Gregg Shorthand is really based on phonetics. In other word, each consonant represents a particular sound, whereas a shorthand vowel indicates 1 - 3 sounds.

I remember when you could not get hired as a secretary unless you knew shorthand. I took it in high school with typing and worked as a secretary later. I remember word processors coming into the work force and you had to boot up with a disk and the command prompt. Shows my age.

A dying art we can all work to preserve. Anybody learning Gregg Notehand by chance? I'm learning it now, may switch to Simplified or Jubilee
@Tayohni
@Tayohni 5 жыл бұрын
I just recently got the book for Gregg Notehand out of curiousity. I already learned simplified on my own, but that was a while back. I still use it, but there's way too much to remember when you don't use it very often. I get stuck trying to remember some of the word endings and strokes for certain blends. So I thought I'd get some ideas from notehand on what word part strokes would be logical to get rid of, and maybe learn better how to write words out with only the most highly used sound blends, like -ING or -ILY. I'm reading through the Gregg Notehand book, comparing what the differences are between that and simplified. I've found that it's only got 42 brief forms, which is better for me. Simplified has brief forms like "SHALL" and "Business" or "During" and I really don't use those words often enough to justify memorizing rarely used brief forms. But I don't like the Notehand version of the outlines for some of the words. Actually, Notehand is not at all what I thought it would be. I am less than 1/4 of the way through the book, discovered that there is NO stroke for the X in notehand and promptly decided I would Not be using that version (at least not all of it.) I'm still making a list of all the rules though, just not practicing any of the outlines. If someone sees this a couple months from now (Its Oct 2018 now), I'll probably be finished going through the book. So if you want to hear more, give a notification on this comment and I'll come back and say more about notehand and how it compares to simplified.
@Tayohni
@Tayohni 5 жыл бұрын
I like Notehand, but not entirely, so I'll do that thing I said in my above post and tell more. It is very cut down, much less to keep track of as far as the devices go. I finished making a list of the devices and the brief forms. This list is less than 3 sheets of letter size (A4) paper. But I recall learning simplified and I had all the rules written out on the equivalent of 35 to 40 sheets of letter size paper. Brief forms in Notehand: 42 of them, and mostly based on the top 100 most used words of english Phrasing: Not as many phrasing devices as simplified, but the important/relavant tools are their. Word sounds/parts: (example, write a disjoined t over a word to represent trans) There are the really important ones: word endings like ing, ings, ingly, ment, ble, rity, lity, ulty. Word beginnings like con, com, ex, dis, des, other than Trans and Ward, there are not any other of the fancy word parts, just basics. But the whole list of devices are pretty much just basics. I think someone would be able to write 50 wpm...still faster than many people can type. My final word on this: Notehand would be an okay place to start with if you wanted to test out a version of gregg that you could learn fast. Just beware there's no X. If you wanted to advance to a faster version of Gregg, you could. However the real Gregg Notehand book is expensive. It's just as well to go learn series 90 which is the next most cut down version of gregg, is more recent, and has an X in the alphabet.
@Tayohni
@Tayohni 5 жыл бұрын
Oh, interesting! I knew the older shorthand were much faster than the versions from simplified on. But 280 wpm is insane! That's like so fast I think pens could go flying across the room by accident and you'd need pen collision insurance! I would be totally happy to write shorthand at a slow speed, like 80wpm. I just want to compete with the average typing speed which for me is around 60 wpm when I'm not really trying. I'm looking over series 90 right now which (i think) is the next fastest version of gregg after Notehand. But since I learned simplified, I'm sticking with some of the original brief forms I learned.

@ajs11201 10 ай бұрын
@@andieallison6792 No, consonant pairs are voiced and unvoiced. The "b" is voiced, and its partner (the "p") is unvoiced. The linguistic difference is that your vocal cords don't vibrate on unvoiced consonants. And the original observation is correct -- the voiced consonants are always the larger of the pair -- v is bigger than f, g is bigger than k, and d is bigger than t.

Sumit Kumar it depends on your time and efforts. I will have videos coming out soon, but I can't say how soon. I have been tied up with tutorials that I am taking for myself, those for video editing and animation. In my absence from KZbin, I have written hundreds of Gregg shorthand words. The video clips of them are not yet compiled before new tutorials on Gregg shorthand can released to public.

#superconfusing. I find it weird how a written language is described in phonetic terms when the symbol, intuitively, would describe a different symbol.
@ajs11201
@ajs11201 10 ай бұрын
Valid point, but the symbols of Gregg don't correspond one to one to alphabetic letters. For example, in shorthand, there is no "c" (an "s" or "k" is used instead). And in shorthand, there are single symbols for sh, th, ch, ng, and nk blends, whereas the alphabet needs two letters for all these sounds.
@LindaLarkin
@LindaLarkin 10 ай бұрын
@@ajs11201 I guess it would make more sense if I knew how to write in short hand. It seems way too complicated to learn, sadly.
@ajs11201
@ajs11201 10 ай бұрын
@@LindaLarkin The basic sounds are pretty simple, and most students learn all of those in a couple days, but the advanced concepts get somewhat complicated and that can create a bit of a memory load. But that's the beauty of it--putting all those concepts together, some folks can write at 200 or even 300 words per minute.
