Greg "The Hammer" Valentine discusses the 20/20 incident when WWF wrestler David Schultz slaps reporter, John Stossel. Streaming now 📺 TitleMatchNetwork.com
Back on December 28, 1984, John Stossel was backstage Madison Square Garden conducting interviews about the secrets of pro wrestling. Valentine remembers it well, the moment when Stossel told Schultz (aka Dr. D) "I think this (wrestling) is fake".
Within seconds, Dr. D slaps John Stossel with back-to-back open hand slaps. Stossel would go down both times before running off down the hallway. He would go on to sue Vince McMahon's WWF (World Wrestling Federation).
Schultz would stay in the company for another couple months but was ultimately fired. Find out what Greg Valentine witnessed backstage a WWF show at the Los Angeles Sportatorium.

@@monkeystank5241 Not fake so much as choreographed. Ya, obviously no one is really getting beaten with a bat or sledgehammer, or getting their heads driven into the mat. Obviously THAT STUFF isn’t real. However, it takes a lot of training to do what they do and NOT hurt people. I see them more as stuntmen. They still get hit & thrown around and injured, but it’s controlled & choreographed. Stossell found out just how “fake” an open hand slap is, which the wrestlers do all the time.

If you listen to Shultz's interview, he claims Hogan was insecure and afraid that Shultz would take liberty and really try to beat and humiliate Hogan. It's hard to believe everything wrestlers say because sometimes it's a work, but I could believe that. I know Hogan wrestled Shultz once on Saturday Night's Main Event, but don't recall any other matches. Hogan probably didn't want to work with Shultz because of his insecurities. Who knows the real truth?
@kbuselmeier69
@kbuselmeier69 3 жыл бұрын
I do not think that would have worked in 1984. The WWF was pushing family oriented cartoon entertainment. They were more interested in kids buying Hulkamania t shirts, ice cream bars, the rock and wrestling connection with Cindy Lauper, and watching the WWF cartoon on Saturday mornings. If Dr,. D was to go out there and cut a foul mouthed SCSA type of promo it would have all been over. Time was not right.

Its worth remembering that Schultz didn't get fired for hitting the reporter. They fired he when he went into business for himself during a show in LA in February 1985. He tried to do his own angle with Mr. T at a show and they got rid of him that night. The Hammer doesn’t seem to age at all or should I say the only one who aged prettier and healthier than most of his peers. It’s clear he wasn’t ever on steroids judging from his physique then and now. Respected.

Dr. D was great in the 70s and 80s but he wouldn't be able to do that stuff today. His gimmick would cause too many problems in today's world.

It’s ironic on that night Schultz was wrestling Inoki, who slapped a teenage boy on national TV himself. It’s funny that the boy took it like a man and bowed to Inoki. After that, fans in Japan would ask Inoki to slap them instead of an autograph.

I always loved his matches. To me he was always believable but watching these interviews... He is a straight to the point without an ego wrestler that cared about the business... However, I read or heard that if you took liberties on him that he didn't approve, he would stretched you in the ring and really mess you up. He was tough in a world of tough men and respected.

Stossel doesn't believe a thing he says on Fox or anywhere else. He wants to keep his job at Fox plain & simple! If they asked him to be the new Alan Colmes tomorrow and espouse "liberal beliefs" to be a foil for Hannity or some other host there he'd do it. Don't believe for a minute he believes anything he says on the air.

I grew up in a small town in Connecticut. One day a black Lincoln pulled up and it was Dr D looking for a known town criminal. Idk if Dr D was involved with bondsman or not but when he pulled away he also had the Dr D license plate. Pretty cool moment as a young kid and a huge wrestling fan at the time.
