Being a bluegrass guitar player, I admit I never paid much attention to the hammered dulcimer, until we had a baby and began being exposed to tunes like this one on the various baby soothing devices. Being also a vinyl collector, I started looking for folk records and found a few hammered dulcimer albums. Turns out our little guy LOVES the sound of it. I'm considering buying a dulcimer, as it seem like a good instrument to get children started on making music. We still have some time, since he's only five months now. :-) Your version here is stunningly beautiful.

My parents said I wouldn't fall asleep as a baby unless they played Greensleeves for me as a lullaby. I still love it! It is really wonderful played on a dulcimer. When I was 8 years old my parents bought a piano and I immediately sat down and learned to play, so parents play music early and often to your babies.

I had similar experience with my grandson at the age of a couple of months. I would play some very basic stuff and he would seem to go into a trance. It was indeed quite remarkable. Cheers

What toys play hammered dulcimer and if so, can you please tell me since you claim your child listens to it in the form of a noise device. I agree with your points on hammered dulcimer--there is not enough and it needs to change.

The very 1st time I heard this lovely song (supposedly composed by Henry VIII) was at our annual Summer primary school concert in the sunny garden of Lyndhurst vicarage in the New Forest when it was sung by the class above mine in 1953 when I was 8. The rest of the class performed a living tableau based on the famous 1878 painting titled "And when did you last see your father?" in which a Roundhead tribunal interrogate the young son of a Cavalier while his mother and young siblings look on. I've loved it ever since that far off time.
