Dr. Sadler, I just wanted to say thank you for everything you do. You are a beacon of light in darkness. Forgive my poetics. It's just that I learn so much from you.

People often associate the word "Stoic" with "Boring. This talk is an interesting snapshot into why that view leaves out all of the Good that comes from having intentional control of your impulses. Having just finished studying Cognitive Psychology, I can state that science agrees with Cicero in what it takes to be a healthy and happy human, as well as, a positive force in the world. Great Talk!

Glad you enjoyed it! Yes, that's a core aspect to Stoic philosophy (as well as to other schools of virtue ethics) - getting some handle on one's desires, impulses, already established habits, etc. and then intentionally reworking them. . .

The Cognitive people like to see this as a new discovery on the part of science. Haha! As if, there were no great minds before us who could use reason to understand the world. In my opinion, which is also shared by some of the latest in neuroscience, the continuous practice of this sort of mindful, "virtuous" lifestyle is an effective way to lift our thinking and ourselves beyond our baser nature.

True, many of them do. Some of them acknowledge a debt to Epictetus in particular, but there isn't a lot of realization about the extent of virtue ethics more generally among them (with a few exceptions)

I always enjoy listening to you talk about Stoic thought. Thanks. Hope more people explore Patreonage. Nice Friday evening focus. :)

Glad to read it! You know, I don't think I've seen it called that before "patreonage" - but that's smart. I think I'm going to use that!

@GregoryBSadler5 жыл бұрын
Of course. Pretty much every ethicist is confident about that in general. Otherwise, there really wouldn't be much point in doing ethics, right?
