Hey, great videos Greg! I built myself my first gaming pc last week, any idea why the first time i turn it on for the day it shows no signal and after restart its fine? Tried all fixes i could find for now its not fixing it : ( Its Ryzen 5 2600, A320M S2H rev1, Teamcrate 2x8gb 3200 mhz, rx 5700 xt... i doubt it could be a cpu issue with the ram, or probably drivers issue.

@@TuttoLotta There is not enough info to give an answer. For example, no signal was right away after turning the PC on or monitor showed at least something at the beggining (bios boot info, maybe spinning wheel of Windows)? Tried all fixes... what fixes? Are you sure, that monitor is connected at right port? All connectors connected all the way in and maybe not partially disconnected when doing other stuff in the PC? If there would be Windows driver issue you would see at least something on the screen after turning on a PC.

For those interested: that power supply is an OEM unit from SOLYTECH. From what I could find out, they build some Xilence and Apexgaming units. I have seen videos where some of these prebuilt PCs come with HighPower or Channel Well Technology (CWT) built units. CWT is actually the OEM of a lot of brand-name PSUs and makes decent stuff. Don't let the boring exterior fool you ;)

Just to clarify the CSM stuff: CSM enabled lets you boot in legacy/MBR mode unless specified otherwise in the boot options (usually there are some options to select what driver is loaded for each bootable option). When CSM is disabled it will boot into EFI/GPT mode. If you install Windows under EFI and try to boot it via CSM while not selecting the EFI driver first, it won't boot and viceversa
@TommyAgramonSeth
@TommyAgramonSeth Жыл бұрын
To clarify further, CSM stands for Compatibility Support Module (that's why it boots in legacy mode when it's enabled) and there's pretty much no reason to leave it enabled during a fresh Windows install. EFI/GPT is faster, more secure and supports drives larger than 2 TB with a higher number of partitions.
@AeiKei
@AeiKei Жыл бұрын
@@TommyAgramonSeth of course, the problem is CSM comes enabled by default and when you reset the CMOS it reverts it to enabled

Also a second thought of mine since I experienced it with a customer just a few weeks ago: some motherboards when paired with certain graphics cards will not output image on HDMI when posting if CSM is disabled (happened with a Aorus x570s AX and a RX6600 XT). The solution was to enable CSM and select the EFI driver first for the storage

We had a rash of weird problems without computers at work, likely due to an update that came down from corporate IT. Dell has a program called "Command Update", I'd log in with my ID (so the computer would have internet access), run that program, it would install a bunch of updates, including a BIOS update, and then the machines ran fine.

Greg helped me with a recent build with watching him repair computers. I have a Ryzen 7 5800x but when I bought it, the processor and ram was already on the mother board when I got it from an eBay seller. I recently built a Ryzen 5 5500 "odd jobs" machine so my gaming machine is not tied up. Was not getting a post though with the dram light lit up on the board. Based on issues he had in the past, I reset the CMOS, rechecked the seating of the ram, and inserted ram one module at a time. I found out that the DDR4 modules should make a loud snap when inserted, It also meant that I did not freak out when it took a while to do ram training.

Easy fixes are always great to come across, and I think the viewer's sister will be thrilled to get a working PC. Maybe she'll be a future content creator? As to CSM, you already know that CSM stands for Compatibility Support Module, but what it actually does is pretty straightforward. It lets you boot the system as if you were running a Legacy BIOS system. This means that drives formatted with CSM on will use MBR, drives with CSM off will use GPT. So, if a drive was formatted and installed with CSM on, it will have to be kept on, or the drive converted to GPT to be usable with CSM off. Same goes in the opposite direction. If you format a drive with CSM off and then turn it on, the PC won't see it, since it can no longer recognize GPT partitioned drives. If you want to install an older OS on a UEFI system, use CSM, otherwise, leave it off. That's my rule of thumb.
@RVail623
@RVail623 Жыл бұрын
To be specific: Windows 7 & earlier require "CSM=enabled" for the system boot function to work. Windows 7 can be installed on a modern UEFI system hardware with GPT format & CSM=disabled. But for final boot to desktop will require switching to CSM=enabled. AFAIK, there is no work-around to making the required bios setup changes, when running a dual-boot Windows 7/Windows 10 system.

