@@donnyboi1990 Those tend to have better breakers, but you'll notice a little light on the pricy ones saying "Protected" or "Fault" if that light is out, there's a little fuse you can replace under it.

Actually it depends on how bad the surge is, they can take smaller surges, just not the huge spikes, I lived in Wyoming Summer Thunderstorm land if you ask me. The power was always going on and off, its not when the power goes off that causes problems its when power comes back on is when a surge happens, because everyones connected devices are being powered on again all at the same time so may shut off and power on a few times, that is a surge this is what causes harm to computers. This is why in my bios I set it to stay off during a loss of power, the prevents the surge when power comes back online and helps the grid because it don't have to power that device back up again.

Cool that you mentioned the outlets and the power itself. Years ago, I had a nice APU that monitored our power. Not just what the things plugged into it were doing, but the power come into it. And it was showing some spikes coming into our house. We called the electric company, they said everything was fine on their end. So, I consulted a friend who is way smarter than me, and into electronics and things. Turns out we can have the electric company attach a monitor to our meter that looks at what we were concerned about, at no charge funny enough. The electric company didn't mention that when we talked to them. So, we called them back and they came out an installed it. After it ran for a couple weeks they came out and collected it. Then informing us that there was no issue. However, two days later there were trucks out from the electric company changing the transformers (and whatever else is attached to the power poles) on our street. They also installed a new meter on our house. Coincidence? I think not. Years after the above incident, our house had a lightning strike. Being dumb and lazy, despite it not being used anymore, never took down our TV antenna, a relatively big one from the days of broadcast TV. Over time its ground had degraded and this time it failed completely. The only things that were plugged in that we lost were all on the same circuit, the TV and our computer in that room. The cheap power strips failed to trip. Ended up needing to replace the outlets as well, as they were fried. The main PC with the newer APU at the time was fine. Its APU took the hit and did what it was supposed to. Now, we have a power monitor/surge system on our houses breaker box, every outlet is GFCI, and everything that matters is either on an APU or a quality surge protector. If all of those fail, then chances are I have bigger problems. And the antenna was scrapped a right after the strike.

Damn, this feels so strange. I had this exact same situation happen to me a couple months back, i was vaccuming too close to my PC, i heard a loud pop, and then my rig wouldn't show any signs of life afterwards. Like the customer in this video, my monitor worked fine in the outlet on its own, and i even swapped out the power board my pc and monitor were connected to and nothing would work. Ended up taking it into a repair shop as I didnt have spare parts on hand, and it worked fine for them right away. Brought it home and it booted no problem. Still cost me $140 to learn that difficult lesson that nothing was technically wrong. But it was definitely a weird experience and i got no good answers from it but i'm thankful i'm not the only one with that experience! Amazing video like always!

Reminded me of my own ordeal few months back. Swapped everything from my RV05 to an Alta GM1 and my room went 'pop' as soon as I flipped the switch. Tested at other locations in the house, replaced the cable to the rig and every time there will be a trip. Send to a local PC shop and it tripped their test section as well. In the end, it was a pass-through cable from the Alta GM1 to the Psu that was the culprit. A $2 fix.

Also I knew to look towards the PSU as soon as he described the symptoms. Maybe the psu did it's job with his power strip and prevented the system from turning back on. He did mention it didn't turn on with another outlet either, so maybe his breaker box triggered and shut off the outlets within the surge area

It was an older house like 25 to 30 years old. This can happen 100%

Awe, glad you had your expert helper on hand to give you a hand with this one. :-) It's often the simplest solutions that are overlooked in our industry Greg, because most of us who've been doing this for a while, see, and start to think, "It can't possibly be that simple?"...When in actual fact, we can't make that assumption. Totally glad the user didn't lose out on anything and the rig was unaffected by the surge. Awesome to see that the surge protector did its job and took the hit for the system and didn't take it out in the long run. Hopefully the user was able to square away the strip & outlets at his home when he received the rig back. Thanks for this video, and all the work you do. Big fan of your channel.

@Greg - I am a technician in Houston that has this type of problem with PCs at my company due to unreliable power. I have experienced this type of issue myself but especially with Dell desktops. We normally pull the power cord > press the power button while disconnected > plug back in an turn on the PC. This normally drains any power from the MB and restores the state of the machine to normal. I wonder if this happened naturally during the time it took the machine to get to your home for troubleshooting. -All the best! Brian F.

If he has a resettable surge protector, it may need to be reset by the reset switch or simply unplugging it for a 1/2 hour might reset itself depending on how the manufacturer made it. Like someone else suggested, test outlets with a lamp. If there is power, then the next step would be to replace the power cable IMO. Great video!

I had almost the exact same problem in my kitchen. At some point, a previous owner had installed a dedicated 20a receptacle above a counter. Never had a problem with it, but we only used it for phone chargers. When we remodeled the kitchen, I tried plugging in my Ryobi battery charger and it would light up like it was on, but would freak out and reset itself in loops when you tried to charge a battery pack. Since the outlet had "worked" up until that point, I assumed the charger was bad and went and got a second one from the garage and it behaved the exact same way. I checked the voltage at the outlet and got 120 volts and an outlet tester showed a properly wired outlet. I switched off the breaker and pulled the outlet out, no problems at the connections to the outlet. I swapped out the outlet temporarily with a known good one and the battery charger STILL lost it's mind when trying to charge a battery. I was stumped. I pulled the cover off the breaker box and checked the breaker connection, it looked fine. Since the outlet was a special 20 amp rather than the standard 15 amp, it had it's own breaker. I took the breaker out of the box and found the problem. The contacts on the breaker that slotted over the spade on the buss bar in the box must have been making poor contact for I don't know how long and had burned/arced a lot of the material off of the spade of the buss bar. The breaker was barely making any contact with the buss bar at all. The circuit could handle the piddly 2 amps a phone charger was pulling, but not whatever a Ryobi 18v battery charger pulls. Your client could have a similar situation going on with the supply breaker that feeds the outlets in that room.

