With the first tree, I'd probably cut off the thick long ones and keep the short tiny growth to make the tree more "fluffy" at the initial stage, so that I would have thiner branches against a thicker trunk later. But I'm a hobbyist with, like, 10 trees at most

Corin, here in the states blue atlas cedars are equally hard to find and the graft unions are usually nowhere as good as the ones you showed. I have been searching garden centers for years to find a decent one and finally got lucky last October and it is now awaiting styling this spring. We tend to see a lot of them grown as cascade or semi-cascade trees which can aid in hiding any swelling of the base.

Do you think it's too early to work on one here? I'm in northern Colorado, Zone 5-A?
@blueridgebonsai9155
@blueridgebonsai9155 11 ай бұрын
@@christymartin6281 Are you asking me or Corin? I would not do it unless you have a greenhouse or other location where you can keep the tree above freezing afterwards. Once you start working the tree, depending on what you do, you may bring it out of dormancy too early for it to survive. Once they break dormancy their hardiness is greatly diminished and these are only zone 6/7 hardiness to begin with. That is why I do not plan to start on mine until March and I am in zone 7b.

It's been a while since I stopped in the comment section just to say how much I do admire your work on these cedars. So I got this very young atlas cedar growing in a rock planter. I'm in zone 7, didn't do any work on it other then putting it in the planter. It's needles are going a bit reddish. It was about to bud when winter hit and buds kinda stopped at that point. It's location is in a full sun and it has well draining soil. Is there anything I can do to ensure it's winter survival? I know it's a guessing game at this point to wait for spring but any kind of knowledge you can spare will gladly be appreciated.

I would love to see you do a cascade style bonsai with one of those tall blue atlas cedars. its kind of a shame to waste half the tree with common upright/semi upright styles.

Great video, Corin, when potting in this way or even using a faster draining substrate, do you water when the original soil dictates or the "new" one? Thanks

can you air layer blue cedars
@blueridgebonsai9155
@blueridgebonsai9155 11 ай бұрын
There is a KZbinr who has had a little success air layering them but it can take 2-3 years and the success rate is low so most production is by grafting onto either the green variety or onto deodar cedar rootstock.

It’s 2:30 AM here in the USA. Couldn’t sleep, so relaxing by seeing your great bonsai work. Didn’t expect a response in 2 minutes! Forgot to thank you for all your help and great videos. Can the top be air layered to make another tree? Think I may want to try, if it is not a nightmare or years to produce roots. Mine is too tall from the nursery like yours, but it has an interesting top.
