Greg is at the top of my list because he has EVERYTHING: brutal groove, feeling, tasty melodies, yummy notes choice, impressive technical virtuosity, each album is a complete universe of flavors, his tone is beyond amazing, and his fusion (rock-jazz-and sometimes-latin-influence) makes him a never boring monster.

My all-time favorite. NOBODY BETTER. PERIOD. Not just my favorite guitar player, but over-all musician as well. Nobody puts everything together like Greg. The 2 albums he did with Richie, they're pretty even on guitar playing, but every song Greg wrote is pretty much stellar, and every song Richie wrote is pretty much MEH.

He doesn’t get anywhere near the credit he deserves. Hybrid picking before anyone was doing it outside of Country. His transition from rock to fusion was mind blowing. His influence on every single modern fusion player is undeniable. He’s a GOAT for certain.

Man, what awesome tone he has, not to mention technique and essentially everything else in his playing. He is also very versatile. His first album was him ripping with Billy Sheehan and their tones are so authentic that they complimented each other so well. Then Greg's 2nd album was Howe II with his brother AL singing. I've got to say I got to see these dudes in Oakland in 1988 and they were great. Sounded like I was listening to Van Halen II. Greg was without a doubt the closest I have heard (especially live) to King Edward's Brown Sound. Howe II was a really good band. Really great tunes with perfectly fitting solos. Then I can also hear Greg tearing it up with dudes that played with Miles Davis. Greg fit right in with Paul Chambers. His tone had matured so well. Greg Howe is always a really great listening experience. It's also really cool how far and wide he travels to bring his playing literally all over the world... and in many ways Greg is a world class guy. He's extremely well spoken, he is heavily involved in the design of his guitars and amps too. That new Amp he finished designing was really cool. He had intentionally tooled it way back for a straight ahead, less congested and more simplistic approach which he achieved with great success. Pretty much the definition of his career and it is well deserved.

Greg has always been an inspiration. Back when my Shrapnel CD came out, we used to exchange ideas over the phone every now and then. I have great memories of him performing with his brother Al on vocals and Joe Nevolo on drums in Howe 2. Joe Nevolo was the same drummer who played on my Shrapnel CD. Ever time I'd see him play, I'd go home and have tons of new ideas!

It's amazing how many virtuoso level guitarists there seems to be. I can't resist comparing them to find the best of the best. It's easy when some aspect of their playing grabs your attention. For me that extreme level of technical playing can at times create sensory overload blurring the lines enough it all begins to sound the same. Greg Howe grabs my attention with his very identifiable style that's unique to him. I will always know when I'm listening to Greg Howe. For me he's one of the most recognizable of the whole lot of them.
