I was privileged to hunt with Pretty Girl. A mountain fiest. She was never taught. When she was alittle older, she followed me into a hickory nut patch. We limited out. I used an air rifle. My buddy tried her on public and it didn't work out, but she could find them in the trees. Racoons weren't safe around her either. She knew the business. Would run up fallen trees. Thanks for your video.

Iv got a rat terrier that started treeing at around 6 months and we killed around 200 grey squirrels and a few fox squirrels and a red squirrel the past two years off of her and I can’t wait for these seasons coming up it’s a every weekend thing for 6 months lol but she trees with scent sight and sound and she loves guns and always stays ahead of us when hunting! She begs everyday of the year to go walk and look for squirrels

I’d just use an airgun. Costs less money for ammo, and you won’t get shot all in the meat. Pure headshots and it’s a wrap.

Do you think a shotgun or rifle is better? I have an array of 12 gauge shotguns including a benelli M2, which is my favorite. I also have a mossberg 500 20 gauge that I purchased for small game like rabbits and squirrels. And just yesterday I purchased a ruger precision 10/22, which should be a squirrel slayer after the less than 1 inch groupings I was shooting with it at 50 yards.

They both have their place for sure. Shotguns are definitely better in the early part of the season when so many leaves are still on the trees. Outfitted with an extra-full turkey choke, they do great on headshots without damaging the body meat. Nothing is more fun than shooting them with a .22 though. Air rifles in .22 are also a lot of fun. I've seen a .410/.22 combo I'd love to try. My motto is the more squirrel guns you have, the better.

Round my place the squirrels are pretty well behaved so we don't shoot them much.. We raise cattle, hog and chicken, so squirrel isn't on the menu , sept those crazy mountain people up on the ridge.

The way you are going about it is one way, and often not the most productive. You have to think of squirrel hunting like deer hunting. Go into an area, be camo'd, stay quiet and listen. When you hear the rustling then slowly move in that direction if you cant see it, then wait for the perfect shot.

I had hit a coon one time on the road by my house. Next few days I heard this god awful noise. It was a baby coon under my porch so I guess it was the mom I had hit. But I took the baby coon in and fed it canned cat milk and had her for about a year before I gave her to these people who have a huge farm full of animals. Ever since then I couldn’t bring myself to kill a coon 🤣
