I think the iPad mini (A17 Pro) is an unfortunate victim of cancel culture. I have watched COUNTLESS (pre)review videos while waiting for it on the 23rd and since I got it in my hands. As I have the iPad Pro and the iPhone 16PM, the mini fits right into my family of devices. So, my question is: Are there any POSITIVE videos for this iPad? I mean, coming from a fading iPad mini 5 with a trade-in value of $180, this new mini was worth every penny.

The iPad mini is a niche product so that could be why for more negative reviews, it is a smaller weaker (in terms of the chip) iPad Air, but it’s hard to compare the mini to the other iPads because the usage of it is going to be way different to people specifically in the market for it

The original iPad I remember I could set the rotation to not have it rotate. Tim needs to talk to ME! and put this back in the iPad. Also, I should be able to turn on or off the auto shaping when pausing my pencil when taking notes - my irregular line should remain so and not go to a straighten line when I don't want it to (I'm note taking a resting my pen! - I don't need an auto shape change!).

I was looking for an iPad, compared and watched different KZbin videos, compared data on the web and researched which one would suit me, and decided that I would also buy the new iPad mini 17 pro. And then I still decided that I wouldn't buy it, that I would still go from the countryside to the capital and see with my own eyes and try it. It's good that I finally went, because yes, the iPad mini is a very nice size and seemed capable, but it has a terribly dark screen, dark and somehow like a dim one, True Tone was off and it was on maximum brightness and still a terribly dark screen, such a dim screen and my eyes had to strain all the time and got strained because the screen was very bad to look at and I decided not to buy the iPad mini 17 pro, gen 7. In the meantime, I went to other stores to let my eyes look at something else and rest and in another store I also tried, looked, touched the iPad mini, the same there, still such a dull screen, dim screen and I went back to another store and tried again, still the same, too dark screen and dim screen is the iPad mini 17 pro gen 7, but of course that's for my eyes and I also wear glasses. I researched in stores and tried the iPad Air, also with a too dark screen and it didn't feel smooth or pleasant to look at or touch, the brightness is also very low on the Air, although a little brighter than on the mini, because the screen is larger on the Air, and I also tried the iPad pro M4 and bought the iPad pro 11 M4 instead and I felt the tension in my eyes disappear, my eyes immediately relaxed with this screen and it will be usable for many years.

I appreciate your level-headed take. Too many reviewers try too closely to compare this model to its predecessor, and too few prospective buyers appreciate the benefits of a device that doesn't change much from generation to generation. Keep your devices around longer and, while using them, focus on the tasks you're using them for and not on the device itself and you will be happier. I'm as miffed about the display as anyone because just about every other display I own runs at 120 Hz or greater, but I'm a realist. Give this a 120 Hz OLED and you increase the sales price by $100 or more, discouraging a vast swathe of the silent majority from buying who care more about the price than about the display. Another thing about displays -- there is no perfect display, and there never will be. Not even your eyes or brain -- the final output devices in the chain of vision -- will ever be perfect, and they will only continue to worsen as you age. I realized in the pursuit of the perfect display that... - LCDs are cheap, predictable, and responsive but washed out. IPS improves the latter aspect over TN. - VA displays feature better contrast, but might produce a headache for being less responsive and show heavy discoloration when viewed at an angle. - CRTs have blazing response times, great colors, and the unique vignette of scan lines, but their green phosphors decay slowly, producing a smeared afterimage. - OLEDs give near-instant response times and a virtually true black, but are dimmer and might suffer from the mura effect. Though a feature of our visual system and not of OLEDs, haloing will appear around bright objects on a dark background. - Mini LED displays are brighter than OLEDs, but their few dimming zones will produce an uneven set of gray-black tones and a watercolor effect in demanding scenes. For all their shortcomings, LCDs really aren't that bad, discounting 'jelly scrolling'.

The iPad Mini 7 is the best entry level product that Apple has announced in the last few years. My reason for saying this is because it has a usable 128 GB of flash memory. Most £150 entry level Android phones come with 128 Gb of flash memory but Apples entry level £429 iPhone SE 5G only comes with 64 Gb of flash memory with very expensive flash memory upgrades. I am a PC gamer and I paid £200 for a 2 Tb SSD eighteen months ago and paid £200 for a 4 Tb faster SSD recently. Moore's law is therefore still a real thing and Apple should similarly be doubling the flash memory in entry level Macs and iPhones every 18 months with no increase in cost.

However, Face ID is still only a “Pro” feature despite being on iPads for 6 years now. Apple never branded Face ID as a Pro feature unlike 120 hz ProMotion. So why is Apple still keeping Face ID only at the pros?

