As a young soldier, I was never happier than when I could pack two bags and be gone anywhere in 4 hours. Unfortunately I made myself fairly limited to Germany, as beer was more important than travel to 20 year old me. My current job gave me a breadth of global travel to destination I’d never considered previously. It gave me a glimpse of my childhood dream of learning to drive and just taking random off ramps to explore the country. In retirement that dream is now global. Two bags and a couple of pensions should cover all the bases at home and abroad. (Fingers crossed) Keep the info coming. We all appreciate your effort and valuable insight. Take care and stay safe.

It’s all about balance and finding what works for you, been married 10 years and love it, still do a fair amount of solo travel and it’s cool but other trips it’s nice to have my wife with me to enjoy the time together. Living in Isaan is great but once again I need balance so I keep a condo on the coast to always have the right mix of rural Thailand and my coastal days. With Isaan most cities are same same for the most part but what makes Isaan special is the fantastic sights and nature mixed with festivals and the people, food and music. Same with the coast for me I’m in Bangsaray and wouldn’t wanna stay anywhere bigger but nice to have city close if you want shopping and a more variety of restaurants. We as westerners are very lucky to arrive in Thailand with our great cost of living ratio over the locals and can live a great life not to mention women who wouldn’t give you the time day are interested because of this. Enjoy life and live it to the fullest 🙏🏻

Couldn’t agree with you more on all your thoughts about life and I’m in exactly the same boat! I’m recently retired, single and based in Pattaya and just love my freedom. I also just did a spur of the moment 3000 km trip on my adv 350 through Issan and up to Chiang Mai, rode the Mae Hong Son loop and then down the Myanmar border. Loved every second of it! I spent a night or two in a few Issan towns (not Khon Kaen though) and Udon Thani was the one I enjoyed most - but like you in Khon Kaen I didn’t find any of them overly different or exciting. All nice enough though. Now I’m having a holiday back in Australia (via Bali for a few nights) for a month or two. Then back to Thailand and then on to the Himalayas….. Life’s as good as it gets! Really enjoy your no nonsense, telling it how you see it style and it’s quite uncanny how much our thoughts on everything aline. Keep up,the great work!

@@GreenyTravels When I used to travel solo to thailand, I'd do crazy things to get there. I'd do the most insane work trips before and after so I could have as much time in country as I could work out. One time I was in san diego on a repair, I rented a carto drive there(hour and a half drive) so I could finish and drive to LAX and leave tat car there and fly to BKK, or.... Fly from Chicago, wash my clothes then uber to LAX and fly to BKK a few hours later. (live an hour from LAX) I'd get to thailand between 10-noon and I'd run from the plane and get through customs in less than 30 minutes, then get my bag, get a sim card and I can still smell the smog you smell when you walk out of the airport. Alone in BKK! No phone calls 24/7 "Fix my printer" "dad, I need new soccer shoes" "Dad, I need a new phone" "Hunny, can you fix my washing machine?" Hunny, my car needs a waterpump" Holy fuck, I'm free! That local Sim card was key! I'd be texting bitches... I mean "ladys" on that hour drive to the Conrad, check in, get a shower, and then go sweat in a bar and talk to women while I decompresssed. That feeling that I wasn't a slave to my life was frigging freeing. That first night, Titanium, then Otto bar, then street food then crash. Second day, travel to an island, or Khao sok, or 7 waterfalls, or phuket or huahin, or somewhere, or nowhere. Crappy mexican food, thai food, bad steak, you name it, none of that mattered, I was free in Thailand. We all hear a song where we get this feeling that reminds us of back in the day when we were in jr high, or highschool or something we associate with the music, but when I get in that airport after landing, I get that free feeling. Anything is possible. I wonder if it will be the same when I travel there with my wife.... We will see.

stockholm syndrome is real for all of us. You may wonder ten years down the road what you did, but I rather live that way myself. I cannot have friends because I am a mathematician, and most mathematicians are strange in my mind, and non-mathematicians are thinking at a different level. Making love is probably the only real reason for our existence. We are an evolutionary mistake that will probably die out in less than 500 years. Our lives as humans are already unsustainable. I guess there is a chance that humanity will make it, but just look around and you see over 6 billion dysfunctional beings. The matrix for survivability of the species is not fixed, but it definitely decaying and the phase plane has a negative real number in the complex solution. That basically means we are spirally inward at this point in time. Enjoy the ride. Most western guys have a guilt complex given to them often by their religious mother. Have you broken through that complex? I still have remnants that linger. Thanks for the walk and talk. you wait for another guy? not me ever.

For me, one of the best moments in existence is when she says that it is tiny and I am a western guy. We go through the etiquette game, and then plough through with more vigor than god had intended, and we both succeed in being human. It is sad getting older knowing that it all fades away into nothingness. Enjoy your holey life while you still can. You can travel probably far longer than you can do some other things.
