The iPad Pro is an excellent device from what I see, but I think the loud-for-pound comparison is correct as far as it goes. However iPads are adjacent but still different beasts, and with the iPad form factor, one can leave the pencil and Magic Keyboard at home and use just the iPad while out and about. If you're having a business lunch, or walking someone through a house, you wouldn't open up a MacBook to show say a layout, diagram or a digital contract for a client. The iPad is often and fairly commonly used in that capacity, and this speaks to the subtle portability difference.

Paired with pencil pro & magic keyboard, writing or typing class lectures have been smooth and most e-book sources (McMillan, Pearson, etc) works well with iPad. Nice comparison. One thing not mentioned in the iPad Pro's favor is the ability to add a built in cellular modem for cellular internet. That can be very useful while traveling. I have an M1 Max MacBook Pro 16" and M4 iPad Pro 13". Both are great, but I am more likely to travel with the iPad Pro due to size, weight and cell modem. That said, for photography software I use like Adobe Lightroom (which is available for Mac and iPad), some features are not available on the iPad Pro that are on the Mac. The ones I really miss when using the iPad Pro are AI De-noise and stitching together pictures in a panorama. When traveling, I have to wait to get home to do these which is sort of frustrating. Maybe a 14" MacBook Pro or Upcoming 13" M4 MacBook Air is the answer . . . . .

I disagree, they should just release a version of a MacBook with a touchscreen and maybe a foldable keyboard. I think there is a major audience for iPadOS and how simple it works. Get a MacBook Pro. I have both but I have to say you can do all the thing via MacBook Pro, but iPad is very restricted with iPadOS. Theoretically yes, iPad can do as well. But in real life, not. For example a middle range video edit can easily heat up iPads and resulted to shut off instantaneously with high charge consuming while MacBook Pro handles very well. For simple tasks like RAW photo editing, yes iPad is very speedy and delightful solution. But Mac Pro for professional touches. iPad still makes you feel like bigger and little bit developed IOS.

For me the iPad Pro is essential for playing music, has specific purposes for using pencil for scanning and is better travelling with SIM making local WiFi which are often poor and provide security concerns is not necessary. My MacBook Pro is essential to me for photo editing software. Then there is huge overlap using for desktop business and leisure. I think the MacBook is the better for business, while the iPad is better for leisure

Here's my question, it feels niche but I think it probably applies to a fair number of people: would you rather have a MacBook Air + 11" iPad Pro or just have a MacBook Pro in whatever configuration makes the most sense to you. For me, I use my M2 Air and my M4 iPad Pro for different things, but having two separate devices is slightly annoying, and I can't tell if giving the iPad up would be worth it to consolidate everything into an M4 MacBook Pro.

If faced with the choice of either an Apple M4 MacBook Pro or M4 iPad Pro I would choose neither and instead select a Microsoft Surface Pro 11, because that single Microsoft device with desktop grade operating system, touch display and stylus support can do everything I require, whereas in the Apple ecosystem I need both MacBook and iPad to complete those same tasks at twice the cost. I have a M4 iPad Pro 1TB and it's an outstanding media consumption device and you can have some fun playing games on it, but the limitations of iPad OS that restrict the types of application you can run, along with the cumbersome multi-tasking interface with poor workflows make it difficult to get real work done. I also use a lot of web apps, but iPad OS doesn't have a true desktop class web browser. Hence, an iPad will never be a computer. For me, a modern mobile computer must have a touch screen and intrinsic stylus support, as a keyboard and touch though useful doesn't provide a full and complete multi-UI experience. That immediately eliminates any MacBook, and hence, I will never buy another MacBook for that reason. I have just bought a base model M4 Mac Mini as my Mac device and added an external 1TB USB4 SSD which was cheaper than Apple's 256GB to 512GB upgrade option and has faster read / write performance than the Mini's internal SSD. M4 Mac Mini performance Vs cost is exceptional. But if travelling with a single computer, it always my Windows 11 tablet. OK, the Apple silicon devices slightly outclass it with regards performance, but the Windows tablet wins easily with regards capability which includes running VMs and a full programing IDE in addition to drawing and note taking with a stylus.

I have ALWAYS felt that the iPad tablet was a "secondary" computer in any Apple ecosystem. That being said, the iPad usefulness really shines in a dual MacBook Pro/iPad Pro ecosystem. (Yes, I understand the costs involved ) but considering just how long Apple products retain their usefulness and how fiscally wasteful upgrading a laptop yearly - like a significant population of computer users do, it makes far more sense to purchase a MacBook Pro first and then, a year (or two later) purchase an iPad Pro. Indeed, I am still rocking an iPad Pro v3 12.9" 2018 model next to my M3 Pro MacBook Pro laptop. The arguments supporting the concept of two devices optimized for their usefulness working together still outweighs the "toaster/refrigerator" jack of all trades single device initial cost advantage over the long run.

You cannot use the pencil on a MacBoo Pro, there is no touch screen on a MacBook Pro, there is no OLED display on a MacBook Pro. Conclusion... DO NOT BUY THE NEW IPAD PRO. The battery only lasts one day. It is heavier. I wish I'd kept my last one. If you have an Intel MBP then you will benefit from the M chips. Apple is actively reaching down and turning off the Intel functionality. I expect to see a class action lawsuit over this soon. There is no reason why my iTunes should stop allowing me to buy music just because I'm on a five year old Intel MBP. Other things are no longer working as well. Tim Cook has done this his entire tenure, artificially making people upgrade hardware... from shortening iPhone battery life to make you think your iPhone is dying to turning off features without even updating software that he is doing now with Intel MPBs. If I don't update my macOS there is no reason why my iTunes should just stop allowing me to sign in. I hope someone files a lawsuit soon.

Nope, never asked this question before, seems like a very stupid question. Do you need a laptop? Buy a MacBook. Do you need a tablet? Buy an iPad.
@danielxmiller13 күн бұрын
I don't get why you think this is a "stupid" question. Not everyone needs "just" a laptop or "just" a tablet. Sometimes people need both or maybe they want to know if the tablet is capable of doing things the laptop can do, so they are doing their research. A lot of times it's a stretch to even buy one thing, let alone two; so they are forced to decide on one or the other. Do I buy the laptop and just not have a tablet, or maybe I buy the laptop and get a super cheap tablet for the things the laptop can't do but a cheaper tablet can do (or not). Or maybe I want to draw, but I also edit videos so I'm researching if the iPad Pro can edit videos like that laptop can. There are so many scenarios that just because you can't think of a situation a person is in, doesn't mean they aren't in one. That doesn't make their curiosity stupid by any means. Perhaps in an ideal world where everyone can afford everything, then this question wouldn't be relevant, but we don't live in that world.

I've not been following Apple at all for a long time now since they trashed the MacBook Pro years ago. What an odd comparison, in the fact how is it even a comparison, how can a phone-like OS compete with an actual computer. It's a non-comparison, they serve two different needs. Are people really that tech-illiterate they're confused about the difference between an actual capable computer and a much more limited tablet that you can hardly control. Clearly Apple seems interested in limiting it's users and locking them in to their tightly controlled experience aka the iPad and iPhone with the limited App Store. I feel bad for people given an iPad who would be better served by an actual computer.
