Greg Goode - 'Philosophical Deconstruction' - Interview by Chris Hebard
Greg has been a philosophical counsellor since 1996. After studying Psychology at California State University, he studied philosophy at the Universitat zu Koln in Cologne, Germany, and received his M.A. and Ph.D. in Philosophy from the University of Rochester. His areas of specialization were decision theory, the philosophy of mind, and the philosophy of George Berkeley. His doctoral dissertation was on the question, "Is it ever rational to be impatient?" Greg studied Advaita Vedanta through the Chinmaya Mission, Sri Atmananda, Jean Klein, and Francis Lucille. He studied the Mahayana teachings of Pure Land Buddhism through Jodo-Shinshu, and studied Chinese Middle-Way Buddhism through the lineage of the pre-eminent scholar of Chinese Buddhism, Master Yin-Shun of Taiwan, P.R.C. and author of The Way to Buddhahood.

Thank you Greg Goode. At the place 6:07 you mention the singing and how it opened your heart. After contemplating Sri Atmananda Kirshnamenon spiritual discourse from your site and Direct Path for almost ten years, in small but intensive doses, I have come to a conclusion that an activity for soothing the nerve system and opening the heart is very necessary along the Self inquiry. For me it has been the singing and it would have been very interesting if you would have talked more about it. If one would ask to choose between the Self inquiry or singing I have to be honest, I would choose singing, but Im happy I don't have to choose. In creative activity like singing the thought is not present alone and it is as if the bridge to the unspeakable is instantly available. As we know singing is about breathing and focusing. It is surrendering to a "baby-like" state. It is an activity were the traumatic events may become visible and audible but the singer can feel detached from them. A very sensitive and vulnerable state to be in. Many say they feel totally naked. Without a soothing activity and opening the heart, in my experience, there is space for spiritual bypassing in rational Self inquiry, this is why I point out this small comment about singing in your interview. Needless to say this does not mean the creativity alone will help us realise who we are. You say in your other video Direct Path is not for those who are looking for relief from anxiety, better use the tools like psychotherapy. I find this very true as well, if only we could be sure the feelings like anxiety are not lurking somewhere ready to roll in with full power. Direct Path is rational and direct and needed for its extreme clarity. For myself it has been the only way to come to a real confrontation what is the truth about objects and I have been able to corner my illusionary believes. Direct Path together with singing I experience heaven at times. Most deepest thank you for your books. Wishing you good tidings, Kristiina Helin

Kristiina, thank you for writing that. I agree some opening the heart is so important. Otherwise it becomes mental and analytical, purely theoretical. In the suttas, the buddha discusses metta 11 times and breathe only four. And discusses metta for longer each time. I like the 6R’s style; it is more legit than the normal metta teaching you hear in the west. Anyway, Im sure singing does as well. I have always wanted to learn to sing. One last thought, I forget who but I think it was actually menon who said that Bhakti feels like it is working better and self enquiry is harder and feels like is not working as well. However, that is misleading and the gains from examining our experience or doing self enquiry in particular are big and more lasting. I felt lucky to hear that. But I agree gotta have both.

This interview would be of immense value if Chris Hubert didn’t keep interrupting with his own interpretations as Greg speaks the most important moments.

Beautiful and thank you so much for this Chris and Greg. My only complaint is that it was too short! Could have listened for hours to you guys deconstructing everything! Namaste, Michael Jeffreys

There is a lot of humor in being able to laugh at myself, recognizing all the various traps described here which I have fallen in, or which I am working to get out of right now. omg. realism, wanting enlightenment as a way of being special, wanting to be my teacher, the container metaphor, etc.etc.

This interview is amazing but I felt the interviewer was sometimes lost. Bernardo Kastrup sounds a bit like Gregg Goode. They should meet for a long interview.

He seems to be saying all the right things, showing that he understands it all, yet there's something about his demeanour that puts me off - the 70s macho guy buttoned down shirt with a necklace thing, and a kind of look to him where he wants to push you out of the way - this is MY show. He looks like the kind of guy that would just ignore you and is quite competitive. I'm hoping that he's different in real life.

Sorry for overloading you with messages, I promise this will be the last one if or until someone addresses me. I have extreme regard for the gnostics and idealists like Blanshard and Berkeley. My convictions are actually idealist and I enjoyed the video very much. It was simply my imperative as an Easter Catholic Christian to point out that misrepresentation.

After all we do have the Bible and that includes the passage I cited from Peter, and the famous "The Kingdom of God is within you" and Paul's "We have the mind of Christ" etc. What can be a more blatant statement of the belief that one has God within them than Eucharistic theology? We believe we ingest the very Body and Blood of The God Man and are deified. In my conviction this prevents the notion that deification is cheap and that one merely needs to realize it like the Gnostics taught.

It's a shame that this is the second time I encounter the claim that orthodox Christianity considers the belief that God is within us as blasphemy. This may be true of certain Protestant traditions but the Apostolic Churches (Catholic, Orthodox and Oriental) have at the center of their theology the Pauline notion of the Body of Christ which presupposes Peter's words that we "become partakers of the divine nature". The word the Orthodox use is THEOSIS literally: deification...

How can one love burritos, if the idea of burrito-ness doesn't exist? Did you ever actually eat a burrito if reality isn't real and thoughts aren't real -- where did burrito-mouth happen? Are we stuck in an never-ending burrito advertisement? Has no-one ever actually tasted the burrito? Taco Bell?

The usual spiritual trappings: bells, flowers, namastes, great Indian teachers, ignorant students. And all examples of not living the supposed truth of non-duality. IMO, non-duality is a technique, not the truth. That's a much easier and more useful claim than saying there is only one consciousness or whatever.
@chocomanger6873
@chocomanger6873 5 жыл бұрын
Non-duality refers to the fact that all is consciousness. There is no separation. It is only apparent. The bells and flowers are you, consciousness. Peace Bro. Hope you figure it out.

Christianity teaches God and the kingdom are within. Not blasphemy. Secondly, Chris is a very good interviewer, but this one is not his best, havin a nervous day; he interrupts and talks way too much this time, esp min 15-30. (I think it’s because he likes it and greg so much, lol). So what. We all have ups and downs man
