It's so good to see somenone else digging ! I quit the job because I was alone and everything has been destroyed, so many times... I digged for ten years and built ten spots, all destroyed, by some jerks, by the police, by myself forced by the police... But it's good to see someone explaining how to do it, and you did it pretty well. Your dirt seems very good and you have the water. Best wishes man, long life to your jumps ! (from France)

It's always nice to see people who are passionate about not only riding but building as well. Growing up there were jumps in about every patch of woods you could find around the county. The people who rode all grew up and the scene died off completely and now all those spots are just dense woods.

So I live in rural area and we have to explore a lot for these perfect areas. When exploring I would say go to construction sites they have dirt piles there. Also if they are doing new division of houses in an area they will have wicked piles of dirt that we make tracks on. And usually workers have mad respect for us. Good luck though!

As a mountainbiker these gaps look so insanely steep, high and even quite far if you take in mind how high you fly. I mean essentially it's like dropping down a 2 storey building and being lucky enough to find your way down at a very steep and short landing. Just a bit too short or a bit too far and you are either faced by a sharp edge of the landing or a flat surface. So yeah, mad respect to anyone that rides (and builds) these sculptures!

I know how much work it takes to dig up that much soil. Then you layer it up with the Rich Clay Earth (I would say it is the heaviest and the hardest of soils). When we did this behind my backyard, which is under a small mountain in Wollongong. We would build them in a group of a dozen or more kids. But you do it all yourself. There is 50% water and 50% sweat on those ramps. 👍

Hey Greg, nice job on the jumps. If I may ad a few comments as I used to work for engineering firm doing soil engineering, here's a little Soils 101 for you guys. ---Your soil works great and the reason that's so is you luckily have soil that's rich in clay particles. Three things I know of that lead to good compaction, stability and ultimately maximum relative density are, clay, fines and water. Your know you have clay when you wet it and run it between your fingers and it has a slippery greasy feel to it. Clay works great for two reasons, one, water bonds to it well and the combination bonds to the other particles well. Two, clay breaks down to really small particles so it fills the gaps between the various particles. So the two characteristics form a well bonded and dense product. ---When working with non-clays, fines and particular organic fines help, non-organic fines help fill in the smaller spaces and organic fines help hold water and in both circumstances its the bonding with water that is the key. Organic fines can be easily deciphered also, add a little water and again rub it between your fingers, this time instead of feeling greasy it will feel a little courser and will stain your fingers. ----Of course the water content (the other is compaction effort) is of huge importance here. It's the meniscus and or surface tension effect of water, that the various particles use to bind the composition together. Another example is beach sand, dry sand is fluffy and dry and does not hold together, but add a little water and you can build a sand castle. As the castle drys it will eventually fall a part. If that same sand had clay or fines mixed in, it would hold together better and longer and have a greater performance capability. ----So, your lucky, or who ever provided the soil knew what you were going to use it for and made a educated choice. One thing I would recommend it that you wet the surface before you start the rebuild stage, adding a little water will help keep the 'core' of your ramp hydrated and the replaced dirt will adhere to it easier. Also if you keep the ramps covered most of the time it would help hold in the moisture. Proper moisture content is the key not much, not to little; the sun, low air humidity and the wind will suck out the ramps water content. Anyway, enjoy the ramps and did I see a back flip....hmm?
