Actually many drivers reorted bad crosswinds coming out off turn 2 (where the car becomes light as it transitions of the banking) where Greg Moore crashed and Richie Hearn (who was in perfect physical shape) crashed at retty much the same point, just a bit further down the straight (which meant that he got onto the asphalted part of the infield instead of the grass). Greg Moore was propably hit by a gust of wind at the worst possible time and it's highly questionable, if he would have been able to get the car back under control with a perfectly healthy hand (although admidetly the pain form the injured hand wouldn't have helped).

I was at that race. Sitting in front of pit exit. All you could see was the dust and debris flying in the air. Towards the end of the race, the flag had been lowered to half staff, and one of the supervisors was being informed of the message to the fans. Greg Moore had died. With my pit pass we got to talk with him, same smile and upbeat attitude. Wished him a safe race. Later, we saw Paul Tracy, still in uniform. We all cried together remembering what a great person he was. In a VHS video I have, I stopped it at the moment he lost his life. Head was above cockpit and contacted ground. The rolls after that, his arms are all over the place. Up until that point, his arms remains in the car. Miss Ya Greg. :'(

Greg Moore should not have been cleared to race, he had a badly broken arm and could only steer with one hand. Awful decision by CART here.
@almostfm
@almostfm 9 жыл бұрын
That was probably one factor, but there were others--there almost always are in something like this. It takes a whole chain of things going wrong. There was an access road leading from the infield to the track. When Moore hit it (either going from grass to the road or vice versa) it pitched the car into a barrel roll. Eliminate that crossover (as they've done now by paving the whole area) and the car doesn't get up in the air. The car had just enough time to do about 1/4 of a roll. Cross at a different speed or a different part of the road, and maybe the car has enough time to roll more (or shortens the time so it rolls less), and doesn't hit the wall with the top of the car. That section where the wall juts out was just bad design--the thinking probably being "a car could never end up here". I remember reading an article probably 40 years ago by Dick Berggren where he listed the big three things to improve driver safety: 1. Keep the driver in the car 2. Keep the car inside the track 3. Don't give the combination a head-on shot at anything that won't move when hit. This is what happens when you violate #3. If that section of the wall doesn't jut out, it a) gives the car more time to rotate the cockpit away from the wall, 2) reduces the angle, and therefore the severity of the hit, and 3) means the car doesn't "pancake" against the wall. It would have hit on the nose, and rotated around so the ass end would have hit as well. Spreading that one impact over two lesser ones may have made a difference. It's hard to get a good shot, but it looks like they've at least reduced the angle at which it sticks out. Change _any_ of those things, and we're probably talking about the long career that Moore had after that scary wreck at Fontana.

I have to say, this is one of the most violent racing impacts I've seen, second only to Swede Savage's in 1973, and Gordon Smiley's in 1982. Where the cars just compressed and self-destructed themselves into tiny pieces while releasing all of the energy. This was particularly savage though, damn.
@torstenscholz6243
@torstenscholz6243 3 жыл бұрын
Yeah, it's really brutal to see the car getting shred to pieces like that, but then, that tells a lot about the enormous forces involved in those races and especially in high-speed ovals like this. These drivers know what risks they're taking, Indy cars are among the fastes racing cars in the world, even faster than Formula 1 cars, but even they don't like high speed oval races like this too much, they're rather preferred by Nascar drivers.

When you sustain injuries in your hand due to a situation within 24 hours, the determination should be an absolute "NO" to racing! Since it was his hand, he should've also been put on the disabled list for at least a month, pending further medical examination and treatment (if any)...

I remember watching this Live too... I knew he was dead the instant it happened. I'm guessing he probably sustained well over 200 G's in that instant deceleration. The kinetic energy flying off that car was unbelievable, the car performed as it was designed dissapating the energy, just an unsurvivable impact.
@thunderhead6133
@thunderhead6133 10 жыл бұрын
G-Force is only relative to the car since the driver and car act as two separate bodies. The driver will always sustain less G-Force than the car due to entropy unless the driver himself was the point of impact.
@thunderhead6133
@thunderhead6133 10 жыл бұрын
He doesn't take the full G load of the crash. Due to entropy (dispersion of energy throughout the car) Greg would sustain less G-Force at his restraints (i.e. seatbelts) So some other basic stuff here, Newtonian Law states that every action has an equal and opposite reaction. This only apply's in a frictionless world. So his car impacts the wall and the energy is an equal reaction only when just the front of the car is barely touching. As soon as the car crumples (i.e. entropy) the car loses energy and therefore the impact is less severe. And this dispersion is all happening before the driver receives any G-Load at all. So in the short since the spike in the acceleramator is when the equation is equal. By the time the driver receives the G-Load the cars dispersion of energy has weakened the G-Load. He still takes a lot of G's but its those few miliseconds that determine a 200 G impact from a 75-125 G load.
@thunderhead6133

