This is a video in my new Core Concepts series -- designed to provide students and lifelong learners a brief discussion focused on one main concept from a classic philosophical text and thinker.
This Core Concept video focuses on Marcus Tullius Cicero's work On Duties, book 1, where - in the course of discussing the virtue of courage (which includes greatness of soul) - he claims that courage is not only concerned with the emotion of fear, but also the emotions of desire, pleasure, pain, and anger. This is the Stoic position on the emotions, and differs from other virtue ethics perspectives on courage, particularly those of Plato and Aristotle

Extremely interesting stuff, thanks. Courage and Anger are two separate things. Beautiful. Courage and anger look so similar because they both have strength, power, and energy in them. But in truth one is healthy, and the other is poisonous .

The differentiation between courage and anger was interesting, enlightening and very valid. Very relevant in the current time in political terms, with both some politicians and voters being angry and mistaking that for courage.

Yes, that's a common mistake. The other side is just angry. But one's own side is courageous

I thank you also, Dr. Sadler. :) Working on emotional mastery is a central part of my 'ascesis' (training). I use the tools of intention and 'mindfulness' [moment-to-moment attentiveness to 'mindstream' (stream-of-consciousness)] to train my mind in that direction. I have still occasionally been experiencing the tendency to react with anger (or other dispreferred emotions) to certain triggers. But I find that sustained training (using the method I mentioned in previous sentence) can gradually reduce any dispreferred emotional tendencies and increasingly bring the mind to 'ataraxia' (ancient Greek philosophical term, meaning: literally, ''non-distress'', or mental tranquility, peace).
