i read this one last Fall, out of the 'blue.' (get it?) Bear is always good, albeit sometimes tedious, but i have learned to tolerate tedium from public school. i sailed through this one. The Anvil of the Stars was a rough go for me. Moving Mars was a good one.

hahaha, "tolerate tedium from public school", boy do I hear you 🙂 I also enjoyed the Darwin series from Bear.

Hey Peter, cheers for this review. Ive read a number of Greg Bear novels in the past but actually never heard of this series for some reason. Ive always loved the idea of mars colonisation but yet to read a novel focused entirely on it; is this a good one to begin with or are there better examples out there?

You're welcome John, look it is a good one, but for me, it's hard to recommend this over Kim Stanley Robinson's Mars Trilogy. I'm currently rereading Red Mars and I just love that book mate, it'll rank extremely well on the SF shed ladder. I would say start there, Red Mars, Green Mars, Blue Mars, for me, they're the pinnacle of Mars colonisation SF.

I tried the first book in this series, and stopped reading it because I just didn’t care about the “mystery” the story was centered around. If this can be read as a standalone, I might go for it. Bear is frequently great. You need to make a graphic for the Shed Ladder. I love your approach but it’s hard to see the breakdown. Good video as usual.

Thank you Chris, much appreciated. This one can definitely be read stand-alone, no spoilers or assumed knowledge required. Good idea about the graphic, I may just start publishing the rankings as part of the video description, do you think that'll work. Maybe an outro graphic on the videos may work too 🤔 thanks again for all your support.

as an old timey photographer, i could see it was a cloudy day outside the shed and the sun peeked in to mess with the light compensation. it washed in and out a bit. no worries.

@@stephenmorton8017 True indeed, that's the problem I have over the summer months, it gets a little too hot in the evening to shoot a video so I really need to shoot in the morning. The Sci-Fi Shed has a decent skylight so when the sun peeks in and out of clouds it does play a bit of havoc with the exposure settings.
