and expenses running the facilities These are additional costs of 600.000.000$ per year Greenlands Palement does its independent legislation and has full control over spending has been an independent self governing country since 1978 or 79 They own all rights to their national resources and has historically given access to prospectors and experts in this Denmark cannot intervene. They have full control over Fishing rights which is a incredible bargaining chip Only the justice system (Denmark has 3 courts: the city court, the national court and the Supreme Court) is done by Dan courts, however Bro they are bound by the rules and laws Greenland has legislated. I personally think they cost four 55,000 people would be a stretch to add a hole separate system. I have to mention Climate change… it is changing Greenland in a staggering rate and when some people see possible income and possibilities. Others see the glaciers retreating km in half a lifetime. So that’s great sadness and anxiety since the average temperatures have risen 5-10 degrees way over 2° scientist has warned us about. I recommend seeing documentary about that.