Thanks. 75 G's is survivable though but that's about the top end of it. It literally is that split second that can save your life
@WhoopityDoo
@WhoopityDoo 9 жыл бұрын
It's also important to note that the time he was under that amount of G-force is negligible; it doesn't have that great of an effect. It's the impact with the wall at that speed that killed him. Basalar skull fracture is what killed him.

im not a doctor, i race my a car at amateur events and tbh it can be unnerving to handle a powerful and light car on track, so i will never understand how you can justify clearing a guy with only one hand functional, the other freshly broken and badly swollen, in constant pain with limited movement requiring a brace and freshly stitched up for good measure. as a racer when the DOCTOR cleared him GREG had no choice but to race with the sponsors expectations, but its obviously meaningless now but as his biggest fan i would have been happy for him to miss whatever races he needed to recover and be able to start the next races with full mobility rather than ending up anything like this

It is one of the 'quiet' features of motorsports that drivers who die instantly or before they're transported are not pronounced at the track, as it eases the legal burden. In some countries it doesn't matter, a fatality at a circuit (like Senna at Imola) generates immediate government involvement. There are those who say that Greg Moore's injuries contributed to his death. There are those who flatly disagree and others still who say we can't know. What we can say is that 1) had he suffered those injuries before racing in a different class, like F1, there is no way he would have been cleared to race. And 2) his injuries didn't help.

Right on, I felt the very same way. He really could've been the star of the new millennium in CART/IndyCar, possibly Formula One too if he was dominant in the former like Villenueve was. His death took the life out of CART and North American OWR that would only be further fueled by JPM leaving for F1 after 2000, among other things.

Interesting you say this- living in Australia, I remember CART was big here in the late 90's and the beginning of the 2000's. I don't remember if you could watch the races here (apart from Gold Coast Indy) but I remember keeping up to date with the series each week through RPM on TV. The last time I had any real awareness of CART was back in 2008- the last event on the Gold Coast, if I recall? What exactly killed off CART in the end? I'm genuinely interested...
@torstenscholz6243
@torstenscholz6243 3 жыл бұрын
@@Bennyboy1985 Actually, by 2008, CART didn't exist anymore, they merged with Indy Car League in early 2008. The reason for the downfall was the competition with Indy Car, they always fought for the best teams, drivers and tracks, but CART had more and more difficulties to acquire them and trailed behind Indy, which is why they were already bankrupt by 2003. After continuing the Champ Car series under new ownership in 2004, they finally were disbanded before the 2008 season and were merged into Indy car, thus finally reuniting both organisations.

What also may have contributed to the accident was his badly swollen hand from an incident just the day before in the paddock. He may not have been able to move the steering wheel quickly enough to correct for the cars sliding motion. The team should not have let him race that day in that condition, he would still probably be with us right now.

This is the kind of racing accident that is nearly impossible to survive, particularly in an open-wheel car. When the car goes sideways and the top of the car impacts a solid structure first in midair, the driver's body is crushed against the wall by the force of the car colliding with the wall. It was a terribly tragic and unlucky way for some one to pass on; RIP

i know im 9 years late to comment. but i bet you it was not a terrible way to die... Greg was way too young and it is tragic... but he was a well paid race car driver living a good life at the pentacle of time for motorsports. He was young and happy and doing what he absolutely loved to do... and though he didnt die instantly. he was unconscious instantly and didnt feel a thing... he probably thought oh no ive spun out! OH NO THIS IS NOT GOOD ... and then BAM it was over in an instant. im sure he was dead after the first impact though he may have struck debris while the tub was violently flipping any one of those hits could have killed him though im still pretty sure it was the first impact due to the mega high Gforce. but that aside, doing what you love to do with all your heart... knowing the risk and then meeting them. I would think that is a pretty awesome, quick painless way to pass away. its better than slowly dying of cancer from fumes over several years...

Roger Penske liked Greg so much he signed him up to drive one of his cars. The awful irony of Greg Moore's crash was the fact that it occurred at a track his new boss owned. I'm very sure that after this tragedy Mr. Penske made damn sure that all the beautiful grass on the backstretch was replaced with asphalt. I'm not assigning any blame at Roger, period. This was one of those deals where what was learned would benefit racing, but that knowledge was gained at the expense of Greg Moore's life.