I bought a cheap prebuilt years ago. And I can say that a cheapo PSU can cause all manner of problems. From the reviews I knew going into it that the PSU was going to be a problem, so when I purchased the computer I also purchased a new more reliable PSU to replace the one that came in the prebuilt. The PC arrived about a week before the replacement PSU and I got a little antsy and wanted to run it for a bit before the PSU arrived. That was my mistake, the computer worked for about 5 hours, then started having issues. At best I would see glitches across the screen, at worst it would blue screen. I contacted the company that prebuilt the system, and after a little back and forth(you know, did you turn it off and back on again) I got a full RMA and sent the PC back to them to be repaired. While it was out the replacement PSU arrived. When the PC came back to me it included a sheet that said what it was they had to fix. Turns out the cheapo PSU damaged the RAM cards. Both of them. So those were replaced. Immediately once I got the PC out of the box I ripped out the cheapo PSU(well, not "ripped") and replaced it with the new one. That computer served me well after that for four years. Upgraded the GPU from a GTX 720 to a GTX 960 after a while. Later upgraded to a newer better computer and the old one continued to serve me well for another four years as a streaming computer using a capture device so that I didn't have to run the streaming software on my gaming PC. It is still sitting here near my desk as I've since upgraded computers again and am using the previous PC as the streaming computer now. And as far as I know the older one still works. Won't be doing any gaming on it any time soon, but it still turns on and runs. Note: The RAM cards getting damaged was NOT one of the things listed in any of the reviews as something that would go wrong with the PSU. All of the reviews that mentioned the PSU just had the PSU either overheating, or simply failing and no longer providing power. Or, both. But me being the super lucky one, my version of the PSU decided to take other components with it.

I got my son an Ibuypower gaming system, and it worked great out of the box. We have since upgraded his monitor, graphics card, power supply, hard drive, and ram but it is still going strong considering it was a 2018 build. I told him I would upgrade the MB, CPU, and Ram at the end of the summer so that is coming but his system has worked out fine for us and it was very budget friendly. There is one thing that can be done with a dead PSU if there's a lot of soldering being done: Remove the PCB, the C14 (power cord) connector, and voltage switch to install a DC barrel jack and a power switch to power the fan inside to suck the soldering fumes away from the work area. Also, add a charcoal filter after flipping the fan over inside the case. Voila! A homemade fume extractor! I prefer to upcycle/repurpose than to recycle.

Something shorted in that PSU. Heard that "chirp" it made when you cut power to it via the switch. (you have to really pay attention to hear it but it's audible in the video. Happens maybe 5 to 10 seconds after he flipped the switch back to off position) A sound I've always heard from PSUs when something is shorted on one of the power rails. Though in this case maybe something shorted inside the PSU itself that is tripping the over current protection.

I watch these to help me troubleshoot problems, because I don't have the the space or the money to keep extra parts for testing so watching helps me with my own rig. Anyways the capitors blow one the power supply you can tell if they are blown because they leak greyish luquid on the compacitors themselves and dry like caked on dust. Edit: I know what a blown compacitor looks like because they did that to mine all the time on some of my old pre built tower motherboards. Some even blow off the board itself, others just blow their tops or bottoms.

Next time you are looking into PSU failure check the ground connection. In my years ive came across a few where the ground was loose, disconnected, or the area it was grounded to wasnt desirable anymore (not sure why this happens, I assume corrosion of some sort). I dont think you should fix em and toss em back in but im curious to see how many "dead" units arent actually dead.

First thing you did was look at the PSU? From what the customer said, the first thing I would do is check out the RAM and see if he had jammed it in the wrong way around. With extreme force it’s actually possible to get RAM in the wrong way around. It strips the gold off some connectors and can cause all kinds of weird shorts. I’ve seen someone do it. Check if the pins on the board are OK too. Didn’t turn out to be that, but that is what I would have done first.

Ironically cheap prebuilts are actually a boon to the enthusiast community. It's probably the source of at least half of our new members. They want to get into PC gaming or PCs in general, and well you don't have a lot of other options besides a prebuilt. Sure you could search the internet for how to make your own, but let's just accept that 99% of the populace is not going to get into PCs through DIY. No, they buy the prebuilt, it breaks, and either they get lucky with something like geek squad, buy a new prebuilt, or find the solution on the internet, and once you've done that first hardware swap and realize PC's really aren't that delicate, that it really is adult legos (just with more steps) a new enthusiast is born.

Some years back I fixed my coworkers PC. Think it was an iBuypower or Cyberpower with an old i5 kind of like this one. Said it worked but made a weird noise. So I took it home and turned it on. It turned on and booted fine but sounded like an aed bomb was about to go off. That high pitched ac whine. Had him buy a evga bronze power supply, installed it in 10 min, and good to go. They really cheap out on their psw's.

I see this is still an issue with iBUYPOWER prebuilts. My first gaming PC was an iBUYPOWER I bought back in 2012 that came with a Great Wall PSU that looked similar to this PSU. Mine went out with a loud bang and took a DIMM slot on the MB with it. Managed to keep the PC limping along for another year with a suboptimal RAM configuration. On the plus side, replacing the PSU got me interested in building my own PC.

