This is gold. I have been tinkering with SEO to drive traffic to my SaaS app. Directories seems like the way, and he's right as a coder the immediate temptation is to build programmatic SEO sites from scratch, but that isn't the quickest way to market for sure.

Love your episodes, Greg! Small feedback: I have noticed that when guests are talking, you seem very distracted … seems like you might be multitasking, looking at multiple screens, phone, etc. To me, as a viewer it takes away from the enjoyment of focusing on guests (the voice in my head goes: “If the host doesn’t care enough, why should I?”). Maybe turn off your vid when guests are talking? Regardless, great content and thank you for all your work!

Excellent stuff! I've had a hyperlocal directory for over 12 years now - not in a great location, but where I live, and it brings in something every month. But I've got so many ideas of hyper local, hyper niched directories swimming in my head, I don't know where to start. Ahhh, but I do know where to start, and I'm off to do that!

any recs on plugins for people?
@Lowdin86
@Lowdin86 3 күн бұрын
@@GregIsenberg Two established WordPress plugins come to mind, Toolset and Advanced Custom Fields. Toolset is probably easier to get running with and has a guide on starting a directory type of site. These types of plugins allow the creation of custom post types in WordPress (a single custom post could represent anything like a specific product or a restaurant location), and then additional functionality can be layered on top such as search/filter widgets to show the custom post types.

Ok So I create a directory, say it is “criminal lawyers near me”. Just a dumb example. How do I then populate the directory with businesses on this directory topic on Day 0? Easy to create the pages and the website but unclear how to actually populate each of the businesses in the directory etc. We want people to come to our directory but they need something to search that matches their intent. This video is informative however it misses a step, how to populate the directory with the relevant directory data! I am not going to write articles until we know is what people are searching for as you say in this video. Please help us understand this. What am I missing??

I don't want to sound like a hater, because I can easily admit I'm wrong if the data shows it. But I always raise an eyebrow to the good Samaritans on presenting the easy ways to make money. If the powder is fresh, tell your friends, but not the public! John has admittedly been doing this for a while. Coming up with new ideas daily; testing ideas daily; searching for new content on proven ideas...daily. All leading up to many months, if not years, of effort for this business. English has a lot of words, but I still question how many viable directory phrases remain that can bring in the income. Don't get me wrong, I tip my hat to him for the awesome success he has seen from this. But on the flip side, maybe we're too late to this ballgame? For instance, would you risk going into drop-shipping when there are a million influencers already trying to sell their courses on it? So other than the most motivated of folks, you might need a good dose of luck to pursue this successfully. But I'm probably wrong, do your own research, this is not financial advice, yada yada.

when I started making directories, people said: "there are no directories left to make". But I made 30. The reason I share the secrets is that I know I will dominate my own field with directories. @@johnrushx Again, there is a time element to this. When did you start? What do you define as your own "field"? If you told me "business ideas" was your field, and you created directories from that phrase (and all permutations of that phrase), I would be surprised if it took you more than a week, even as a beginner, to come up with an exhaustive list. Thus, you probably moved on to other fields; maybe tool reviews, maybe vacation spots, whatever. Multiply that by how many folks (your competitors) were creating directories. Regardless, you found there was an efficiency to be made. Namely, developing your toolset to help in the creation of directories. And no one can blame you for generating revenue off of the access to your toolset. It may be an even more lucrative hustle than the directory creation itself. And here's where I make the connection back to the example in my previous comment...drop-shipping. I'm not claiming it's there, yet. It's simply a perspective to consider. glhf

This video feels very much like a sales pitch to use this guy's tool. As someone who has started multiple directories himself, some of the info presented here is not only outdated, but is just genuinely bad advice. Your website runs the risk of being delisted and completely rekt by using AI generated content. Furthermore, he never even really goes deep into the details of the steps and just brushes past most of the SEO work. This was pretty mediocre filler content imho for folks who have no idea where to start. This doesn't give them a clear path forward, but rather soft sells them on a product that's being pushed. You can do better Greg!

I like the idea of directories. However, his method is neither clear enough, nor can make you rich overnight. The idea of boosting DR is quite bad. Don't do it if you want to have a chance to rank organically. Directories without DR, though, are not appealing to potential buyers/subscribers. Been watching John a couple of times, and I leave with the same feeling: something's missing, incomplete. In my opinion, his marketing is great. You can feel he's a great marketing person. And if he makes money out of this nonsense, good for him. I don't see the value here.

have you made a successful directory?
@pythonate2906
@pythonate2906 Күн бұрын
@@johnrushx nope, I did not, cause it won't be profitable for me. I don't see it happening. The only one able to capitalize from this is probably you, by selling the course, and not by monetizing directories. I will engagr in this conversation and help the KZbinr, but not for your method, which I find far from a successful one. I don't see it. Pretty unclear. And if I'd make it, I'd just generate one with Python as a static site or even with WP. Not going to pay for shit to make a directory. I seen your tweets and they triggered my attention, because I think directories are a good option, but the method you sell is not it. I get it, you built some and that's fine, but I just don't see it as a method. To get traffic from the word of mouth and social media will require me to spend countless hours promoting one. To scale it's just unlikely. And what ROI are we talking about here? For beginners with some serious time to waste and some budget, maybe. I'd put 10k immediately into this if it worked. But there's no sign of a real business, at least not for me.
