I really like what this plugin did to the midrange on this mix. That's the hardest thing to get right on the mix bus or in a mastering situation. But there is much more to be learned from this video then just whether or not this is a good plugin. If you read between the lines you can pick up some really great mixing habits from Greg's approach. Here's a hint: You can visually see he has very little plugins in his session, and the second is that he uses something on the mix bus to get tone, character and vibe from his mix - those two habits alone can get you really far regardless of what tools you use. Great Job Greg! Huge fan of your work anyway. Cheers!

+Modern Mixing Agreed! I think I might need more control over the features inside the plugin to make it useful for me but I can see how a home studio musician who needs quick results could benefit from this.

If you read even further between the line you can visually see he sitting next to some god dam expensive equipment. I think we would all use very little plugins in his situation and there's no need to start a $50 compressor vs $50 000 compressor debate. I don't think your getting that kind of quality for 50 bucks!

+Eric John Music It's just multi-band compression and a bit of harmonic saturation from what I can tell, maybe some EQ as well, but honestly it's not hard to do, not to mention that you should mix the individual stems better before addressing the mix bus like that The larger reason is probably because people are tired of "One Nobs" from waves
@jrguitargeek8 жыл бұрын
+Eric John Music The problem with this plugin is that you can do the same thing yourself by using a good buss compressor, and maybe some tape or solid state saturation. No one is arguing that it does not sound good. It just takes all the control away from the engineer. I just can't see myself using a master buss compressor with which I cannot manipulate attack or release controls. However, I really like Greg Wells, and I'm definitely going to demo his waves plugins, because I think he's got the credibility to make me want to try them at least. If it sounds as good as using my Slate Virtual Buss compressors and Virtual Tape Machine, I'll gladly make the switch.

I just finished mixing a 3-song melodic death metal demo and there's been no discussion about mastering with the band I'm doing it for. I was going to just slap some L1 on it and call it done, when I got the Waves MixCentric mail in my inbox. Well, what can I say. I decided to demo it and it really does work. It really does bring the extra mojo to a mix. In this context and with this time budget it absolutely delivers as a mastering plugin.

I also initially reacted negatively... but tried the free demo, and it sounds really good. And, real engineers have pieces of analog gear that they run things thru STOCK - there are even companies that offer this. It's no surprise that with technology increasing exponentially, digital counterparts now exist. We'll have to get used to it... robots will drive our cars and mix our songs. Humans will program them tho (at least for now) :)

It's affordable, does some nice things, and if you don't overuse the heck out of it.. you can get a very nice sound very quickly. Is there anything wrong with that? Or does that make you 'not pro' ? Sometimes I may use it, sometimes I may not. Depends. It's a nice little tool, and it's in my toolbox, just as I'm sure it's in his. My favorite part is when he says "That almost sounds broken.." I've tried allot of Waves Audio plugins. Most of Greg's Wells plugins is my new favorite! I bought his bundle a couple of days ago for $59.00. This plug-in has replaced the complicated Abbey Road TG Mastering Chain in my mixes. I wonder if I can get a refund of a no longer used plug-in? LoL! I don't use any piano in my songs, so I guess that plug-in is useless? If I find a use for it, I'll let you know. All the other plugins in the bundle make up for that loss! I use a Sony MDR-7506 studio headphone for mixing and mastering.

Often on message boards people ask questions that cause some people to answer sarcastically with comments along the line of "just get the Waves mix my track plugin" so hearing about this I had to demo it. It certainly made a big difference to my mix as I cranked it up but there seemed to be a lot of boosting going on so I tried it with MeterPlugs Perception plugin to compare the sound with no volume boost. I found it made some changes to my mix which I didn't welcome (that's why I mixed it that way) such as taking some intensity off of the bass end and losing the warmth of my mix. The more compression it delivers tends to get that over compressed pumping sound. I also tried it on a master session where it made minimal difference to the sound. I'm guessing that the plugin is intended for mixing maybe as a shortcut to mastering? Interesting to hear Greg use the word "shortcut" in the video. In my view for what this does it is terribly overpriced even at the intro offer of $149. If it were sold for $20 then it might be a consideration for people learning to mix who are some way off of mastering as an end of mix bus final polish before putting their creations on CD, iPod or SoundCloud etc. But my view is that you're paying a lot for very little and surrender control over your mix with it's use. Nice interface though and very easy to use.

Not everyone has a budget for mastering or wants to learn how to do it themselves & this plugin will be perfect for them. If this promotes a higher percentage of better sounding mixes out there (fingers crossed...), who can complain? (should also please the "make it loud" type of client, lol) PS would be interesting to know if the song was mixed into MixCentric or if it was applied to a mix in progress (the bypassed mix didn't sound finished and also sounded slightly different to the mix on the VoiceCentric video). Either way, it looks like a good addition to the prosumer market!

Hard to gauge this session.. The individual elements are recorded well even without the "Lift" this plugin gives it. Almost sounds mid side? It lifts the upper frequencies on the sides and dips the middle more as you push it! If you listen close the middle doesn't change much but the sides are being processed heavily to compensate for the squeeze in the middle! I got the Voicecentric concept by stacking effects to get to a "happy place" with vocals in a mix by adding subtle bumps in the right frequencies and removing unwanted and problematic frequencies, but the "Mix" in the name might be a little misleading for some? When using that term you are referring to the tracks overall tonal character and balance. Shaping more or less.. I haven't used this plugin in depth but the gain staging in the video creates a false positive in my opinion. Summing is one of the hardest things to grasp especially in the digital realms where there is so much headroom! Again because of the huge level differences in the video it's hard to judge this based on the example..

Big fan Mr.Wells. I'm a newbie producer and have your voice centric, and several other Waves plug ins. Is this one designed to be used in conjunction with voice? Or VC just on the vocal track, then Mixcentric on the bus? I hope the question doesn't sound ridiculous, but I'm new to this and have only recently discovered my passion for the technical side of mixing and production, having only been a performer for decades. Thx.

The idea is magical, but I'd never use something that gives you so little control to what's actually doing and showing.