It's good we can learn alot from people like you, so we too can help people we know, so many people who use a PC know close to nothing about it, when something doesn't work blaming random things that they are all wrong about, fairly recently a friend had issues with a few modernish games, he blamed the games themselves, one specifically. On my new game PC I built i7-12700 + rtx 3080 (now 4080) said game had zero issues, heck, even on my old pc i5-3330 + gtx 1050 it had no real issues, he got kicked out of the game alot, gpu driver timeout, he tried everything but nothing fixed it, when I looked I had an idea of what the problem could be instantly, his gpu was a gtx 780, a pretty powerful gpu back in It's day and should be powerful enough to run the game in question, but it's not getting any new gpu drivers anymore, so support for games released (or sometimes updated alot) after the driver cutoff date is iffy at best, my old gtx 1050 may be weaker then his gtx 780, but because it got new driver support longer it still works pretty well as long as a newer game isn't too demanding and doesn't overwhelm its low 2 gb of vram (and doesn't exclusively use directx 12). Getting a newer gpu (rtx 2060 super) fixed his issues, as I said it would, more recent drivers, as powerful as a high end gpu you buy is, even after many years, if you keep it for over a decade it won't have any modernish drivers anymore, so even if it technically has enough power to run newer games, it won't run them well without newer drivers/on really old drivers.

Someone else has problems with several games and their partner assumes he knows alot about PC's also, he blames the games not working properly on Windows 10, again nonsense as both my new PC on Windows 11, and my old PC on Windows 10 can run these (older) games fine, why it won't run on their PC's? I can't be sure, haven't been able to spend alot of time with their PC's, I can guess what may give issues though, the main PC is on AMD Ryzen 1st gen and I am certain they never updated the bios, I'm personally not very experienced with AMD Ryzen, but I have read alot about Ryzen 1st gen having quite a few issues that where fixed both by bios updates and newer gen Ryzen CPU's, not sure if this is the cause but as there are issues that fixes have been released for that is where I'd start, the other system is on an AMD Bulldozer platform, which I also heard wasn't the best, still no personal experience with so I can't say for certain what the issue is, on the first PC with the Ryzen 1st gen CPU, one game one of them wants to play that doesn't run well (which the other blames on the game developers) is one I know really sucks up ram when you do more in it, and likes faster ram, the 16 gb of I believe 2400 mghz ram in that Ryzen 1st gen system may be the culprit there, as my faster 32 gb of ram in my Intel 12th gen system has no such issues. I don't want to talk bad about AMD, but I do think the time for Ryzen 1000 series CPU's is over, I believe they would be helped immensely by updating the bios, plopping a Ryzen 5000 CPU in their motherboard, and putting in ddr4 32gb 3200/3600 ram in it, regarding the AMD Bulldozer system yeah I think that's ready to be replaced completely for something more modern, intel 12th/13th gen or AMD Ryzen 7000.

For the non booting with csm enabled it means the windows was applied in MBP [master boot partition] and will not work with rebar enabled because csm is enabled if csm is off and which means windows is gpt partition which will work with rebar I had this issue a few days ago only way to get csm to run with windows it needs to be turned on in bios before you install windows so that windows installs as gpt partition and not mbp master boot partition hope this helps slightly

Booting with or without CSM depends on how Windows was installed. The partition layout slightly differs between when installing with CSM enabled and disabled.If you change it afterwards, it usually won't be able to boot any more, because the partition layout is different. CSM should be off now and is by default with recent BIOS versions, at least on platforms that support Windows 11, generally speaking. If it was installed with CSM enable, you might want to reinstall it with CSM disabled.

Sucks for hardware to fail, but that's the best case scenario if a PSU fails. One of the two failures I've had was like this, despite the PSU blowing a capacitor. The other zapped a motherboard when it failed.

the CMS option is like a compatibility mode, if the operating system is recent and has been installed in UEFI mode the system will boot with the option disabled, some older hardware only work with CMS on

Exactly what I was going to comment. What I have personally noticed with my other laptop, the only laptop I have that has Legacy mode in the BIOS, is that when Legacy mode is turned on (CSM is also turned on as a result), Windows formats the disk as MBR (Master Boot Record), which is for legacy devices lacking UEFI, maybe also for CSM mode too. However, when the BIOS was in UEFI mode (Legacy mode turned off), Windows formats the disk as GPT before installing onto that disk. As a result, it is possible CSM mode cannot work with GPT the same way pure UEFI mode cannot work with MBR.

9:22 I can tell you why. AHCI or IDE (CSM) is a, as the name suggests, host controller. When you install Windows, it installs using that host controller. If you change the controller after the installation of Windows, Windows will not boot. So it all comes down to what controller was used during installation of Windows. If AHCI was used, setting it to IDE (CSM) will cause Windows NOT to boot and the other way around too. That's your answer.

I imagine you needed to disable CSM in order to boot because the operating system is windows 11 and afaik windows 11 does not have legacy bios support. It's possible that the default settings for this particular motherboard (or whatever bios revision it has) has CSM enabled, so when the user unplugged the CMOS battery and reset the bios, CSM became reenabled which would prevent Windows 11 from booting.
