@@JasonHobbsGuitarist What I meant is that his "unconventional" or unpredictable attitude of playing sort of reminds me of Monk's piano playing sometimes. And "serious" means that sometimes his obvious love for making jokes (musical and otherwise) possibly tends to obscure his "deeper" abilities as a musician in general and as a guitarist in particular. I was actually very impressed when the first album of his organ trio came out which convinced me that he can be a much more "coherent" musician than I thought up to then. A bit like when a standup comedian you really like suddenly surprises you by really shining in a serious drama movie - If you get what I mean...

@@hkrause9166 Yeah, it's hard to tell sometimes. Being just a listener not knowing him as a person one has to decide for oneself whether that's actually himself or if he's just hiding behind some of his clever tricks (which he can pull off admirably, however...). There's a fine line sometimes, too, between a true hommage to and/or just making fun of some "idol".

Greg's a beast but there's a thousands of talented musicians out there that work hard that have comparable skills. I don't think we need to elevate someone above others to appreciate their awesome skills. Greg's got a unique voice in his guitar playing and I like it. Antoine Boyer is technically more adept than Greg as are most gypsy lead players yet who cares? Music is good and not a competition.

HOLY SHIT! I could not think of two guitar players alive that I would rather see perform together. Greg is just all round amazing, I've never not smiled while watching him play or listening to his one man banter. He has a style of playing all his own that I can only describe as playful virtuosity. (Even Josh cracked a few smiles watching him play). Josh is IMO the greatest traditional blues guitar player alive today. Amazing video to stumble onto this sunday afternoon.

At first watching Greg it's hard not to wonder if he just picks notes at random and then tries to fix it later. After a while it becomes apparent that he actually has an unbelievable understanding of what's going on. Some of the little bits I pick up on when he's just playing rhythm under Toby's solo or whatever are really pretty amazing. I think there are a quite a few things that slip by under the radar while everyone is focusing on the blazing fast licks, chicken pickin, etc.
@DrLothar
@DrLothar Жыл бұрын
He's got a unique way of voicing chords and phrasing and timing his lines. There's just a weird thing going on there, like at the first half of his solo here. He's going for some almost atonal licks with weird bends and feel etc, but the way he resolves it just makes it sweet, like laying a sleeping baby down in a crib. He's kinda like the old funk cats who knew that you want to make it nasty sometimes, just for the taste.
