We need to make some changes... to our server rack! Ubiquiti sent over tons of super useful home security equipment - most of which we'll be connecting and setting up in this video. We'll also be restructuring much of the rack's layout to better suit the new hardware and various cable runs. We aren't QUITE finished with this thing! More to come in the next server video! Thanks for watching.

In my early IT days, my supervisor opted to load a full size server rack into the back of an empty box truck with equipment still in the rack. I told him the straps wouldn't hold and the crossbar wouldn't help. He told me it'd be fine. It wasn't. Quite the fun 24 hours of enacting the disaster recovery plan!

I used to work on RAMACs for IBM, basically refrigerator size boxes of hard drives for a mainframe. Those things were big, heavy, and expensive, so IBM has very detailed instructions on how they were to be packed, and special crates to put them in. Well... someone just rolled one of these thing into the back of a box truck and sent it on its way. That poor machine rolled all around the back of that truck hitting the walls multiple times. To add insult to injury it wound up against the doors when the truck stopped. The doors were opened and the thing fell out of the back of the truck and crashed to the floor. (thankfully no one was in the way!). Pretty much everything was bent, the machine was scrapped and the customer got a HUGE bill.

Hey mate, first off good ya for getting stuck into it, makes me happy to see people throwing themselves in the deep, with the Dream machine to the switch connection, get a 10 Gbps SFP+ Direct Attach Cable and go from the SFP+ ports directly. While there is nothing wrong from going from switch port to switch port, this makes things cleaner, 10gb link between the router and the switch instead of splitting a single switch port bandwidth for everything that needs access for routing and internet access. Once again as a fairly long time viewer, proud of ya mate.

Nice to see the setup but I would really recommend you to go 10Gbit. It's not complicated or expensive these days. There is a really nice and affordable Unifi 10Gb switch called the Unifi Aggregation with 8 10 Gb ports. Then connect that to your Dream Machine, your 48 port switch, the NVR and your server and possibly your editing workstation and your setup will be so much nicer.

Sounds like a lot of fun just playing around with all of the server stuff. Sometimes, that's the best way to really learn this stuff. And building a new system from scratch means that you can tweak things as you go without worrying about getting something wrong the first time. Until it's all implemented, it's all like a big test bench.

A few things, on your Dream Machine SE, you're using the 2.5gbe 'wan' connection point. If your provider has faster speeds, you CAN use one of the 10gbe ports as a wan port (that's what I'm doing on a Dream Machine Pro, with the 'main' wan port switched to secondary and a LTE backup connection set up there. You'd also be much better off to use either a short fiber or coax 10g cable in the sfp+ ports on your switches and dream machine for your 'backhaul' between the switches/firewall. If you were to add one of their 'aggregation' 10g switches, you can pull a few ports off that to specific machines you want to be 10g if necessary. You DEFINITELY want that larger pipe between the switches, less network congestion, etc. The aggregation switch wouldn't strictly be necessary (as your pro switches have 4 10g ports as-is, and those CAN be use to go to a PC, even on copper with the correct gbic's installed), but I opted for that route as I needed more 10g ports (i'm using the non-pro switches, with 2 10g SFP+ and 2 1g SFP ports). The only other thing I'd definitely be rethinking is that power distrubtion switch.. As I'm sure you're very well aware, lighted switches are like magnets to kids... Expect things to get togged on and off randomly, lol..

Greg, if you're using truenas, you should have the drives exposed as individual drives, not a motherboard raid. Then create two mirrored virtual devices and add both to the same pool. Effectively raid 10, but then you can add another pair of mirrored drives to stripe across 3 (or more depending on how many pairs you want to add) virtual devices.

Your Dream Machine should have a DAC cable included in the box. At 9:12 I see you connected the switch to the Dream Machine with an ethernet cable. It's better to use the DAC cable in one of the SFP ports on the far right of the devices. That will give you a 10Gbit connection between the devices. You can even connect two and combine them to make that 20Gbit.

Yes you can split the graphics to multiple VM systems, you will have to configure the server to set up separate process and ram stepping (direct cpu access and data transfer) for each video process. Raid 5 or Raid 10 - all depends on the terms you are using, because technically Raid 10 is Raid 5, (being both mirrored and striped, with a individual drive for the ecc data which is '5' but, 1 / 0 (aka raid 10) big advantage in the general format is being allowed to hot swap drives while the ECC control format auto corrects or restores lost data) HINT :: All your network cables at each end should have a unique ID tag stuck or linked to the cable, IE - first cable is id tag FR Door Camera, second cable is FR Street Camera, sort of thing, (all cable tags should be a bit away from the end, that way you have cable to clip/replug the ends and the ID tags allow you to keep track of what IS and is not plugged in) makes it much easier to trace a line IF it gets clipped/broken and track it down or replace.

H.265 Greg! Love the video though :) @ 9:17, yes thats correct. Also, think about having 1 TB of free space per camera for 30 days of 4k footage. At least it should be pretty close to that (this is kinda what I do for a living hehe). Server build is.... a monster lol Should do you very well for the intended services you described that you wanted to use it for. I used to build servers (with Ubuntu) for NVRs at my job, and they are no match against this beast!

Switch from Rufus to Ventoy. Dragging and dropping is a whole lot easier.

also FYI, do not mount the AP Pro directly to the ceiling, need to have it dropped down a bit from the ceiling, otherwise a brown spot will be in the roof, it gets really hot otherwise

Greetings Greg! I recommend creating a main network for your devices in the rack and managing your cameras, LAN, and WIFI through individual VLANs for each type of use. This way, you can avoid congestion in your network caused by constant packet traffic from, for example, cameras. I hope everything goes well with the installation of your new equipment.

VLANs are definitely a new thing for me, but I've been suggested the same thing by others! Will look into it.