I personally think they are a victim of their own success right now. There probably aren’t enough OLED displays at scale to put them into all of their products with the specifications they want. It’s a complicated issue because smaller companies or companies that sell in less volume can implement newer tech because they don’t need to worry about selling millions of units

@@GregsGadgets: Apple uses Tandem OLED, which needs the M4 chip due to the display co-processor that handles the two panels. If it can't get the OLED display, then it at least deserves a 120hz LCD panel. People, stop justifying a 60Hz display in late 2024 c'mon

I think the form factor of ipad mini is the only device that is genunely a tablet and fills in the gap between a phone and laptop. The bigger i pads are tablets that tries to be a laptop and eventually loose the characteristic of a tablet. In fact Ipad pro should have a mini vesrion. Also, there are many alternatives to all ipads but there is hardly one for the mini. Realy pitty that smaller tablets are made smaller to make it cheap rather than for the convenience.

don't buy a recycled tablet from apple, which takes us for suckers

3 years for this!!! Comes on, it needed thinner bezels, higher refresh rate, better battery life, Face ID, on top of a better processor and pencil pro support. Just so disappointing.
@andyH_EnglandАй бұрын
Buy a Samsung 8-inch OLED 120Hz thin one, then! Or, you may see that 8-inch tablets are in their final decline as phones get larger and folds take up space. Samsung, does not make one, nor most rivals, because there is no money in it. Apple knows this, hence the three-year upgrade cycle. They could have easily ended this, but gave it one last throw of the dice, but could not afford big changes as it sells less than 5 million units a year (80 million plus in launch year). Be thankful it will exist for another three years, and be prepared for this to be the last version.
@TheLegendNewtonАй бұрын
@@andyH_England I’m not going to thank Apple for wasting my time with this pointless upgrade (if you can even call it that). It’s one thing when iPhones get minimal upgrades but they come out every year. This had 3 years to get a refresh and all we get is a year old phone chip and support for a new stylus. Red magic just released a smallish tablet at a similar price point, think I’ll just get that instead.
@andyH_EnglandАй бұрын
@@TheLegendNewton The iPad Mini is not for spec-chasers and never has been, so yours and others surprise is strange. Why were you expecting these "changes"?
@TheLegendNewtonАй бұрын
@@andyH_England are you really asking why we want upgrades to a 3 year old device? What I’m asking for isn’t much, a higher refresh rate display and thinner bezels with Face ID on top of what they did would actually warrant an upgrade from the mini 6. And that isn’t spec chasing at all considering the device with those upgrades is still way behind most other devices, but would tackle a lot of people’s issues with the iPad mini.
@andyH_EnglandАй бұрын
@@TheLegendNewton I have already said that Apple does not make 120Hz IPS panels or Face ID on IPS panels. So you are asking for something that cannot happen; that seems pointless, and you are just complaining for the sake of it. Just ignore it and get a Samsung 8-inch one with all those features.

Yes, I would have upgraded to the mini 7 from the mini 6 if there had been an improved screen. Since it didn’t, I won’t.
@ChazUBCSАй бұрын
Honestly, I don’t know how much of a jump you would see between the tablets anyway. I think this update was for people with older iPad minis or first time buyers like myself.

I finally found someone who doesn't deceive his public by calling this ipad mini 7
@JedEckertАй бұрын
I don't think anyone is trying to deceive you. Calling it the iPad Mini 7 is simply out of habit because up until now earlier iterations of the device were associated with a numerical identifier. Also calling the device the iPad Mini A17 Pro is somewhat cumbersome and long-winded.
@Annette_HonsАй бұрын
@@JedEckert personally I think calling it an A17 Pro makes it sound as if it’s actually a “pro” mini iPad… Which it is not. So to me, it’s just the iPad mini 7. So I’m on defense, not sure if I should upgrade from my 6
@ChazUBCSАй бұрын
@@Annette_Hons Apple calls it the iPad mini on their website, they don’t call it the mini A17 Pro.

Samsung/Android needs an 8.X "pro" tablet with 120Hz, OLED, and Fingerprint scanner on Power button or in-display. The mini size is so nice, I had the 6 and ended up selling it. I wanted an eReader size tablet to compliment my 11 in tablet I use in landscape for writing and video. These companies don't seem to get what consumers want, and for Apple their followers justify buying their BS - until that changes - they wont innovate or get competitive - consumers should NEVER be satisified and KEEP your FOOT on these companies NECKS - we should have FLEW into a rage and boycotted when they started to charge over $1,000.00 for cellphones - and over the last several years the "upgrades" have been "meh" - so the cost should have decreased - nope. Consumers need to take back their power, these companies stopped competitng and we suffer for it