I work with PC maintenance and once I had the customer's power cable short right in my face. Nothing terrible happened, a few sparks flew around, replaced his power cable and everything worked fine. So even if it's a very unlikely problem, you should NEVER rule it out. Best regards!

In Europe where some, if not many, houses have 3 phased power into the building, if one breaker goes and there is some usage like 3 phased stowes or heathers that runs simultaneus, then you can get some seepage of low volt power going back into the outlet and give a computer that goes on and off all the time. To protect from this I have added a remote switch in line with the power surge protector, so that it can't start until I fix the breaker!

All of the outlets on the outer walls were replaced and rewired. In the center of the house, there were some load-bearing walls. It separated the kitchen from the living room and in between was a walk-in pantry. I had my rig on a desk in the living room against that wall. What I did not know, or even consider, those outlets were never improved. They were regular looking 3 pronged outlets BUT there were not grounded. There wasn't much for regulations back in the 70s and without having a proper test done on 2 specific outlets I would never have known. It would cause all sorts of problems, including odd inconsistent shutdowns. Once I moved the rig to a proper outlet it never happened again.

Several things here. Most rooms are wired on a single breaker. It could be a bad breaker. Also, we don't know the age of the home nor the condition of the outlets in the home. We have all seen older outlets get loose making for a poor connection and that PC is pulling more current than anything else in the room more than likely. A bad breaker will also cause the same issues. You are in Florida...In the middle of summer...central air units cutting on sometimes (especially without a soft start kit or funtion) pull a lot of current. It wouldn't be a bad idea to get an electrician to come check things out.

Yep. Was more or less getting to that toward the end of the video. Inconsistent power delivery in a particular room should be traced first to the outlet and then to the room's breaker.

I'm wondering if there was some sort of overcurrent protection breaker in the PSU that needed some time to reset before working again. It could be that the elapsed time between the surge and the retest in the property was not enough to let this happen... or maybe the PSU needed to discharge somewhat before it reset. Just a theory. Either way, replacing the PSU is probably the right call.

Believe me, power cables definitely can and do go bad. I've had it happen personally before, and replaced a few for other people that had shorted. The circuit breaker did its job and tripped in every one of those cases thank goodness. And that sounds like a good example of one shorting internally. I'd start with just replacing the power cable. And since you're giving him a new PSU, it should have a new power cable included, I hope you gave it to him as well. The plug and surge protector are likely just fine. If it was throwing the circuit breaker and not tripping the surge protector, it could be an overload on the circuit. Either way, I'd start with a new plug.

One time I had this very strange power issue with my pc. I tried everything I could think of - other then replacing the "Power-Cable" that goes from the wall to the PSU itself. Eventually I was suggested to try a different PSU-cable and that was the problem. As for what happened to the cable - I never found out. The cable itself was a very high end and rather thick cable. It originally came with the PSU i was using at that time a - An 80+ Gold FM 1250w PSU that was a very high end unit. With a replacement cable system started working like new and the PSU went on t serve me a total of 9 years out of it's 10 year Manufactures warranty. It was passed on to a friend and last I knew - it was still working after 12+ years of usage.

Oh of course they can! Just not very often. I've _never_ run into this issue in my years of troubleshooting, building, etc. But it doesn't mean it shouldn't be checked which is why we mentioned it :-)

Before we fixed our old house wiring.... Displayport cables shocked me. Special. It's feasible there was some weird, goofy interference with a bad ground on that circuit and the system.

Hi Greg, great vid! Had a similar issue with my son's pc. Strangely enough, was working an evening and when he tried to boot up in the morning, nothing. Thought it was the power supply but didn;t smell anything odd. Plugged into a different outlet and still nothing, Luckily I unplugged the power cable and tried a differnt one and voila! What caused it to short out is still a mystery. Maybe the same in this case.

Strange electricity issues here. Similar happened to me years ago in my mother's house. I remember that my PC turned off without any reason, and it won't turn on again unless I switch the outlet, then came to the original outlet and booted normally.

It sounds similar to an issue I had years back, which ended up being dirty power from old un-grounded outlets. Most things worked fine, but anything with a sensitive power supply would have all sorts of weird issues.

Grag, would you consider investigating the claim of these Titanium class efficiency ratings? Next time: Using a Kill-A-Watt meter turn on the rig with the old Corsair PSU and compare those readings with the newer unit? Great content as always sir!

Yeah he really needs to try another room that's on a separate breaker. If he has AFCI protection on certain rooms in the house, but not others? Try one that's not on an AFCI protected line. I have a garage setup because the rest of the condo is on AFCI (except the kitchen and I wasn't doing that), and the builders who built this place picked probably the twitchiest AFCI's they could find. Even with power strips and/or a UPS trying to smooth the load, anything drawing more than maybe 250-300W dynamically? Meaning that load will shift slightly up and down? They are tripped because they think they are seeing a loose connection. Edit: Love the special helper.

There are replacement (wall outlet to PC) power cables that use 14 gauge wires, instead of the standard 16 gauge wires. The PC owner should probably invest in one of those red/green/yellow LED $8 outlet testers, that can detect if the hot & neutral portions were wired incorrectly. Older homes may not even include a ground portion, so that would indicate a need for simply replacing the wall outlet with a properly grounded 3-prong wall outlet. As someone else mentioned: double-check the breaker box for possible corrosion induced by sparking between the breaker and spade on the buss bar.
