GPU sag kills cards. When the ATX standard was developed in 1995, they didn't envision dual / triple / quad slot 3kg bricks.

Bro that card is only a few years old. And furthermore that PC was spotless with zero dust. Even if they were abusing the PC, it would take a few more years before a card dies. In fact cyrpto mining cards are usually fine years later. @@BelowAmbient

Even if there's no visible cracks, with so much weight pulling it, the card most likely flexed and some solder joints cracked, or, even worse, some solder pads got ripped out underneath the GPU and/or memory dies. Yet another example to remind anyone watching this, do NOT ship/transport your PC with the GPU installed, always remove it first!

That 4070 Ti Super is worth more than my whole PC. That's one lucky soul getting that rig back. I really need to upgrade. At least she still runs! I can't believe how solid these old systems were. Build something in 2009, upgrade through the years, and it still runs in 2024! I really like the way that TUF Gaming card looks. I don't know why. Maybe the glowy RGB helps? That little thing to prop up the card is a nice touch. I'm glad it was such a simple solution, if expensive. I had to replace my RX560 some years back. It was when even that was going for $200 used due to the crypto mess. So it can really be rough. Glad you were able to get it working again! Greg, you rock.

Thanks for these videos, Greg! I built my first custom PC in 2012 and i was a nervous wreck. My cable management was bad, I made some mistakes in the build initially that was a miracle it didnt cost me to replace the parts. I have since replaced parts over the years to stay fairly modern, so I have gotten some practice, but I have also seen a lot of your videos and they have really given me the confidence to do PC building. Just two weekends ago Inactually built my wife a new PC from the ground up. No stress, no anxiety, no mistakes this time. These videos of yours were a big part of that.

One more thing i would have done is to turn the top fans as exhaust. there is a lot of air coming in but the hot air wont escape the case because it is being pushed downwards from the top fans. the 1 exhaust fan on the back is not enough. Tried this exact configuration on my rig and it raised the overall temperatures of the system under load.

8:53 - just had a 2080ti killed over time through a lack of thermal paste coverage to one part of the core - leading to the memory controller frying itself , and artifacts/bsod under load. The thermal paste coverage here looks even worse than my example tbh so this might be what's killed the card.

I bet the Memory or the GPU Die are starting to peel away from the Substrate. Zooming in on the serial-number on the back of that card (prior to your disassembly at around 8:34), you can extract part of the manufacture date. I can read a 211x (can't tell the next digit is a 0, 1 or 2). So that tells me it was manufactured in 2021, in either the months of October, November or December (2110, 2111, 2112). MSI provides a 3-year warranty, based on the manufacture date. So the warranty should be good until at October 2024. Now if there is signs of obvious physical damage, forget that warranty. Now after the disassembly, also not sure of that warranty! And being featured in this video as well, lol.

Greg, did you try the original GPU in the 2nd PCIE slot ? The 2nd 8-16x PCIE slot is usually routed via the PCH. Recently a client was refered to me after other shops could not do anything but suggest he buys a new GPU... (5600x, 16GB RAM, 6600xt). Basically no display incl with GPU in a known good PC, BUT: Keyboard responds with toggle for CAPS/NUM lock... This means post... MAC address gets allocated an IP... Which means either PXE-boot or OS boot... His mobo only has 1x x16 PCIE slot.. (Note this for later). In my AMD B450 mobo, using his CPU, RAM and PSU, my 1st x16 PCIE slot gave the same issue.... (No display). My 2nd PCIE slot is x8 and instantly gave display... Back to my x16 slot = display (1st time during tests that it gave display on my x16 slot). Moved his CPU,RAM,GPU and PSU back to his mobo, and everything was good. This was almost 2 months ago. At 1st I was not sure why doing this fixed it, but then someone reminded me about those slots being routed via the PCH for that board/chipset.

pcb flex, solder joints under the chips. it can be fixed most likely, but its a pretty involved job. as others are mentioning, never ship a pc with a gpu installed in a slot. take it out and stuff some of those foam bags in then the gpu laying 'flat' real fast, and another bag on top of the gpu. then its away from the slots, and isolated from the rest of the system so it doesn't damage itself or the rest of the rig.

Ive been lucky since starting pc gaming in 2017 that I havent had a major problem with any iterations or upgrades of my build. Started it all on the i7-7700k and a GTX 1080 moved to the i9-9900k and 2070 Super to a i7-12700k currently and a 3070ti til I get a new case to fit a 4090 in Have always had atleast 32gb of ddr4 ram. Currently have 64gb 3600 cl16 ddr4 and a 1300w psu. Used a 750w and 850w prior upgrade paths. PC gaming has evolved significantly over the years in terms of hardware, hardware debugging, and prices. Thats what makes it fun tho and watching these videos is always a blast.

You don't want to go right into heating a card thinking it will fix it without checking for cracks or shorts first on the 12v Rails that's usually a good starting point and usually the main culprit.

The pads under the core and memory are probably ripped from the pcb. I wouldn’t try to re flow it. Send it to a repair person like northwest repair

heating up components does work sometimes...had a laptop that would not give me a picture and figured it was onboard video so i wrapped it in a towel and booted up then let it sit till it over heated and shut down...was skeptical but when i booted up again it worked...too bad the fix only lasted a week...

Too bad I don't live in that area, haha. About 2 months ago my old 980ti died on me suddenly and I spent several hours that day trying to rule out the GPU as the bricked part, but nope, it was the GPU. While I don't enjoy havign to spend money on replacing things, I am happy that i have a 4070ti as a replacement, hopefully this card will last me 8 years like my last one did :)

Guess when I noticed card. little saggy so maybe broken pcie connector. I think usually few places do those for 4090 etc where price of fix is ok but for cheaper card it maybe too much. Edit: that gpu sag / forces can crack balls on rams near pcie connector. Some times you need to replace ram chip or fix pads on pcb. Not sure is their testing software custom or publicly available. They use linux pc with working gpu as display adapter and use other pcie slot for testing card.

I don't have much knowledge about this particular case, but looking at the GPU slightly off just once is telling me either it sag because of the weight or the poor shipping condition that led to the sagging condition that cause the no post problem
