Gregorian chant is the central tradition of Western plainchant, a form of monophonic, unaccompanied sacred song of the western Roman Catholic Church. Gregorian chant developed mainly in western and central Europe during the 9th and 10th centuries, with later additions and redaction. Although popular legend credits Pope St. Gregory the Great with inventing Gregorian chant, scholars believe that it arose from a later Carolingian synthesis of Roman chant and Gallican chant.
Gregorian chants were organized initially into four, then eight, and finally twelve modes. Typical melodic features include a characteristic ambitus, and also characteristic intervallic patterns relative to a referential mode final, incipits and cadences, the use of reciting tones at a particular distance from the final, around which the other notes of the melody revolve, and a vocabulary of musical motifs woven together through a process called centonization to create families of related chants. The scale patterns are organized against a background pattern formed of conjunct and disjunct tetrachords, producing a larger pitch system called the gamut. The chants can be sung by using six-note patterns called hexachords. Gregorian melodies are traditionally written using neumes, an early form of musical notation from which the modern four-line and five-line staff developed. Multi-voice elaborations of Gregorian chant, known as organum, were an early stage in the development of Western polyphony.

You respond by mentioning the Salem Witch Trials, which were in 1692-3, or 700 years after the height of Gregorian chant's development. And then you invoke Hectate, an ancient Greek goddess who has nothing to do with 1000AD, Gregorian Chanting, early Christendom, latter Christendom, or even really witchcraft. In which case I can only assume you're a Wiccan of some sort? Can't be a properly Germanic tradition, unless it's a unified system. Though that doesn't matter either way; even then, neither the Salem Witch Trials nor any form of pagan belief (real or modern) has anything to do with this video *or* the comments you are responding to. I remember 20 years ago I went to Paris with my grandma. We went to Notre Dame, saw an advertisement for a Gregorian chant concert that night and decided to go. Imagine this live, in a beautiful old cathedral, candlelight everywhere, and the sound bouncing around for three seconds with the great acoustics inside Notre Dame. It was very relaxing and beautiful. I was sad when it burned.

Jesus saved me from my troubles, and continues to do so. Walking in the way of the Holy Spirit is the only true way to live, no other way can give life real meaning, or real happiness, or the joy of everyday life such as this. I'm a Hindu & listening to Gregorian chants has always been very soothing. It's similar to our ancient Vedic chants in Sanskrit. I do not understand Latin or Sanskrit but such music is very calming , therapeutic, so relaxing that one has to experience it for themselves ! The solfeggio harmonics embedded within the chants are far older than the catholic church and even Christianity, they go way, way back, into the great civilisations forgotten in the mists of time. Thankfully, somebody had the forethought to embed the numbers into some of the books placed into the Bible, sadly Pope Gregory took a lot of these books out and most of the numbers, along with many truths and much history, are now lost.

I would be very interested in hearing your story! I am a life-long (70) Atheist but really like Robert Gass' "Om Namah Shivaya" which has led me to other forms of chanting to relieve "Existential Angst" . . if I HAD to choose a religion, it would be Buddhism . .

"Nirvana" literally means "no qualities" and the Buddhists believe that we all merge with Absolute Reality when we have detached from this material world. In other words: our individuality is not permament. There is also no higher conscious and intelligent being in Buddhism. Alltogether it is pretty boring and depressing. According to the Vedic scriptures though there is an eternal source (God) and we are His eternal particles (like the sun and the sunshine). By freedom of choice we have chosen to enjoy separately from Him. That is why we are now entangled in a cycle of incarnations ("samsara") in the material world. When we have purified our selfish consciousness, we will wake up in the spiritual world again, to continue our eternal passtimes with God. Hare Krsna!

So funny story, if you wanna take the second to read. So my dad has always listened to music at night to help him sleep, well one night someone had forgotten to turn on our porch light right outside my window, so its three am, pitch black and I hear CHANTS right outside my door, honestly thought I was going to die.