He should not have even been in the car. He got hit on a motor scooter in the pits the day before and banged up his hand. The medicine that took the pain away would also take away any "feel" he would have. The swelling would make it impossible to make fine movements that are needed to "catch" a car that is getting loose. Had he just not raced, he would probably still be here today.

It's somewhat unfair to look at it hindsight. Any injury limits car control, but the chances it will lead to death is less than 1%. That's why doctors, sponsors, and teams clear drivers to race. But there's always that 1% that doesn't make it. Think of it this way: There's also 1% you text and drive tomorrow and kill someone, but you still do it because there's 99% chance nothing will happen. Same reasoning his team, sponsor, and doctors used on that tragic day. It's just the way life is.

Things are constantly being done to improve safety in racing. After this crash, the infield was paved at this track to prevent cars getting airborne, the HANS device is mandatory at most racing levels to reduce head and neck injuries, the SAFER barrier has been installed at high speed tracks like this, to name a few, and the cars get safer every year. Fatalities will still occur at such speeds, but are very rare now compared to 40 or 50 years ago, when half a dozen drivers would die every year.

Gonzalo "Gonchi" Rodriguez: Laguna Seca ( 11/ 09/ 1999). Greg Moore: Fontana ( 31/10/1999).

I've thought about that reverse angel portion of the broadcast a lot over the years. I was watching this live when it happened and remember it well when the replays were shown. My only guess is that is showed the cockpit hitting the wall so violently that it has been scrubbed from available video. Such a tragic end to a great driver.

I remember watching this live. You could see his arms flailing out of the cockpit, like a ragdoll. IIRC, they showed a replay, but only once, and then again, I'm not even sure. I guess they got the memo that he was gone and out of respect, they didn't show it again. Horrible crash.

I think that might be a bit too harsh. Greg was a racer and he would not have put himself or others in danger. There is a lot of evidence that supports a tire puncture after brushing the wall. The two elements that really had the most effect were speed and the grass. There is no reason that the grass should have been there. In addition to that, 240+mph is simply too fast. I actually threw up when I saw that wreck as I knew it was instantly fatal.

Apparently right after the crash CART sent out word that this was a Code 5 crash which is the code for a serious injury or life threatening incident. Also IIRC ESPN did not show replays of the crash itself and pulled the replay of the race from its schedule.

That's just wrong to not show the replay and to pull the entire race replay. They want us to like this sport but not accept and embrace all of the dangers that go along with it. Compare this to Gordon Smiley in '82, when they showed all kinds of replays. And that was just in the time trials.

this coverage is extremely frustrating. it doesn't show the accident again, it doesn't give close ups of the rescue, and what the hell was the rescue truck thinking by driving thru the debris field to get to moore?! moore is still in the cock pit and it seems to be the only body part left intact (upside down) so there would be hope he might be alright. until you stop the video and notice he flew thru the air about 50 ft hitting the top of the car flush with the backstop. massive impact.

Jeff Brown policies in place at all raceways call for the medical personal to move drivers to be pronounced dead away from the race track. The reason for this is it the Dr pronounces death on the racetrack the event becomes part of an accident investigation and all races would not be permitted until the investigation is concluded.

well, you're "crazy". not because greg moore should have sat this one out, i agree with that, of course it's easy to say that after the fact right? but to say the scooter accident was a "warning from above" is silly. obviously the giant head in the sky would have known moore was going to race anyway... i get the sentiment but you're invoking the use of superstition to make decisions.

I wonder how he ended up heading straight towards that particular wall with so much speed, given where the track was in relation to it? The wall he that Greg hit is literally parallel to the track? Doesn’t make sense.
@almostfm
@almostfm 3 жыл бұрын
The wall isn't parallel to the track at that point. It angles out slightly so create an opening for safety crews to have access to the track. Unfortunately, the rotation of the path of the car combined with that angle out combined to make a very acute angle of impact.

I've watched the crash dozens of times on my recording and I believe that the Hanford Device was to blame for the accident. As you stated he was deep in the field and I think it was Tony Kanaan that passed him and due to the Hanford Device taking so much downforce off Greg's nose he understeered, corrected and then lost control. Sliding sideways across the grass caused the car to essentially hydroplane then the tires caught the pavement allowing the car to flip top first into the cement barrier.
